A soldadera, also known as an adelita, was a woman involved in the Mexican Revolution, fighting or accompanying soldiers.
The role of the soldadera in the revolution varied. The soldaderas fought or worked as cooks, nurses, among other activities to help in the revolutionary struggle.
"...without them the soldiers would not have eaten or slept or fought."
There were a large number of soldaderas who fought, and some became famous, such as Petra Herrera, Beatriz González Ortega and Angela Jiménez.
It is worth noting that while soldaderas could fight if they wanted to, their most common roles were to protect their husbands and families from disease and starvation.
The soldaderas also represented a change in female identities. Women did tasks considered masculine and after the revolution, mainly in the 1920s and 1930s, people in Mexico underwent a social gender change.
