As a person with ASD, I can confirm that we are still all individuals who are drawn to different things. I haven't seen the movie, as I've repeatedly stated, I'm referring to people's reaction to the song/music videos only, and I'm saying YOU DON'T F**KING SPEAK FOR ME!!!!!! People don't make a big deal about folk with ASD getting obsessed with video games. I find gaming stressful and overwhelming but I am fascinated with Sia's video clips (among others). For the record, I did love watching Teletubies with my son too. I owned a Teletubbies t-shirt. Are you going to f**king tell me I'm doing autism wrong now, because after 4 decades I'm getting pretty fu**ing sick of being told I'm doing life wrong.
I'm autistic and wanted to see what the music videos from this movie are like and I couldn't even get through this. the combination of clashing bright colours and the sporadic nature of the dancing made me so panicked after about 20 seconds, I feel so sorry for anyone else who has more severe sensitivity watching this

I'm autisic and have pretty high sensitivity.. this is such an accurate representation of my mind on the daily. I think in bright colours, rhythms, and big dance moves. I constantly picture musical numbers to things that happen all around me every day. My mind is a constant song and dance. its what brings me joy and peace when I am distressed or over stimulated. When I listen to songs I like, I make those same over exaggerated expressions. I have tried to hide it my whole life, but its a part of who I am and it feels so incredible to see myself so represented here.
I have a son with mild autism. And ADHD he's 17 nothing like how Maddie's character portrays he talks and can think for himself he also can do alot of things when he puts his mind to it and when he's focused and in a good mood Maddie is acting in this movie
I think one of the most problematic things about this movie is that it’s very first scene (the orange scene) is not only stereotyping in a way that ablist people bully those on the spectrum but contains triggering flashing lights/colors that can trigger episodes to those on the spectrum. The movie literally gate keeps the very people it’s supposedly aiming to “represent”.
I think that in the first scene maddie is dancing as she has always done in Sia's music videos (Big girls cry for example). And there are people on the spectrum who actually like bright colours etc... you all act like there's only one type of autism.

I think the only thing that can be considered "good" of this movie is the music and just to listen bc the scenarios are really uncomfortable to watch. But in general I hated it. Im sad they puted Leslie and Kate (two of my favorite actors) to be part of it... The movie was terrible.

I am on the spectrum and I watch this video clip about 10 times a day since it was released, along with "together". People on the spectrum are overstimulated by different things. Think about all the people on the spectrum that come to life when they're playing video games. I find video games over-stimulating and stressful. Man, I find supermarkets over-stimulating and stressful, but songs, especially with music videos like the one above, bring me to life.
Same here honestly. My little brother is on the spectrum but he really liked the song and the music video, but he can't really play video games and such because it stresses him out as well. A lot of the people in the comment section are acting like people with autism get overstimulated by the same things, when they clearly don't.

Imagine putting this in a movie meant to be a “love letter” to autistic people. As an autistic person I couldn’t watch this. I got over stimulated so quickly I began to panic. The music is fine but the video is horrific. Yes, neurotypical people may love this, but for those on the spectrum... this is a literal nightmare. I’m not sure how three years of research led you to this. Fully disappointed. Edit: I’m not saying that everyone on the spectrum is like me and cannot handle the movie, but there are more than enough who cannot. I’m sorry if it seemed this way in my original post. Also look at the many comments on the Together music video of others opinions who are on the spectrum.
Have you ever watched any of Sia's other music videos? They sort of all have the same feel; its the same style but through a different lens; and I really adore how Musics imagination isn't focused on sexualizing anything. Its just fluffy, colorful and full of joy. Maddie has been the dancer for many years now; but in this shes playing music the high functioning autistic young lady and the story that followed after her primary caretaker passes away. Its nice to see so much discussion going on though; its about time we talk about these things.
Even though I’m autistic, I’m not offended by the movie in any way. I think it was a sweet movie and I just love musicals so I found the dance numbers pretty good. This is my favorite part because pink is such a flamboyant and beautiful color IMO.

