I got a 90D a few months ago...it's been quite an upgrade from the M50, that now is my backup camera, but I am planning to buy an EOS R....first of all because I've never owned a full frame and then also because of the higher bit rate, the C-log...and the overall quality of the EOS R. It's true that I can shoot videos for my channel with any camera but, as you said, when we upgrade our gear at the same time we improve the quality and we get more inspiration and motivation. That said, buying expensive or relatively expensive stuff should not become an addiction... Great video, Cody, as usual!

This was an Agree. Agree. Agree. I ended up carrying 2 cameras. An 80D for all pictures and a GH5 for the videos. I will do something similar, 3 months was not enough to fill up the learning curve with the GH5. I will shoot with it for 2-3 years and will see what's happening after.
To share some of my loves with this video: your enthusiasm is just amazing! It's very evident, but it's not fake. The best parts are when you make yourself laugh. You are definitely cut out to be a TH-cam personality that's for sure. And now to share a frustration I personally have with the GH5 is the record button...it often doesn't register and I'll be thinking I'm filming while meantime my camera is laughing at me! I've only had the camera for like 2 months so maybe it's just me...
@@RCodyWanner Thanks for your response. I have once or twice, but I need to experiment with it more. I feel that it is placed in a better position on the body for my index finger to side onto, as opposed to the other button which I have to use my thumb on.
Great video, I've been using both the EOS r and the GH5 too, EOS R is super easy to color grade in C log, and just looks so good. BUT, the GH5 does have 4k 60p, which I use a lot more slow mo B roll shots and love, so there's that. Plus it looks sooo good as well, even in standard or natural. V LOG is trickier to grade correctly, I agree with you - but still looks great if you get it right. Great video!
Dude I was so happy to see you make this video, because I’ve been debating doing the same one - and now I don’t have to. Switched from GH5 to EOS R 2 months ago, and you basically nailed my biggest pet peeves. On the one hand, low light, dynamic range, autofocus, full frame look - all fantastic, and the reason I switched. But it’s the little things that drive me crazy: 1. Not being able to one hand turn on/select modes. Left side on/off and the pain of switching from video to photo is super frustrating. 2. LEVEL - YES. I thought I was missing something, but so weird that it’s built in, but I can’t use it in the mode I usually want to. 3. AUDIO - ALSO YES. I’ve had such a difficult time getting audio to sound good. It either peaks too much, or in auto it isn’t quite loud enough. The GH5 was bullet proof in this regard, no matter what mic I used, it always sounded great. EOS R is more of a crapshoot. All those seems like they should be minor, but they have been surprisingly frustrating with workflow. Thanks again for all the solid content.

To be honest, as soon as I confirmed the order, my brain started saying, you should have gotten the a7 III and then the universe pushing all these Sony ads haha. Thank you for this video! I am using my Samsung Galaxy phone for recording videos and I am looking to upgrade my equipment as my YT channel is growing. But I'm scared! Especially after hearing you talk shop about these two cameras. It's going to be a learning curve for sure. I am going to start with some used equipment and I see a Panasonic GH4 for sale with a bunch of lenses. What do you think of the GH4? Is it much different than the GH5? Would it be a little too complicated for a beginner like me? Or should I go with a Canon? I also see a Cannon EOS RP Full Frame camera for sale too. It's a little more expensive but is it better to pay more for the features the Canon has? Thanks for your guidance and a take this leap! 😬📷
The RP is SUCH a fantastic camera - highly recommend that one. The issue with the gh4 is it has horrible autofocus. The RP has great autofocus and wonderful color

Still love canon color after leaving it 4 years ago now haha I will say the biggest misconception of the gh5 is it doesn’t have true VLog. It’s V-log L which is less dynamic range than true vlog. I think this has to do with the smaller sensor but after shooting with the Panasonic EVA-1 there’s a huge difference in how much more room you have to work with. C-log on full frame will always win though because some hardware (full frame sensor) does effect dynamic range.
This is EXACTLY the video I was waiting for! When you announced that you got the R I was “praying” that you would do a comparison of sort. I think you can do another one with more “in depth” of the difference, since I believe many are interested in switching GH5 for an R (I’m one of them 🙋♂️). My main reason at the moment are all the custom buttons on my GH5 and 60fps in 4K. Do you miss that? Great video as always, let’s get this thing! 🙌

I’ve never tried the GH5, but I’ve heard a lot about it, mostly that it’s great in low light, with the lens I got I’m having some issues with low light conditions, hence I wanna buy the 15-35 which opens at 2.8! I have a question, maybe one of y’all in the comments can help me out :) I’m very new to videography. I have a nice camera, but half the time my footage is just not as crisp as I’d like it to be - is poor lighting one of the reasons that can happen? Are there other common mistakes I could be making?

