    ATTN ALL MUSICIANS! This guy is the BEST! I've personally applied nearly every method/technique you can imagine to clean my strings in the past, and thought I had it down to a science. Even w. my ultrasonic and an assortment of cleaning detergents, solvents, applicators, drying rags, blah, blah, blah, I'd realistically only prolonged the string's life. Repeated winding and unwinding, alone, kills them.
    Pffft.. Fug ALL Dat!
    Groovy, my man! Thank You, Sir!
    This is truly, the BEST, QUICKEST, MOST EFFICIENT, and absolutely FREE way, I've ever seen. ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!!! Using NO other ingredients, whatsoever! And the best part? It, literally, only takes a SNAP! (pun fully, intended)
    "Groovy Music Lessons", are you related to Meatloaf? But I digress.
    Groovy, you fuggin' ROCK, brother!
    Give this damn vid a "LIKE", for this guy, all you that watched it! At this time it has, what? Not even 34,000 views? Sheesh! Every damned player of a stringed instrument should watch this.
    This is the first "Like", and U-boob comment I've ever left. Well deserved!

    Groovy Music Lessons Hey Scott, THANK YOU A LOT. I've learned about guitars from your videos more then through my entire life talking to people having no idea what they are retranslating. So much bs around and finally someone telling what is really there. If feels like fresh air after trying to get all that bs around. Thank for making me free of bs !!! Please ignore those who doesnt understand, I've seen so much of stupidity among such people in my field where I know better then them.They would say "arrogant" or laugh without actually even understanding what they were told. It's a pity I didn't stumble on your videos earlier but believe me, it's enough that ten like me will find you to spread knowledge around. I like your method because fighting so much of bs around takes some insisting and if they can't respect strong position or have lack of humour, it's their problems ... Thank you again for precious advises!!!

    Hey Scott I have a 12 string cort guitar which I took six strings off and made it a 6 string it sounds good and I have had it sitting in its case for years
    Well after seeing you cleaning your strings I decided to get mine out of its case and yes they were really dirty and really dull so I got a cloth and some 70% Proof alcohol and Banged the strings and clean them and what do you know the life came back they sound really really good
    Thanks Dr groovy

    You're always right. From a violin website: "Put a few drops of the alcohol on a clean cloth and rub the strings. Since alcohol damages the violin's varnish, however, it is very important to use a bare minimum so that nothing drips onto the instrument. Other kinds of dirt such as grease are best avoided altogether. Washing one’s hands before playing is not only a good habit, but an important means of maintaining the value of your stringed instrument." Thanks for teaching us to prevent us from destroying our guitars!

      My pleasure my friend. Other people will argue with me until the day they die because they think I'm out to break everybody's axes for some reason. lol If people would stop following what makes no sense, they would be better off. I've seen TREES grow tall and strong my whole life with nothing but water to feed it. Never saw a tree flourish with oils, finishes and lighter fluid dumped into its roots daily. lol Cheers.

    I must admit that the first method you suggested seemed a bit off the wall to me but damn it, your simple loosening and snapping sure works far better than anything I ever tried.. I used to wipe my strings at the end of a session or gig with an alcohol soaked rag, and I played pro for 20+ years but NEVER heard of your far better and simple cleaning trick. You are da man, so sorry the trolls made you decide to quit.

    It is quite simple to be honest!
    Buy yourself an ultrasonic cleaner then add some acetone and the purest alcohol you can get. Either denatured alcohol or the highest proof you can get at the liquor store. ( no water) 96% or higher. Add a fifty fifty mix to the tub then turn it on. Five minutes on the ultrasonic has been more than enough for me. The strings will dry almost immediately so you can reinstall them right away.
    Note! If you add lower proof alcohol it will have trouble mixing with the acetone.

    Great to know and a lifesaver for bass players, but I took Scott's advice and switched to Elixir Polywebs. My strings never go dead no matter how much sweat and finger grot they are exposed to. Polywebs are cheaper than uncoated strings coz they last 10+ times longer. Cheers Scott, you saved me money and grief.

  • @smolderingtitan
    @smolderingtitan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does that popping technique work because it flicks off dirt or because it does something else to the string?

    • @groovydjs
      @groovydjs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works because of flicking the dirt. It won't work if it is tuned up to pitch though. The strings just have to be backed off just enough to allow for the coils to ease up their tension around the core to let the coils loosen their grip on the dried up dirt so that the flicking will work.

    Hey Scott- for really cruddy strings like these- once you've popped off the dirt to get them clean, Soak them in Pineapple juice to get the shit off! (Then give them a good rinse and thorough dry afterwards with paper towels and a light /warm (not scorching) hair dryer(Remember, rust only sets in when oxidization occurs, not drying them off means the Oxygen molecules in H2O get into the metal and start the chemical reaction at a molecular level, therefore oxidizing faster))- the enzymes from the juice break down meat proteins (That's why pineapple tingles sometimes when you eat it, because its eating you!)- It's cheap, no need to buy crappy branded cleaners that cost £10 a bottle!

    • @groovydjs
      @groovydjs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There you go. Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a shot on the used guitars that come in here with those barbed wire strings on them. Always up for a new science project. THANK YOU!

    • @ravenshield56
      @ravenshield56 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Groovy Music Lessons Not problem! it's always worth trying something new! I must note that tinned pineapples don't work so well because of the added syrup they add- and if the pineapple has been secreting in its own fluid for god knows how long! So fresh (even slightly un-ripe) are best- even a full pineapple over here (UK) costs less than £1! y never know, it might not do shit for you- but always worth a try!

    Greay video man. Hey Scott. I know you have owned the PS10 series models. the real ones. I drooled over every video they just had a glimps of one showing. Do you think it would be worth my time of saving up for a PS40? I saw one on craigslist for $360 at a music store in Jeffersonville IN. Do you think they would be worth trying to get or are they junk? I'm currently trying to get a new amp. the Johnson Millenium JB150 if I can find one pretty cheap. But you know I love the Iceman and didn't know if that would be a waste of money or not.

      The guy on Craig's list is high as a kite. They sell brand new ANYWHERE for $299.00 with free shipping and all the junk that comes with them. They are pretty much toys, but they look good on the wall or as a lamp. There aren't many great Iceman guitars that have been made in recent years. Stay away from the IC300 The IC400 is the nicest one that has been made since the 70's.

    Hey Scott, I found a 1981 Takamine f400s 12 string for sale. Costs about $650, do you think it's worth the price? (I know there are better prices on eBay etc. but considering shipping fee + I have pay 20% customs tax if the product is over $100 offer seems decent.) Also great new info, my Elixir strings died out long time ago, maybe this will bring them back to life.

    I am a jeweler and I just put my strings in the ultrasonic cleaner to get all of the dirt out. it works getting all of the dirt from the tiniest crevices.

    I need to do this on the G string on my Recording King. Will it work, because the string is rusted?

    But if strings will no longer stay in tune...that's separate than just bringing back tone, no? Something about the metal itself starting to fail, correct?

    • @groovydjs
      @groovydjs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had a single string in my life that wouldn't stay in tune any longer. When strings are stretched, there is no more stretch to ever be had. If a string is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY rusted beyond belief, it will hold tune until it simply breaks.