But in this context comes across as super offensive and kinda like you’re assuming autistic people are all children who love bright shiny colours and overstimulation. Its so frustrating tbh because I actually really like the songs from Music and enjoy the aesthetic of the musical sequences, but 100% agree with the criticism! The worst thing is that it could have been a relatively easy fix: Remove the restraint, scenes, cast an actor who has lived experience of ASD in the role of Music but keep Maddie to perform the dance sequences if necessary (so as not to cause potential sensory overload), can easily interpret the change in actress as Music imagining an idealised version of herself perhaps - or better still, make the music videos as a separate but related project with the same narrative, that way anybody who will find the bright colours hard to watch can choose to skip them. I'm not autistic myself so I may be way off here but I think this addresses the main issues that made the movie problematic.

I guess it’s a good song but that is no excuse for no research on autism. “If you listen you will be heard…” Doesn’t Maddie Ziegler’s Character have non-verbal autism? Line could’ve been changed. This is crazy how you think people with autism’s brain works? I expected better from someone who has made amazing things in the past. Sia you crossed the line and there is no crossing back. Maddie played a caricature of an autistic girl, the main focus wasn't even on her. and it promoted a dangerous act to try and restrain autistic people having an episode. the line "i'm crushing her with my love" made me sick to my stomach as I have once had that happen to me. and it's not loving. it's traumatic. and painful. it also paints this sort of "happy" brush over what being autistic is like. no struggles of socializing much, everyone in the neighborhood knows and likes her. but that's not life. I was bullied until I dropped out of school, my father didn't know how to handle my high anxiety and has actively abused me mentally and physically, my mother was called a bad parent for doing things she knew helped me, like letting me eat indoors away from people. in school I had to eat lunch in the hallway with noise cancelling headphones so I didn't get to socialize much and had to go to Occupational therapy. and that's someone who's not even a nonverbal autistic. imagine what REAL people like Music go through on a daily basis. but we watch movie and are hit with flashing lights (no warnings btw) , loud deep bass, high pitched singing, and even DEATH?! I just had a really hard time with the film. and can't even remember much of it because I had to mentally block a lot of it.
The way that these videos are actually pretty good. Like I find them rythmic and hypnotising and I (an autistic person) really like that. I completely understand other autistic people who find them overstimulating of course, everyone has a different experience. But honesty if Sia had just released an album, not instructed poor Maddie to do a Simple Jack impression, presented the whole thing as a visual representation of her own neurodivergence (kind of in the vein of David Byrne's True Stories) and, you know, not made a whole shitty, dangerous film. This could've been really nice...

The scene involves a neighbour after the passing of her primary caretaker; while shes in the care of her irresponsible yet overwelmed sister. No one said "this is how you handle a highly function autistic individual during a meltdown." In the scene thats how it went down; and the individual said thats how his neighbour would react; is it bad that we're having this conversation when before it was never really discussed? In the real world ppl have had to deal with people choosing to dissown their highly functioning autistic kids because they didint know how to handle it... The real world isint perfect; but its a collective evolution thanks being part of the discussion.
I Have Autism and I have to say...There is nothing wrong with this movie. I Love it!. And its ok that someone that isn't autistic acts autistic...Its just a movie. Plus its kind of like how In Bohemian Rhapsody the movie...The person that plays Freddie mercury is not Freddie...So its fine thats how Music is like. If Bohemian Rhapsody is your analogy of choice, then imagine Freddie Mercury portrayed as the gay stereotype, just prancing around. How do you imagine that would go over. If you think that it's a bad analogy, then I agree. Freddie Mercury is a singular person. Music, the character, is the autistic stereotype for the personal growth of the main character. She's not an actual person with wants and dreams. She's a fussy puppy who needs someone to take care of her, and to "crush her with love". You can like this movie however much you'd like, but this movie is a just Sia's vanity project.

