My stepson did that when he was eight. He took kitchen shears and cut his hair on the side of his head, to the scalp. The repair job, required cutting it quite a bit shorter than usual. We had a neighbor who had her two daughters got a hold of her sewing shears and cut their hair that was past their elbows, to the point that the salon had to give each a boy short haircut to fix the damage, the girls didn’t like the short haircuts and promised they would never cut their own hair again.
Yes, kids do these things. Thankfully with my stepson, his hair grew back fast, a few weeks later, when I gave him a haircut, it was the regular length. A 1/2 inch on a boy, versus 8-10 inches on a girl is a big difference, that will take years to grow back, versus a few weeks.
Im watching this video because my 8 year old allowed another friend to cut her hair. This is probably the 5 time in 2 to 3 years. Almost as if she allows it to just keep it in a state of disarray. Each time she's done it, the consquences, and show of anger/frustration was exasperated more then the last. This time i about lost it. I tell her everymorning how im starting to finally be able to pull it all back, and constantly remind her not to cut. Its not a slip up, its not a mistake im judgement with unforseeable consequences. After all the discussions, lectures, then yelling and punishments, this time feels like deliberate disrespect. Anyways, this video didnt really help. This reminds me of how i handled the 1st and 2nd time. The 3rd, i was a little explosive. The fourth time she was grounded for a week with no phone. 5 time, im at a loss. She is grounded and gonna have to experience a long drawn out process in which she feels cutting her own hair isnt worth the experience. It kind of makes me feel bad to have to say no all the time, and sit at home miserable doing nothing, and when the consequences are over, ill still be pissed every morning i do her hair.
Parenting is so hard! We do the best we can, but as parents I think we fear that our own parenting skills aren’t good enough to raise the most important people in our lives- our children. Sending you love on your parenting journey. 🫶
