No three books have ever given me so much interest and pleasure to read as the Wolf Hall trilogy. I discovered the first book in a used book shop, long before the TV series, and it was such a treasure, it was a thrill to discover it. Please don’t criticize Mrs. Mantel, her condition is not from overeating, but is from the terrible disease she had. It must have taken this lady tremendous effort to finish the third book when she was so ill, but she didn’t want to let us down and it surpassed every expectation. What a brilliant mind and command of the English language she had. She will be greatly missed.
quite agree, I red the 3 already 4 times, and I read them again over and over, I mean ... it is such a delight , so well translated ... and a bit difficult to read too , because every line you have to find out who is speaking, who is answering, who is just thinking .. but I think this is on purpose , chaining the lecter over and over ! just gorgeous !
How utterly remarkable and sobering to see this interview two days after Hilary's death. That literary mind whose exquisite use of English coupled with meticulous research brought Thomas Cromwell and Henry and the Tudors and Howard's and Wyatts to our pandemic-addled selves. To hear her speak of perhaps some new book that may take two years that she will not have. What an absolute honor and gift to have had her literary star in this our time.
I never understood why historical fiction was looked down upon by so many, it’s the most difficult genre of all to write. Hardly anyone ever did it well, this lady is one of a very few who did.
I must say that I read the entirety of TM&TL in Mark Rylance's voice in my head. Fantastic work. It was wonderful to see that my viewpoint as a reader, matched with Ms. Mantel's expectation.
I fully agree. Something I never do is re-watch series or movies. I re-watched wolf hall immediately after I finished it. It's got an asmr quality foley production. The people and place feels truly other worldly.
I disagree. I've read much better books on this time period. Her writing is not clear or concise. I have never had to reread so many sentences and entire paragraphs just to try to understand what she's trying to say or which character is speaking. I enjoy reading so much I don't have a television because reading is better, but not Wolf Hall. Was so looking forward to reading the entire series but I'm beginning to doubt my ability to get through the first book.
@@blanchekonieczka9935 Yeah you have to be able to figure it out ! She is excellent at historical fiction and the wolf Hall series is equaled by her epic novel about Danton, Robespierre, and the French Revolution, also by Mantel....( I've read it twice, that last one, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the book lol)
I loved the books but my Dad found it too academic for a Novel. It didn't flow for him. I did get the hang of her style by the second book, Bring up the Bodies.
This interviewer is genius. What a fantastic mind. But I disagree that C doesn’t see his power falling, ebbing, bouncing about. His bewilderment and fear are beautifully and palpably rendered. Some of the most moving scenes are his confused recognition. ❤️
Well put . I have had same feeling about Oliver ( Antonio Frazer )and his courageous efforts and how supremely difficult it would seem to be to keep going on a daily basis.
Thank you Hillary for this great work. Having read your triology got me interested in Cromwell of couse, Henry VIII, the history of Great Britain etc. Already missing Cromwell...
Henry VIII is the prime example of "absolute power corrupts absolutely." He was a despotic, obese, stinky old tyrant. Ugh. Just ordered Ms Mantel's trilogy. I saw Wolf Hall on PBS and can't wait to read the books! Thanks for the upload!!
Nobody gets Henry's fear of civil war of their is no heir it had happened before in England. But the blow on the head where he was unconscious for a while saw him turn into amonster.
Zzzzz. When Ms Mantel decides Trump is ready to tear up our Constitution. You have that wrong. Yes, our politics is subject to gossip and prejudice particularly in our biased socialist media, but Trump is hardly ready to do that. Unfan me. She is a brilliant writer. Excellent dialogues.
Typical. She just made me not want to read her books because of her ignorant perception. Trump is the only one trying to keep to out constitution. Wonder what she thinks are Constitution is all about? Tyrants don't deregulate. They don't cut taxes. Trump's biggest problem besides being tacky, is that he is an outsider from the swamp. Hillary must prefer people who feed at the swamp at our expense. She's for the establishment Elites.
Yes, Lydia. Dems are either evil or stupid. Many simply have not invested the time to truly understand all the facts and ramifications of this rigged election. Mantel is obviously a brilliant writer. I guess she has spent so much time with Cromwell that she has failed to educate herself on our Constitution preferring, instead, to listen to the whacked out Commie British press. TRUMP🇺🇸👊🏻💪🏻
@@myfluffyflufferton I understand and have sympathy for how much more socialistic Brits are than we have been. It's what they know because so much of their social programs were once the benefice of the aristocracy so it's natural it evolved to the government. It's what they know. But it's not us.
@@MsPoshlife indeed! She is brilliant. Her dialogue is masterful. I wish there were interviews which delve into her writing dynamics. How does she write? There was one snippet in which she said she did not write chronologically, I believe. How does she manage all the facts and have every character speak differently? How did she master the idioms, etc. So she is genius, but as many , she has failed to understand American political issues.

Beyond fabulous. What a wise and brilliant woman. The light of the world is a little less bright without her.
We lost this wonderful creator of worlds too soon. Rest In Peace, our entirely beloved Hilary mantel.

What an amazing woman, blessings on her soul
Was so sad when she died. A true genius
Wonderful interview; thank you. Insightful on every score.
The miniseries "Wolf Hall" that is based on her book is one of the best things I've seen on that time period.
I just started watching the series! I'm in love with it. Amazing acting, soundtrack, everything is top notch. I'm only on episode 3!

riveting. I love this woman and her books
I've just started The Mirror & The Light. Her prose is sooooo exquisite! I have been highlighting the whole book arleady!

Ana, you write in books??? I just can't 😮😮
RIP Ms. Mantel

Cromwell's loyalty was to king & country he deserves respect.

Oh yes an anthology by Mantel would be marvellous. I wish her the best of health for the future from her fans.
All hail Queen Hilary

It's amazing that at the center of an empire existed the most disfunctional and irrational method for selecting prime authorities.
Henry VIII was a serial killer. R.I.P. Dame Hilary.
I adore her.

Poor Mrs. Mantel, her serious health problems recently killed her. The world lost the greatest writer of this generation, so sad.

Too bad she got President Trump all wrong. He is nothing like she describes. Other than that I love her - she is brilliant.
