In the early 1970's my dad was performing a cross country flight when they stopped for dinner. After dinner we needed to go just a bit farther, but the sun had set. And there were no lights on this part of the ramp so dad was trying to perform the preflight with a tiny little pen light. They were next to a 727 and the 727 pilots turned on the landing lights which lit up the entire area, making the preflight inspection much easier. Once he got the engine going and the radio turned on he called the 727 to thank them for the light. When a female voice said, "you're welcome" he asked if it was Bonnie Tiburzi. It was! He'd been extremely pleased to read about Bonnie Tiburzi being hired by American Airlines in 1973 as the first female airline pilot. My dad was a flight instructor and he had many female students, some of whom went on to become airline pilots.

In 1982, I was working in a large engineering company and hired a woman engineer (the first one to work that company). As usual, the first day of work, I took her around the office to introduce her to the other coworkers. My dad, a farm boy, was stationed at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio during World War II. He told a story about watching a new B-17 bomber land and taxi one day. He described it as confident, almost showy. The pilot dropped out of the cockpit door and peeled off the flight helmet. My dad was astonished to see her long blond hair tumble down! It sure made him think to see that female ferry pilot handle that bomber.

When I interviewed for a flight attendant position with American Airlines, I saw a lady pilot within a small group of male pilots. At that moment, I decided I wanted to fly the plane, not serve drinks. I have my multi-engine, commercial pilot's license.
Amelia Earhart would've rolled over in her grave, at that kind of gender bias. My mother and Father were both certified pilots, no wonder I got my first certification at age 17 (that was the youngest you could be to be eligible for a pilot's license). While I don't have the resources to keep up my flight time, I can and do still fly, Its just that I do it in hang gliders and parasails.
My dream would be to be rich and have my wife and I take pilot classes, be able to purchase a private jet and fly with her (I'll let her have the left seat) anywhere we want. I think I trust a woman as my co pilot in a plane more than a man, to be honest. Men take too many risks.

Bonanza Airlines out of Las Vegas, Nevada had a woman pilot flying there DC-3's late 1940 early 1950. also first male pilot that carried a pistol on board.

Peoples perceptions are interesting to watch. So much is due to time, place and circumstances. My great grand mother was a pilot with the Air transport Auxiliary working for the RAF. The Americans had the Women Air Force Service Pilots. After WW2 the women were expected to help rebuild the shattered countries by having babies and not taking work from men. Societies are very malleable and the expectations change with the threats to them.
Although I applaud women’s rights, what I do miss is the luxury of flying back then. Both men and woman dressed so nicely. And what is so wrong for a woman looking so beautiful and men so handsome? That’s what attracts you to someone in the beginning.

The real first female pilot for American Airlines was Bonnie Tiburzi in the 1970's. It's nice that today women are plentiful in aviation all over the world. When people say, "most females are not pilots", they forget that most males are not pilots either. We are a very small group.

The stewardess at the end of this episode is precious. This segment was filmed 57 years ago so the stewardess would be in her early eighties by now (assuming she was 24 years old during this interview).

When I interviewed for a flight attendant position with American Airlines, I saw a lady pilot within a small group of male pilots. At that moment, I decided I wanted to fly the plane, not serve drinks.

Amelia Earhart would've rolled over in her grave, at that kind of gender bias. My mother and Father were both certified pilots, no wonder I got my first certification at age 17 (that was the youngest you could be to be eligible for a pilot's license). While I don't have the resources to keep up my flight time, I can and do still fly, Its just that I do it in hang gliders and parasails.

My dream would be to be rich and have my wife and I take pilot classes, be able to purchase a private jet and fly with her (I'll let her have the left seat) anywhere we want. I think I trust a woman as my co pilot in a plane more than a man, to be honest. Men take too many risks.

Women in WWII flew B17s and Lancasters and fighter planes and everything else on ferry flights. Russian women flew in combat. Seems strange that just 15 years later all that was forgotten.

For us, the size of the camera didn't matter much (light was a bigger problem in my father's day). The camera was always behind a two-way mirror or, more often, a contraption that involved a TelePrompter effect. Peoples perceptions are interesting to watch. So much is due to time, place and circumstances. My great grand mother was a pilot with the Air transport Auxiliary working for the RAF. The Americans had the Women Air Force Service Pilots. After WW2 the women were expected to help rebuild the shattered countries by having babies and not taking work from men. Societies are very malleable and the expectations change with the threats to them.
Back then aeroplanes were simple enough for women to fly.

Although I applaud women’s rights, what I do miss is the luxury of flying back then. Both men and woman dressed so nicely. And what is so wrong for a woman looking so beautiful and men so handsome? That’s what attracts you to someone in the beginning.
What men were handsome back then on planes? The stewardesses were beautiful for the male passengers. There wasn’t any eye candy for female passengers, definitely.

Hilarious! The first guy says, "She asked what time it was", lol. I guess he was just happy she didn't ask for directions or which way was East. As a licensed pilot, I don't know a single pilot that isn't on the ball when it comes to preparedness, so I'd be inclined to spot the prank right off the bat. If a pilot is asking YOU questions, question your choice of getting into the aircraft with them.
