I love that care was taken to match the color of the original glass. I use 3D graphics software out of personal interest, and the apperance and feel, if you will, of a material, really makes all the difference in the world. I imagine that the refractive index of acrylic is very different from the glass that was originally used and I really appreciate the effort put into the design of these lenses to match the original appearance.

Thank you! Fascinating about something I knew practically nothing about. Human imagination and engineering makes the world go round!

What a wonderful mini-movie! I was able to travel back in time" and enjoy this magical moment of restoring the beautiful Fresnel prism lens for lighthouses of all sizes and shapes. I had no idea!

Really liked the video - went to the lighthouse in St. Augustine a little while ago and I went on a kick on doing some personal research / deep diving to learn some more stuff about them.
I'm always especially interested in hearing how old technologies and tactics are re-created in the present day!

It would be great if they put a Fresnel lens back into the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse using this process!

How old was the "child" who shot at the lighthouse, and what was he doing with a high-powered rifle? (I'm thinking it was a "minor," a teenage adolescent probably). Just think, the kid was willing to shoot at ANYTHING he saw; and little did he know it would be a MILLION DOLLAR "mistake." I'd hate to be the parents responsible for this!
So glad the good people of the Forest Service and volunteers were able to finally repair the Fresnel Lens, and learn how to make replicas in current times using acrylic instead of glass. Something good out of something bad.

AWESOME video. Great 3D graphics and very informative. I've always been fascinated by lighthouse fresnel lenses. Beautiful, functional art in a way. Thanks for posting! Subscribed.

I wouldnt of guessed it was acrylic, how does it hold up to years of uv exposure?

There ain't a lot I wouldn't do to get ahold of one of those 4th or 6th order lenses. They say gold and diamonds are a thing but for me it's brass and glass. Or in this case acrylic.

Hi There, I'm looking for Chance brothers lenses, could you tell me if some or all you have featured here originate from Chance. I'm doing a lighthouse links project with Schools in the UK. I know that there were 75 sent to the states but that's all I know, I don't know where they were situated. If there is any thing you could share with me I would be very grateful. Thank you!

Nita, I haven't worked on any Chance Brothers lenses myself, but do know a few Coast Guard approved lampists that may have more knowledge of where some of them may be located. If you'd like to send me a private email, I could give you their contact info. My email link is on my website...www.artworks-florida.com

Nita, I don't know if it helps you but there is a huge section of a Chance Bros. lens on ebay... It's been there forever. I think it's well out of the normal enthusiasts price range but it IS there. Easy search would pull it right up.

G'day Nita,The original lens is long gone, but the lighthouse at Crowdy Head ,New South Wales,Australia ,was made by Chance Brothers.I was lucky enough to go inside a few months ago and at the top of the beautiful spiral staircase ,is a brass plaque which reads made by Chance Brothers 1879. Hope this is of interest .. Charlie .

good video. The music is distracting! It's too loud especially when you there's dialog ( of course it's a nice piece of music, just unwelcome when trying to watch the video.) Would have been interesting to understand the technical details of how a fresnel lens works. What does first order mean in this context?
