I have a 58 and there really is nothing else like them! There's a vibe to them that no other guitar has. You just have to spend a little time with one to really understand.

That neck pickup. That's how they should sound. Open and with nice brightness. No idea why Gibson make them so dark and woolly now. Even models like the R9 sound like crap compared.
@@LfunkeyA Adjusting won't make it come alive. You can't raise it much look where is adjusted al ready that wouldn't make it sound better. Little bit louder...but that isn't the sound I want to hear. My comment was bridge pickup "nothing special".

Idk if it’s just me, but there is this extra percussive “scratchyness” in the tone of these 50s les pauls that really does it for me. I mean that is the sound man. None of the modern guitars quite hit that and I can’t for the life of me figure out why.
gibson custom reissues get most of that sound, like 90% +. some boutique replicas probably get even closer. the rest is age and materials/methods that are simply not available today.
wow , those PAFs are worth the price of admission , what a beast , a special kind of animal , the vintage LP is my dream guitar , and even tho I have a studio , a junior , a melody make , and an explorer , not to mention two epiphone LP's and a 76' Ibanez lawsuit model 59er , I still want a real vintage LP by gibson , a gold top or a standard , I'll have to win the lottery for that dream to happen , but a guy can dream..
The best overdriven sound on the planet, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck tone all over the place. The 50s gold top is far and away the most iconic tone in rock. With those PAFs the sustain is in a tunnel of infinity. Crunch and gain to spare, truly a beautiful piece of rock legend and it's history in every note.
Here before but y'all prob saw Hammet jamming with Schenker on TMS years ago. Krk "The Green LP has had a headstock repair".' Michael "The main V i used with UFO and MSG had two headstock repairs. Each time it sounded better".
Some of the best les Paul’s I’ve played have had neck repairs. I even had one I broke myself and it actually sounded better after the neck snapped and was repaired. I needed to take a bit away from the join to level it up so perhaps it was the change in break angle

mikey, that was Superlative and the guitar really sounded fabulous and there were moments when you and the rig just sounded like a record probably partly cause you were jazzed to play a 57. That guitar and possibly the amp will be sold by Monday...Thanks Jen for a great job recording!

Sometimes that’s a simple matter of how they’re adjusted and what you’re doing with the tone pot.

It's because the wiring was done differently back then. Often times you'll see guitars being sold with "50's wiring" :)
The main factor is unpotted pickups...all new ones are wax potted and cuts a lot of that great scratchy metallic hollowy sound.