I surely hope that Sia knows she done a fantastic beautiful job on this movie . Honestly the negative reviews that maybe they are just part of the Hater's of this world. There are many types of Autism. But one thing with autism people is that they have very sensitive hearing. I think one review said something about the idea of the movie has been done like Rain man. Yes Rainman was a great movie. But Music was so more heart felt and moved me so much I couldn't help but cry. If Sia or anyone who works with her please let her know she has fans that despite all the negative reviews that she has fans that think she hit it out of the park! For being on the spectrum. I love the music but there is too much in the background. And having a sick sense of life. The red on the clothes and background as well pink clothes. Make me think of the menstrual cycle or bleeding. Does anyone else feel the same way? I mean I get what they were trying to do with the "imaginary" scenarios. But from experience it is with things that are the person's interests and it will be a little odd or trippy. Its a music video from sia’s new movie “music” which is about a newly sober woman named zu who has to take care of her autistic family member. A lot of people are offended by this movie because it has harmful stereotypes of autistic people. In addition, sia did not cast an autistic person for an autistic role. In auditions the autistic person got overwhelmed by the set and instead of accommodating her, she got a neurotypical person to play the role (maddie ziegler). But don’t blame maddie because she was forced into this. Anyway people find this whole movie and music videos ironic because it was “made for autistic people” when in fact many autistic people can’t watch the movie or music videos without getting overwhelmed. You can also look on twitter for her responses to criticism about the movie.

Sia even said that she wrote the character Music with maddie in mind so it was really her saying that she was going to end up with maddie no matter what. This movie shouldn't have been made this way. There are pleanty of ways that she could've done this but decided to go the totally opposite route. There are thousands of autistic actors who are just as good as maddie at dancing, singing, and even acting and also ACTUALLY AUTISTIC. I myself am neurotypical, but I have also been around, had family, and am married to someone who is autistic, and she's mute just like the character is supposed to be in this except she doesnt get to stop being this way like maddie can. If the environment is too harsh for the actor, dont get rid of the actor, change the environment. They cant change who they are, but the environment your forcing them into can.
Why are people offended by the dancing scenes? They remind me of those 1950s-60s musical movies where they had these long ass dancing scenes- like the original willy wonka movie from the 70s is much more disturbing and you don’t see people trying to get it cancelled (yet)

I almost cried when i first saw this song because just look at it, everyone smiling, everyone energetic. this is beautiful. art. everyone enjoining art together.
For you it can be art, or whatever you want to call it. But just because Sia made this film to represent autistic people and they do not feel represented, much to the contrary, if they felt uncomfortable, it is already a total failure. The idea may have been a good one, but the execution was terrible, the colors, expressions, the way that people represented on the spectrum. It's awful.

I haven't seen the movie, as I've repeatedly stated, I'm referring to people's reaction to the song/music videos only, and I'm saying YOU DON'T F**KING SPEAK FOR ME!!!!!! People don't make a big deal about folk with ASD getting obsessed with video games. I find gaming stressful and overwhelming but I am fascinated with Sia's video clips (among others). For the record, I did love watching Teletubies with my son too. I owned a Teletubbies t-shirt. Are you going to f**king tell me I'm doing autism wrong now, because after 4 decades I'm getting pretty fu**ing sick of being told I'm doing life wrong.
I'm autistic and wanted to see what the music videos from this movie are like and I couldn't even get through this. the combination of clashing bright colours and the sporadic nature of the dancing made me so panicked after about 20 seconds, I feel so sorry for anyone else who has more severe sensitivity watching this

I'm autisic and have pretty high sensitivity.. this is such an accurate representation of my mind on the daily. I think in bright colours, rhythms, and big dance moves. I constantly picture musical numbers to things that happen all around me every day. My mind is a constant song and dance. its what brings me joy and peace when I am distressed or over stimulated. When I listen to songs I like, I make those same over exaggerated expressions. I have tried to hide it my whole life, but its a part of who I am and it feels so incredible to see myself so represented here.