How has your experience been with the R digital stabilization vs the GH5 IBIS?

How about exposure metering? Am I the only one that is going crazy that it doesn’t stay on screen once recording starts. I’m always mashing the * button and I hate it. Such a weird quirk. Otherwise...very nice camera.
I don't have a dog in the camera fight. I use Nikon for stills and Sony for video, go figure. But I was wondering how the EOS R did for video so this was very helpful. Cody, as always, quite entertaining too. 😁

DPAF doesn't help when your lens has horrible, horrible lens breathing. But anyways, they are tools pick what works best for you and use it. You don't have to join the brand cult if you buy some brand's camera!

Both awesome cameras. Canon is easier to use and fullframe is really nice. But still the GH5 has better video quality - the look is just fantastic. And for me the 4K crop of the EOS R is really painful. Without that I might add it to my GH5, A7 III, BMPCC4K and 6400 ... and GH5 of course 😂 Inly Canons I still have are 5D Mark II and XC 10 ... used Canon for more than 30 years, so a few have to stay . Oh - yes, I really like the video, Cody 😊
As a GH5 user, why would the 4K crop on the EOS R be so painful? If the crop of the R is less than the crop (sensor size) of the GH5, wouldn't it be more painful to use the GH5?
Moving Photo Productions No. I know what you mean, but I would prefer to have the exact same „crop“ in all resolutions . So if you switch from HD to 4K or vice versa it’s totally annoying
@@EMBEVIDEO Yeah, I can definitely see that. Lens choices start becoming more of factor i guess, right? I just usually stay with the same resolution with whatever I'm filming, so it hasn't been an issue for me, but good point.
@@movingphotoproductions2830 If you're using the GH5, you're already using focal lengths that are optimized for that 2x crop. With the EOS R's crop, your lenses are going to act differently if you switch between 4k and 1080p. It's almost like if you sometimes shoot in 1080p and sometimes in 4k, you'd have to have a full frame optimized lens kit plus an APS-C kit. Depends on the user though.
I got the same exact scenario. Been using GH5 for 3 years and just ordered the EOS R, just bcz of the auto focus and canon colour. Can’t wait to get my arms around it!

I use the shutter button as the record button on the gh5! Bigger and easier to press - have you tried that?

what is a "C-log" ? I shoot 90% of my videos on my iphone or on a GoPro. so I don't know anything about that technical aspect of it
It’s a flat color profile that gives you more leverage in exposure and color grading after the fact

cody did you not shoot in 10-bit on the gh5? i feel like that thing would give you more dynamic range and ability to colour grade
Nope never did! Was always (and still am) happy with the natural color out of the camera

DPAF doesn't help when your lens has horrible, horrible lens breathing. But anyways, they are tools pick what works best for you and use it. You don't have to join the brand cult if you buy some brand's camera!

For cinematic filmmaking short films and stuff which do you recommend.. canon eos r6, Panasonic gh5 or canon 5d mark iv?
Both awesome cameras. Canon is easier to use and fullframe is really nice. But still the GH5 has better video quality - the look is just fantastic. And for me the 4K crop of the EOS R is really painful. Without that I might add it to my GH5, A7 III, BMPCC4K and 6400 ... and GH5 of course 😂 Inly Canons I still have are 5D Mark II and XC 10 ... used Canon for more than 30 years, so a few have to stay . Oh - yes, I really like the video, Cody 😊
As a GH5 user, why would the 4K crop on the EOS R be so painful? If the crop of the R is less than the crop (sensor size) of the GH5, wouldn't it be more painful to use the GH5?
Moving Photo Productions No. I know what you mean, but I would prefer to have the exact same „crop“ in all resolutions . So if you switch from HD to 4K or vice versa it’s totally annoying
@@EMBEVIDEO Yeah, I can definitely see that. Lens choices start becoming more of factor i guess, right? I just usually stay with the same resolution with whatever I'm filming, so it hasn't been an issue for me, but good point.
@@movingphotoproductions2830 If you're using the GH5, you're already using focal lengths that are optimized for that 2x crop. With the EOS R's crop, your lenses are going to act differently if you switch between 4k and 1080p. It's almost like if you sometimes shoot in 1080p and sometimes in 4k, you'd have to have a full frame optimized lens kit plus an APS-C kit. Depends on the user though.
