So here it is, aside from any pre-recorded content this could well be the last video outside of the house for a while! The format shift will have to come and some out of the box thinking will have to be applied in the name of safety. I hope you enjoy this one! I managed to squeeze this in last week and what a car to share with you. When all of this over I’m hoping to take the Porsche 997 GT3 RS to a high speed circuit to discover that front end grip under heavy braking!

I have to say Mr JWW, you are one of the only TH-cam petrol heads who can actually drive really well and understand the nuisances of individual cars.... as a good motoring journalist would! And despite all the wonderful cars you are able to own, drive and to produce quality content with, you do it with some class and without being ... annoying? Or somewhat arrogant....like so many unfortunately are....
Thank you for the great content, the insightful drives and genuine enthusiasm you convey in all you videos. Well done and keep up the good work for us genuine enthusiasts and your success and growth speaks for itself. stay safe. 😎

JWW does it again! Having driven both of these beasts flat out, I couldn't agree more with you! I do wish you would have talked more about the shifter feel. The 997 RS is more "notchy", but its a rifle bolt feeling. So satisfying and engaging; it's a big part of why the car feels so racecar. (Like reloading a .50 cal sniper).

Damn, that “thickness” analogy to torque really stuck with me! I have a degree in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering and that’s probably the best description I’ve heard 😄. When I got my first really serious sports car, a C63S (4.0 TT), I really felt that thick malleable torque beneath my right foot compared to my previous “fast” cars...your sir have a way with words 👍🏼

Thank you so much for the much needed entertainment during such difficult time. Keep doing it, and frankly these type of videos what differentiates you form all the others, and makes you so good at what you do. It is always music to my ears to hear that you are using your 991.2 manual GT3 as a daily. Mine has 15K miles and it is one of my daily cars. All of my friends kept trying to push me to get the PDK, and I am so glad I did not listen to them. As you indicated the clutch pedal and gear changes are so effortless and combined with the low end torque, I often find myself in the middle of rush hours and I am not bother a bit with having a manual. For past few years, I used to tell everyone if I have to give up all of my cars and I do have a large Porsche and exotic car collection and only keep one car, it would be the Porsche 981 Spyder, which I loved dearly and won me few track events and few Autocrosses, but today I can happily say this has recently changed and my GT3 with manual transmission would be the car I would keep if I have to get rid of my car collection... I want you to know, I do fully understand every time I see that big smile of yours while you driving that manual GT3. It is honest and genuine smile. It is that great of a car and an experience. Keep up the good work and look forward to much more content from you, during such difficult times. God bless you, and Stay & your family safe and wish the same for all your audience. Mark

Nice video just a few observations : The 991.1 GT3 (PDK only) redline is 9K pm, the 991.1 GT3 RS was 8.5K rpm. Also on the engine side the Mezger is a port injection engine whereas the 991 is (all gens) direct injection. The 991.2 GT3 did away with hydraulic valve lifters for rigid lifters that might require calibration (shims) although porsche says is not required over the engine life time.

just to put things right: 991.1 GT3 actually did rev to 9k rpm. Just look at chris harris video. However, the 911.1 GT3 RS with the 4.0-litre engine did not. That had the limiter set to 8800 rpm or thereabouts. It was only with your 991.2 4.0-litre engine that they managed to have reliable 9k rpm. :) Cheers

That's a great description of the clutch pedal in the 997 3RS, 'magnetically bonded'. Driving the thing in traffic is a leg workout. Everything else you've said about the older car is spot on; a momentary pause at neutral while going 3-4 or 4-3. I want to type everything else I remember about the car out but you've captured it in your video so succinctly; fantastic. It'd look nice next to the 991.2 and TDF! :)

I had a 996GT3 for many years which had a heavy clutch but the actual gear change was quite slick, the lever moving around the box quite sweetly. Had a friend with a 996GT3 like mine who upgraded to a 997.2 GT3RS which he let me have a brief drive of. Was quite apparent how much more effort was required to change gear and though I loved the car in most respects, I wasn't a fan of the gear change. It sounds like the 991 manual GT3 is a very different driving experience.

No Name true but I am not looking at it from a financial aspect I am just trying to figure out which one would make me the happiest. My gut keeps telling me the gt4 is the car for me but something just keeps drawing me into the 911 so before I make my decision I am trying to get as much experienced input as I can.

2 weeks ago I drove the gt4 and the 991.2 gt3 back to back and there was no question about it. I bought the gt3. Even though so many reviews say differently, the gt3 was worlds apart and really feels just perfect and gt4 I felt lacks that personality and feel that the Carrera offers. And when we compare to the 997 which I drove a day earlier, it was really the better of the drivers car and more engaging for sure, but the 991.2 is definitely a much better daily driver car - easier to live with on those normal days going to work.

I have the 991.2 gt3 manual and owned the earlier gt4 before. The gt3 engine is very special and the car feels a step up.i found the gt4 engine had been held back to make it less powerful than a 911.Great potential but would cost money to release the power.l prefer the rear engine feel but the mid is very well balanced. Both great cars.

Salim Adamjee well said sir. :) but for me the main difference is still money. If you dont care about this aspect take the gt3. If you care about you become 8/10 from the gt4 also.

Great video. You nail the difference between the cars. You should drive 997rs4.0. The pick up from lower rpm is a bit more similar to your 991.2gt3.
Question. With your intended use, 20000miles, ceramic, no club sport, why not get the more comfortable seats? Seems to be a better choice when you don’t track the car a lot?

great comparo! glad you went into all the petrolhead-gland-tickling sensations and i agree with your conclusion. was hoping you could comment on the steering and suspension though.
    just a few little details:
    1. 9k rpm was already in the 991.1 gt3.
    2. the heavier clutch and shifter is an attribute of the 997, not the RS, since the regular gt3 is just as heavy
    3. imo the 991.2's engine isn't any more thoroughbred than the 997's since the mezger was a pure motorsport engine derived from a gt1 le mans car
would love to see more content on the 997 gt3 RS!

So, James, this video prompted me to go back and rewatch some of your previous Modern Classics videos. Which did you prefer? The Ferrari 599 GTO or the Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series?

You should keep the 991 GT3 as a long termer and review it against the next 992.1 GT3 and 992.2 GT3. I've got a 992 GT3 Touring and it is a superb car. Excellent manual gearbox!

Stay safe Mr JWW... Best wishes to you and your family... Realistically living in Australia and having to drive under our laws and roads I'd take which ever handles better. I do like a heavier clutch but I guess you get used to the lighter clutch...Hard choice but gt3 manual ftw... Mainly because it's easier to live with...

the 991.1 GT3 RS only reved to 8500 rpm because of the 4.0l engine. The new 3.8l engine in the 991.1 gt3 could already rev to 9000 rpm but whatever

I Love Porsche...(GT3) 9000rpm my favorite. Plus all 911 turbo s..GT4..Macan GTS...+RS models but I want a perfect fit for me...I want to test drive every one and find the perfect balance for owning a Porsche whether it be suv...coupe or GT...almost forgot haha
