Javelina Drops Like a Rock to my Seneca Recluse .357 Air Rifle!

- On a recent hunt in Texas, I had a Javalina Drops Like a Rock to my .357 Dragon Claw Air Rifle! There are several great new big bore air rifles coming to market, along with many old favorites. But one of the earlier big bores that I’ve used to take deer, hogs, and predators has been rebranded, and continues to offer a solid big bore hunting rifle at a reasonable price. The Air Venturi Seneca Recluse .357 air rifle. This rifle offers what you need to hunt larger game in the field: accuracy, power, reliability, and shootability, and does it without breaking the bank.

And is often the case, part of the adventure is the journey. I loaded up my Bronco, installed a nice thick foam pad to sleep on, window covers for privacy, and used my ride as a portable hotel during the drive down. Traveling this way has opened my hunting territory and increased opportunities significantly and provides comfort and flexibility for the traveling hunter! Unlike when I fly in for a destination hunt, driving in this rig lets me haul all the guns and gear I’ll need.

I hunt sitka blacktail deer primarily with my single tube Recluse on Graham Island 🇨🇦. I find 67 grain round ball just as effective at dropping deer as heavier slugs and pellets and I mostly use the roundball. My Recluse is untuned and i hunt with iron sights. Hunting here means pushing through thick, wet bush and most of the deer I bump into at 25-35 yards. I like having no sling or scope to get hung up in branches though I've taken to pocketing a removable strap so I can wear my gun when I'm packing out a deer. I think it's a shame that the single tube Recluse appears to be discontinued in favour of the double tube. The single tube is reputed to have a stock higher shot velocity and the five full power hunting shots I get are more than enough to shoot and dispatch more than one deer I may see on a big hike-in. The single tube just seems like a nicer sized gun to carry in the bush. I would buy another one if I could find it. I may occasionally hunt with scoped, powder burning rifles or with a crossbow but after one outing I want to go back to the Recluse as to me it's the most versatile. I like that I can switch to low power and headshot a grouse accurately while I'm out hunting deer. I have yet to try firing arrows but want to. I would like to try for a local elk or even a blackbear one day assuming I get good results with arrows first. The .357 arrows are still unavailable in Canada but I saw a guy on YT chucking regular crossbow bolts with minor modifications from his Recluse so it's worth looking into.

there's something about taking a long drive to hunt, makes it seem more worth it, the stakes are higher! it's not like just grabbing your rifle and going to the woods behind your house

Agreed, it all about getting close. It would seem that hinting over a protein feeder would be easy, but everything is jumpy and there’s little cover to hide behind…….about half the deer that came in knew something wasn’t right, but not sure what!
I was offered a seneca back then and i actually passed it off as just another untested expensive AG

Hi Carlos, I see it and want to go out again! Going to load up and drive up to Wisconsin tomorrow morning for a squirrel hunt. I had a Sumatra 2500 .25 about 15 years ago that I sold, and been kicking myself over that one for almost as long!
Yes, powerful and I really liked the magazine on those . All metal and long enough for both pellets and slugs. Well maybe someday.

Awesome hunt Jim and I love my recluse had it for a bout 6 years now great shooter but I have a question that's kinda off topic I had a sumatra carbine in 25cal I let a friend use it never seen him again was wondering if you know where I could get one from
I almost take down a javelina with a gauntlet 2 cal .25 but I was using bad pellets so, the javelina get hurt and I didn't find it
I am debating 4 guns . .72 caliber Zeus by AEA , .50 caliber challenger by AEA, The Hammer by Umarex and the Winchester model 70 in 45 caliber. I do not want a single shot but no one makes a magazine feed worth a damn yet for these big bores other than the Hammer and that thing does not look durable to me.
Anyone out there know of a better multi shot big bore I should be looking at?
I like the Zeus based on what I've seen of the carbine on the range, but won't get my first hunt in with it until next month. Is there a reason you don't look at the Texan? It's a solid performer.
@@americanairgunhunter . .My issue with the Texan is one of those things that has little to do with the quality of the product. It starts because I want a PCP that gives me a follow up shot or 2 in the worst possible way and have for a very long time. Once upon a time upon inquiry one of the sellers of this air rifle and I got into a conversation about multi shot capable big bore air rifles. That person argued with me and turned out to be very anti firearm .
Even anti multi shot air rifles this guy really disliked. So that moment I said I would look at other brands from then on. It just left a bad taste in my mouth and I have never picked one up since. I hear people really like them.
The Zeus interests me because I think you could with a little effort shoot 12 gauge shot from it and get a real 12 gauge like PCP. Plus it throws giant lead that should work well on any game animal. Eventually I will get one no matter how my next hunting rifle purchase goes just to try to make it into a shotgun experiment.
I have a .50 challenger, so far I am impressed.
I’ve never had issues with the AEA challenger line of magazines, cycling rounds. I’ve shot at least 500+ pellets out of my 7.62 challenger this summer. The only issue with a magazine that I had, was actually the bolt needing to be tightened so it would not pop open on firing.
The .50 challenger solves that problem by having a lever lock button.
I’ve been shooting Hornady .495 round ball (because it’s cheap) for the time being. Waiting for my NSA slugs to show up.
Offhand, at 100’ I’ve been hitting where I’m aiming. I assume that the gun is more accurate than I am.
@@akseminole Challenger series is the best Big Bore you can buy cheap, full of features, bullpups, mag fed, external power adjustment (I noticed that in their first production some guns didn't have this which is just a air restricter I believe) the latest .50 challenger bulpup has a cheek rest that also blocks air that escapes the breech. AEA continues to improve the line and it's at s budget price.

