Simone , The Angel of Epica and Mark, The demon of Epica !!!!! Epica is Epic (well deserved name for the band). Along with Nightwish, they are in the symphonic metal category, but generally are heavier. Lead singer is Simone Simons, and male vocalist is guitarist Mark Jansen. Mark and Floor are not related ,but were in After Forever together (Floor's first band she joined at 16). Being familiar with all their stuff, they still keep me amazed by their talent and epicness, which is just keep growing for almost 20 years. It’s like too much to be from this world, especially when you realize they have about 10 masterpieces in this scale, ballads that will make you cry, countless top-notch badass songs, great covers, orchestral and acoustic versions, insightful lyrics and great stage presence.. enough talent for 20 bands combined. I remember The Hooters fondly, very underrated band. I have also been lucky enough to see Epica live a couple of times and they are absolutely fantastic, so fun to watch as they have some slick stage moves and goof around a lot onstage without detracting from the fantastic music
The shows are Epic. Another dutch female singer who is amazing. But also this band....love there music for years now. Epica is a bit more metal in relation to Nightwish, Ayreon is more prog and Star One is more the Space metal side of this.

Epica is a dutch band. There are a lot of great symphonic metal bands from The Netherlands and a lot of talent for such small country. Epica, After Forever, Within tenptation, After Forever (Floor’s first band), Revamp, Delain, Ayreon and Star One, Mayan and so on. I’m spanish, not dutch, but I do love the country and appreciate its metal scene.
French Guy here who loved symphonic metal since inception in 1993 and the two former band of this genre: Theatre of Tragedy and.. The Gathering with Anneke… also a Dutch band! Without TG, none of the band u mentionned will be here today ;) and by the way, this live version of CtO is in my top 3 ever in this genre without any doubt
To be fair this is their most growl heavy song, most songs are like 90-100% Simone injecting pure beauty into your ears. Try for instance Rivers, Tides of Time, Once Upon a Nightmare, Unleashed, Chasing The Dragon and many more. Completely soul melting voice this woman has.
10:58 is sadly the reason bands such as Epica et al will never commercially break through in the US. It doesn't fit the ad break format for 3-4 min songs.

Their melodies and overall musical compositions are top notch, not to mention divine Simone. Btw, the growling guy is Mark Jansen, the founder and mastermind of Epica (and Simone's ex-boyfriend). 4 out of 6 band members have degree in music. All lyrics are written either by Mark or Simone. Just like Nightwish, Epica is a great journey. Do some more Epica asap, please :) I would suggest: Epica - The Essence Of Silence (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO) - slightly heavier but not too long, again a nice duality between Mark's harsh vocals and Simone's angelic soprano EPICA - A Phantasmic Parade (OFFICIAL EUROPEAN PRINCIPLE TOUR AFTERMOVIE) - this song was written by Epica drummer and it's a great fun too, especially the middle section is insane. These Epica aftermovies are amazing videos too. The song is a critique of the high stress rat race. The growly parts are about the shallow materialistic life, while Simone's parts(and the choir singing in Latin) are trying to give some advice. Many of their songs are about philosophy, self development, spirituality and social issues. To say it like a old hippie, this is a high frequency band making high frequency music about high frequency topics.

The song is a critique of the high stress rat race. The growly parts are about the shallow materialistic life, while Simone's parts(and the choir singing in Latin) are trying to give some advice. Many of their songs are about philosophy, self development, spirituality and social issues.
To say it like a old hippie, this is a high frequency band making high frequency music about high frequency topics.
We have the best metal goddesses in the Netherlands, Simone, Floor, Anneke, etc etc. 🤘😎🤘

I like Epica, but Mark is not my thing. Some songs it's okay, but most of the songs not. There are enough songs for me!
I really like Epica, but I wish there was more Simone and less of the screaming/growling nonsense. I think that’s something I would have thought was cool when I was in junior high or something. Now, I’d just rather hear Simone.
About 1/3 of their songs is Simone only, more then half is 80% Simone and some growls for texture and energy.
