    Learning so I can play with my dad for the first time in my 30 something years! I've always been jealous and wished I could play cribb with him, now since everything happened last few years I haven't seen him in 4 years and when I visit him this spring he'll be shocked that I learned and he'll cry tears of joy. My dad taught me how to play cribbage. I'd ask if he wanted to play, he'd say, yeah, but you don't stand a chance! Usually I didn't!

      you should introduce your dad to some of the amazing modern board games that exist now. Board games have a LOOONG way since the days of cribbage and monopoly. A point for getting 31 is only during the game play part of the game, when you are laying down cards. (Also called pegging). When you add up your card points afterwards, 31 is no longer relevant to get any points.

    I'm only 3 minutes into your video, and I'm already a little lost. How did you lose the deal when you selected the 10 and the dealer selected an 8? Does the low card win? Thanks. Also, when you select the starter card, do you just flip over the top card of the deck, or do you look for a particular card you want as the starter card and select it?

    • @PuzzlingGames
      @PuzzlingGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. Low card wins in determining who is dealer first. And the starter card is just the top card of the pile

      @@PuzzlingGames This is incorrect. Each player cuts a portion of the deck and reveals the bottom card of the pile they took. Only then does lowest card determine who deals first. In the interest of fairness, the player who does the pre-cut shuffle offers the first cut to their opponent so that the shuffler doesn't have the advantage of knowing what the top card might be. It is usually customary for the first player making the cut to take at most half the deck to reveal their bottom card, thus offering their opponent a reasonable chance of getting a lower cut card. The starter card is determined by the non-dealer cutting the cards, the dealer takes the top card from the remaining cards, and possibly scoring 2 points for revealing a Jack. I'm going to post a comment later with a fairly lengthy discussion intended for constructive criticism only so watch for it.

    I’m still confused about how the “Go” scoring works. You didn’t get a point when the dealer said “Go” and you made it 31, but the dealer got a point when you said “Go” on the same hand. Why is that? Also, who continues play after a “Go” if neither player can make the count 31 or over?

    • @Big-Misha-N
      @Big-Misha-N 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if I got your question right,
      Go scoring works if the player 1 says go and player 2 can't play a card that equals 31 or less. That's 1 point for the go. Same situation player 1 says go but player 2 can lay down a card they do if it doesn't equal 31 you player 2 plays until can't anymore and takes 1 point for go, if player 2 can make 31 it cancels the go 1 point and makes 31 for 2 points. I hope that helps.

    • @dvongrad

    Ok. What did I miss?
    I see two issues.
    #1 You wrote, “Your opponent cannot lay down a card without going over 31 (1 point)“. The dealer DIDN’T lay down a card when you played the 4 for a score of 31 (thus pegging 2). Why didn’t you get the 3rd point for him not being able to lay down a card?
    #2 After the first 31, the dealer played the last card which brought the score up to 32, exceeding 31. I thought that you could not play a card that brought the score over 31. What did I miss?

    As I promised in another post on this video, having a passion for cribbage and playing for over 35 years, after viewing this and your subsequent videos, I must say that I’m a little disappointed in its content. I have some comments about them, which I hope will be taken as constructive criticism if you want to record them again or as more help to those who are still confused about certain aspects of the game. Using timestamps, I would like to address the following:
    3:00 - You don’t say how you lost the deal, although this is mentioned in the comments, which many may not read.
    4:41 - You don’t say how the starter card is selected, again mentioned in the comments. However, it is not simply the top card of the remaining pile after the deal; rather, the non-dealer cuts that pile, and the top card of the pile still on the table is revealed as the starter card.
    5:35 - In your text, having a Jack in your hand is not used during play, other than being used to score 15, pairing it with your opponent’s Jack, as part of a run, or bringing the playing score to 31. I would also consider rearranging the list to put getting to 15 before getting to 31, as that will happen first, if at all. You are correct in how the Jack is used after game play at 13:20.
    5:57 - Laying down the final card to get 15 is 3 points, two for 15 and 1 for last card.
    9:33 - I’m not sure what you mean by “get 4 cards out of it” as the explanation clearly shows the there are only 2 points in that hand.
    11:34 - You say “121 pegs”; I assume you mean 121 points.
    12:50 - You could not have gotten points for playing 3 of a kind with a third 8. The playing score is already at 31 when the pair is played, as indicated by the count. You should say that 3 of a kind is worth 6 points only if the count is still under or reaches 31.
    13:15 - You say you got 15 for 2 points and 1 for last card but the text clearly states there is also an unordered run of 3, bringing the total for playing the 5 to 6 points.
    Here are a couple of questions for you or anyone else who would like to answer:
    1. What would you discard given the 6 cards of 5-5-6-7-7-8 if you were the dealer? As the non-dealer?
    2. Is it possible to win a game 121-0?