I have a son with mild autism. And ADHD he's 17 nothing like how Maddie's character portrays he talks and can think for himself he also can do alot of things when he puts his mind to it and when he's focused and in a good mood Maddie is acting in this movie
I think one of the most problematic things about this movie is that it’s very first scene (the orange scene) is not only stereotyping in a way that ablist people bully those on the spectrum but contains triggering flashing lights/colors that can trigger episodes to those on the spectrum. The movie literally gate keeps the very people it’s supposedly aiming to “represent”.
I think that in the first scene maddie is dancing as she has always done in Sia's music videos (Big girls cry for example). And there are people on the spectrum who actually like bright colours etc... you all act like there's only one type of autism.

I am on the spectrum and I watch this video clip about 10 times a day since it was released, along with "together". People on the spectrum are overstimulated by different things. Think about all the people on the spectrum that come to life when they're playing video games. I find video games over-stimulating and stressful. Man, I find supermarkets over-stimulating and stressful, but songs, especially with music videos like the one above, bring me to life.
Same here honestly. My little brother is on the spectrum but he really liked the song and the music video, but he can't really play video games and such because it stresses him out as well. A lot of the people in the comment section are acting like people with autism get overstimulated by the same things, when they clearly don't.

Imagine putting this in a movie meant to be a “love letter” to autistic people. As an autistic person I couldn’t watch this. I got over stimulated so quickly I began to panic. The music is fine but the video is horrific. Yes, neurotypical people may love this, but for those on the spectrum... this is a literal nightmare. I’m not sure how three years of research led you to this. Fully disappointed.

They sort of all have the same feel; its the same style but through a different lens; and I really adore how Musics imagination isn't focused on sexualizing anything. Its just fluffy, colorful and full of joy.
Maddie has been the dancer for many years now; but in this shes playing music the high functioning autistic young lady and the story that followed after her primary caretaker passes away.
Its nice to see so much discussion going on though; its about time we talk about these things.
Even though I’m autistic, I’m not offended by the movie in any way. I think it was a sweet movie and I just love musicals so I found the dance numbers pretty good. This is my favorite part because pink is such a flamboyant and beautiful color IMO.

Its so frustrating tbh because I actually really like the songs from Music and enjoy the aesthetic of the musical sequences, but 100% agree with the criticism! The worst thing is that it could have been a relatively easy fix: Remove the restraint, scenes, cast an actor who has lived experience of ASD in the role of Music but keep Maddie to perform the dance sequences if necessary (so as not to cause potential sensory overload), can easily interpret the change in actress as Music imagining an idealised version of herself perhaps - or better still, make the music videos as a separate but related project with the same narrative, that way anybody who will find the bright colours hard to watch can choose to skip them. I'm not autistic myself so I may be way off here but I think this addresses the main issues that made the movie problematic.

i watched the whole thing, and as someone with autism, i had to pause in the middle of it so i wouldn't get too overwhelmed.

Maddie played a caricature of an autistic girl, the main focus wasn't even on her. and it promoted a dangerous act to try and restrain autistic people having an episode. the line "i'm crushing her with my love" made me sick to my stomach as I have once had that happen to me. and it's not loving. it's traumatic. and painful.
it also paints this sort of "happy" brush over what being autistic is like. no struggles of socializing much, everyone in the neighborhood knows and likes her. but that's not life. I was bullied until I dropped out of school, my father didn't know how to handle my high anxiety and has actively abused me mentally and physically, my mother was called a bad parent for doing things she knew helped me, like letting me eat indoors away from people. in school I had to eat lunch in the hallway with noise cancelling headphones so I didn't get to socialize much and had to go to Occupational therapy.
and that's someone who's not even a nonverbal autistic. imagine what REAL people like Music go through on a daily basis.

