"Bells" was a strong player inside and used his strong legs and hips to his advantage against Alcindor and other excellent centers. Alcindor had a tough time with Bells because Bells knew how to position himself, used excellent footwork, and had Hall of Fame skills. Bellamy was a big center yet had an good midrange game, could drive to the hoop on anybody, and could run the floor so he was as mobile as any big center in the history of the game. How many 6'11" centers in the history of the basketball were as effective from the triple threat position as Bells? Not many. Thanks for the update on one of the greatest centers of all-time.

To me he’s easily a top 10 center ever and I have him 8th. The teams he was on in his prime were horrible. The Packers (who were an expansion team) outside of Bellamy had horrible spacing and defense which is why Bellamy could rarely find team success. Slick Leonard and Andy Johnson were his best teammates that season and they’re both known for being inefficient players especially when Andy Johnson was on the Warriors. It’s amazing how Bellamy was still able to be a walking 32 and 19 that season while leading the league in efficiency when he had the worst spacing in the entire league while being an elite slasher and good shooter. If he was at least a slightly below average FT shooter then his efficiency would be even more insane than it already was. Plus his coach Jim Pollard was a rookie coach and ignored defensive schemes just like Jack McMahon did the next season who was also infamous for neglecting the Royals defense.

Wilt also went up against Bill Russell for 10 games. That meant 25% of Wilt's games were played against Hall of Fame centers. Do any of the top flight centers of today even play 15 games per season against their "Equals".

Bellamy's match-up with Wilt was amazing fun. He would take Wilt to the hoop and get his shot blocked; get it back; get it blocked, get it back, etc. The statistics were crazy. Bellamy would try to score 15 times, score 30 points but the stats would show 12 for 35 or something like that.

I saw Mr. Bellamy play briefly as a four year old during his junior year at Indiana. the NBA was hardly available on network TV until late in his career when had moved onto Atlanta. A center on the real Olympic Dream Team in 1960; no one has matched his athleticism and skill except perhaps Olajuwan who was a significantly smaller man. Mr. Bellamy never played on teams equal to those that included Russell, Chamberlain, Jabbar, or even Nate Thurmond. After retirement he lived in Atlanta where he was known for his support and participation in the Urban League and the NAACP as well as the Georgia State Senate where he served as doorman. Under the coaching of Branch McCracken, who was the college player of the year at center in 1928 (as Bellamy was in 1961. Mr. Bellamy was a true student athlete and as can be witnessed in the footage, a well spoken man proud of his education. McCracken coached five consensus All American centers at Indiana, from the 6'3" Bill Garrett , the first starting African American varsity basketball player in the Big Ten, to the 6'11" Bellamy. A rough country boy by some accounts McCracken was a life long educator not much different than John Wooden, his childhood friend and neighbor and professional teammate when they were high school teachers in the thirties (They entered the Hall of Fame together as players in it's second year). Bellamy was not only a truly gifted and skilled athlete he was a fellow citizen worthy of anyone's admiration and respect.

If I remember correctly, he holds the NBA record for most games played in a single season (1968-69) When NY traded him to Detroit. Not necessarily an accomplishment 100% within his control, just the luck that the teams schedules were the way they were.... not diminishing the fact he played every game in a season unlike today's players. He never seemed to get injured either.

This dude could have killed it in 2022...Hes got the size n strength, can run the floor like a deer, cteate his own shots,, finish,, and has a real mental and physical toughness u don't see today.