      David: There seems to be an overwhelming amount of misinformation regarding cribbage tutorials in general and understanding a "go" in particular. Fortunately there are cribbage games for download on GP which offer a great way to understand the game as the computer counts the points and moves the pegs. I have only seen 1 video which explains a "go" correctly.

      @@PuzzlingGames start at 6:26 point, the dealer gives a "go" but no mention to the viewing audience that at that point you would get a point and even when points are awarded for the 31, it's only calculated as a "2" pointer. The program may well have moved the peg (I can't see the board, it's too small) but there's no mention of getting the point for a "go" nor is it pointed out that the peg is moved. Only that 2 points is awarded for reaching 31. OR... maybe I'm deaf and can't hear it lol.

      its really a bad game. so many great, easy to learn modern games that fix many of the problems with old games like cribbage. Board games have come a long way since the days of monopoly and scrabble and cribbage, just like computers have come a long way since the 70s

    Why did you not get a point for the FIRST "GO" that the dealer said?
    This is still NOT a clear set of rules.... ??

    • @dtecum
      @dtecum 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "go" is probably the most confusing part of cribbage and rightfully so. It's not a concept that is easily understood. I will attempt to explain in general terms. With 2 person cribbage both players need to say "go" in consecutive order. Whoever says "go" last scores a point, then the count starts over again from zero. With 3 players all 3 players must say "go" in consecutive order. The player announcing the 3rd consecutive "go" scores a point and play starts over again from zero. 4 players need 4 consecutive "goes" in order for the last player who said "go" to score a point and play starts over again from zero. I know this is very wordy explanation. I always teach new players to always say "go". So grab a deck of cards and practice "go".

    • @dvongrad
      @dvongrad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never heard where ALL players must say “Go” before any points are taken unless it is mandatory in tournament play and the last one I played in was in high school where it was not a strict and enforced rule. Usually, it’s just assumed that if a player says “Go” any other players can lay down their cards (in strategic pegging order) once the “Go” cycle is complete. For example, if Player 1 says “Go” in a 2-player game, Player 2 doesn’t have to say “Go” in response but rather he can continue to play all the cards he can because Player 1 still can’t make a play. The same goes for 3- or 4-player games when it is known that all remaining players IN SUCCESSION can’t make plays.
      If you or anyone else are up to the challenge, answer me this. If I’m playing against you and you say “Go”, there are 4 different ways for me to score 10 points while the tally is under 31. How is this possible? As a bonus, what is the maximum pegging points you can get during play before the hands and crib are scored in a 2-player game? How many points will your opponent get?

  • @stevenhooker2600
    @stevenhooker2600 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Runs are based on the actual cards and not their numerical value. At no point during this video was a real 10 played, so if you're referring to the 9-Q-8 play, that was not a run just because the Q has a value of 10.

I recently started learning online. What a hot mess this game is. Ridiculous. The scoring is insane. I watched you send cards to the crib that were needed to make 15 in your four cards! This game sucks explained with a lot of word salad.