I just had a really hard time with the film. and can't even remember much of it because I had to mentally block a lot of it.
The way that these videos are actually pretty good. Like I find them rythmic and hypnotising and I (an autistic person) really like that. I completely understand other autistic people who find them overstimulating of course, everyone has a different experience. But honesty if Sia had just released an album, not instructed poor Maddie to do a Simple Jack impression, presented the whole thing as a visual representation of her own neurodivergence (kind of in the vein of David Byrne's True Stories) and, you know, not made a whole shitty, dangerous film.

There are many types of Autism. But one thing with autism people is that they have very sensitive hearing. I think one review said something about the idea of the movie has been done like Rain man. For being on the spectrum. I love the music but there is too much in the background. And having a sick sense of life. The red on the clothes and background as well pink clothes. Make me think of the menstrual cycle or bleeding. Does anyone else feel the same way? I mean I get what they were trying to do with the "imaginary" scenarios. But from experience it is with things that are the person's interests and it will be a little odd or trippy. Its a music video from sia’s new movie “music” which is about a newly sober woman named zu who has to take care of her autistic family member. A lot of people are offended by this movie because it has harmful stereotypes of autistic people. In addition, sia did not cast an autistic person for an autistic role. In auditions the autistic person got overwhelmed by the set and instead of accommodating her, she got a neurotypical person to play the role (maddie ziegler). But don’t blame maddie because she was forced into this. Anyway people find this whole movie and music videos ironic because it was “made for autistic people” when in fact many autistic people can’t watch the movie or music videos without getting overwhelmed. You can also look on twitter for her responses to criticism about the movie.

Sia even said that she wrote the character Music with maddie in mind so it was really her saying that she was going to end up with maddie no matter what. This movie shouldn't have been made this way. There are thousands of autistic actors who are just as good as maddie at dancing, singing, and even acting and also ACTUALLY AUTISTIC. I myself am neurotypical, but I have also been around, had family, and am married to someone who is autistic, and she's mute just like the character is supposed to be in this except she doesnt get to stop being this way like maddie can. If the environment is too harsh for the actor, dont get rid of the actor, change the environment. They cant change who they are, but the environment your forcing them into can.

Why are people offended by the dancing scenes? They remind me of those 1950s-60s musical movies where they had these long ass dancing scenes- like the original willy wonka movie from the 70s is much more disturbing and you don’t see people trying to get it cancelled (yet)

I almost cried when i first saw this song because just look at it, everyone smiling, everyone energetic. this is beautiful. art. everyone enjoining art together.
For you it can be art, or whatever you want to call it. But just because Sia made this film to represent autistic people and they do not feel represented, much to the contrary, if they felt uncomfortable, it is already a total failure. The idea may have been a good one, but the execution was terrible, the colors, expressions, the way that people represented on the spectrum. It's awful.

She is the reason people like us have to constantly mask in public. It’s either we get harassed and bullied and beaten or we’re treated like a cute puppy without a hind leg.
As a high functioning autistic person I can handle watching the scene, but it is offensive on multiple levels.
Either she is lying or didn't try hard enough in those three wasted years, especially with her partnership with Autism Speaks. It took me 3 seconds and a single google search to see why Autism Speaks was bad.
This is just a cash grab because in the interview where she says we have "special abilities" because apparently being autistic is the same as being part of the x men 🙄 but she said she hates musicals and yet she puts music in the film because they paid her more to do that and she did so that kind of hints that she was only in it for the cash.

please, i'm not looking for any arguments in my reply section so i'm not gonna waste any time replying, to those who will try to argue with me. i'm not autistic myself, but i have enough knowledge to know that this, being a film specifically made *for* the autistic community, there can be quite some people who are rather high on the spectrum and the colors in this music video can be quite overwhelming for them and isn't good for them. that's all the autistic community are complaining about. i'm sure sia put alot of effort into this film and had done quite some research for 3 years and i respect that! but within those 3 years maybe she should've come to realize sensory processing disorder, which frequently comes along with autism...