I do love Texas! Lot of family there and used to spend summers there quite a bit. Stationed at Ft Sam in SA in army, then lived in Dallas a couple years after college. Trying to talk my wife into winter quarters on the gulf coast …. We’ll see if I win that one.

It works for me and gives me a lot of freedom. When traveling in the past, it was always a loss of time and a hassle to find a hotel when on the road, especially in a new area. Plus I never slept well because I was always worried about all my gear down in the car. My gear feels so much safer with me in the back and my 9mm tucked under my pillow, and I do sleep well. That might change later in the season as it gets cold, but for now it works!
@@americanairgunhunter Ya I've spent a month and a half on the road like that. I thought I'd get hotels about half the time but then I figured why waste the money I was so comfortable. Truck stops camp grounds and such for showers

The whole line is prettry interesting, single and dual reservoir models and all the calibers, plus the excellent tuners that are around that work on this rifle.
@@americanairgunhunter I got into air Guns in 2020. Something fun to do during Covid. I have several PCP pistols and rifles along with some break barrels. I really like my Benjamin Maurader with stock and .25 cal Avenger. Most recently bought the Diana Bandit in .22. Nice pistol for the money.
Is there a tuner you took it to or did you tune it yourself? I've wanted either a recluse or 44 big bore. The price of .357 ammo is a lot easier on the wallet than .44 but that fpe gap makes me lean towards a bigger caliber.

I dressed this one out, and brought a couple hams back to smoke, but haven’t tried it yet. Shot was 50 Yards. Thanks for offer, have a couple AEA rifles (.30 and .72) taking back to Texas next month.
Sir have you looked at the aea challenger series.. a .30 cal is literally 350 bucks and 110 fpe
I like the AEA guns a lot, have written about them in Air Gunner and Outdoor Life and will be doing more about them. But the Recluse can with a little tweaking, become a 215 fpe gun which is the minimum for javalina in Texas where this hunt took place.. Different horses for different courses.

The big bore 9mm challenger is purported to do a minimum of 300 ft lbs with 140gr slugs with 10 shots.
I’m curious to try one myself and see how it goes.

Has nothing to do with the costs. Because of my frequent business travel, I have a mountain of free nights at Marriot and Hyatt properties, and often use them when arriving at my destination. But regardless, paying for a night or two at a roadside hotel is not an issue. As mentioned, In transit I never sleep well when I use hotels because I travel with too much gear to unload the car for the night, and as a consequence leave it all in the car and am constantly waking up in my room worrying about my stuff. And to be quite honest, I'd rather sleep in my nice clean cargo space than a super 8 :) . It takes me 5 minutes to set up for a quick sleep, and 5 minutes to get ready to leave in the morning.
As to safety, I get your point, but take steps to make myself feel comfortable. First, I like to stop at the rest plazas on the toll roads. These are located in the middle of the toll roads, so get very little local traffic and they are under constant surveillance. So in these spots with my car alarm on and 9mm tucked under my pillow, I feel reasonably safe.
Another time I'll crash in the back of my vehicle is when I'm in areas so remote there are no motels, or when running and gunning for predators and I only want to stop for a couple hours. Believe me, after some of the places I've stayed in the Middle East, Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and Asia, sleeping in the back of the 4 wheeler on the way to Texas seems like high security!

Will Piatt has done a couple of my guns and is at the top of the tuner list based on my experience, and what many of my friends have shown me of his work.

But the main point to understand is that I don’t make videos for people like you….. my audience has a different attention span, if you just want to see a gun shooting, go somewhere else.
