    Growing up, I knew of course that my father had served in WWII. But as he never spoke of his experiences, I never heard much about them. My dad died in 1999, and Band of Brothers came out in 2001. I started to try to learn as much as I could about him and discovered he was also Airborne...Glider Trooper 194th Glider Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne (my avatar here on You Tube is their shoulder patch)...and his first combat experience was about 10 miles further west of Foy in a little town called Flamierge at the same time Easy Company was fighting in Foy. This series made it possible for me to understand maybe just a little of what my dad experienced as an 18/19 year old man in 1945 and I will be grateful for it till the day I die. I only wish I knew more about his experiences. Maybe it's better I don't. I don't know. Cheers for the fine reaction. :)

      The replacement who shot Grant was known as Floyd Craver, he was found guilty for murdering a British Major from the Intelligence Corps and a Wehrmacht Captain, as well as the attempted murder of Sergeant Grant (Craver also allegedly raped an Austrian girl). He was given a dishonourable discharge and sentenced to life imprisonment (but set loose shortly after returning to the States). He's been dead since July 6th 1987, after he crashed his moped into a truck in North Carolina, he was 65. Apparently he had five children, four daughters and a son.

    Band of Brothers was such an amazing show but i read there is one strange change they made. In the scene where the german colonel surrenders to Winters. Winters noted that the luger he was given had never been fired. And kept it cleaned and maintained for the rest of his life.

    • @stevedowdy1
      @stevedowdy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The book however mentions that Winters "gave officers permission to keep their side arms and allowed German military police to retain their weapons" (p.275). So presumably the scene is intended as a composite of an actual event where a German general surrendered to him personally and a separate general order he gave regarding officers' sidearms. (Either that or the screenwriters followed the book and the book was wrong - wouldn't be the only place in the show where that happens).

    The points system (I have to reread the books) was an interesting one. You got I think... three points for every month of service. 5 points for any wounds or injuries that you lived through, and 10 points for any medals, citations or any accomplishments on paper.
    I think it was noted that it was a flawed system at the time but how they managed the logistics. The military couldn't just send all of their soldiers home all at once. They needed those that were staying for full on military careers to remain in Europe or military bases overseas. With the war over, they needed troops to police or act as the new police force while Europe rebuilded or began the process of revival.

    Think of the emotional trauma these men went home with. They were gone 2 yrs or more with no contact with family except maybe some letters.
    I’m glad some things have changed for our military and they’re better taken care of. It’s the citizens who do t have a clue what their rights have cost others who fought for them to have rights.
    Our kids should be learning this in school but it’s our responsibility as parents and thankful Americans to teach them at home.

    Speirs regarded Grant as a great soldier and a good man. He cared about him a lot.
    When they found the replacement that shot him, he was attempting to rape an Austrian girl. Not only had he killed Germans during his drunk spree, but some British officers as well.
    When they brought him in, everyone was pissed and the tension was real.
    Fun fact: Colonel Sink heard about the incident and came in for a report. He spoke to Speirs alone. But after Speirs delivered the report and his testimony, Sink left. When the rest of Easy asked Speirs what happened.
    "He (Colonel Sink) nodded and said I would have shot him." -Speirs.
    Just goes to show how much respect Speirs had even from Colonel Sink. If it had gone the other way, there was a chance that Sink wouldnt have punished Speirs at all.
    But of course, to them, the war was over. They wanted no more fighting. No one wanted to kill that replacement. They all had enough of killing.

    Keep in mind not all of the German military were Nazis. They were regular army that believed they were fighting for their country. They had no part in killing Jews, minorities, gays, etc. Unfortunately they were follow orders from a madman. At the end they truly were trying to defend what was left of their country because their families were still there. So showing respect to a Colonel who was not SS was showing respect to a fellow soldier. Kind of like earlier when one of our vets was talking about how he could have possibly been friends with the people he was trying to kill, maybe hunt or fish together. They weren't evil, they were soldiers.

  • @michaelw8262

    4:17 For a little perspective on Easy Company being "the G squad," remember that they had two full years of training before ever seeing combat. Very few other soldiers, sailors, or marines had that luxury. The war in the Pacific began almost immediately after Pearl Harbor. The first major allied victory, the Battle of Midway, was two years before D-Day. The Army was fighting in North Africa 18 months before D-Day, and Italy a year before. The US had liberated multiple countries from Axis Powers control and thousands of Americans had died while Easy Company was still training in safety. And the Battle of the Bulge (in part to rescue the 101st) was by far the bloodiest battle for the US in the war, so no matter how bad Bastogne was for them, I'm sure lots of other soldiers felt like all Airborne soldiers were pampered, spoiled, over-trained, and overpaid.

    • @natskivna
      @natskivna 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta respond to this. The VAST, VAST majority of men who served in WWII were not combat veterans. Only about 35% of US Army soldiers were considered "front line" troops..the rest were support (artillery, rear echelon, cooks, truck drivers, staff officers, etc). Not to mention the Army Air Force, Navy, Merchant Marine, who saw little or no combat. This fact ALONE refutes your assertion they were mostly "in safety". Certainly not when compared to most of the 16 million who served in the US in WWII. They were part of the 35% of the army that actually fought. The other 65% mostly didn't.
      And while all areas of the United States Army performed admirably in WWII, it's safe to say that Airborne units saw MORE than their fair share of combat. In many instances, some of the highest unit casualty percentages in the US Army in WWII belonged to Airborne units. The 17th for example...one of its regiments took FIFTY PERCENT casualties in it's first 3 days of fighting in the Bulge.
      Yes, airborne units trained longer because they had to...they were doing things other units couldn't. And they were considered "elite" so yes they got more training. To state they were somehow "spoiled" is a slur and unnecessary to say the least.

    • @michaelw8262
      @michaelw8262 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@natskivna I'm not denigrating the airborne, but how many Infantrymen probably thought they would be "elite" with an extra ~15 months of training? Christmas 1944 in Belgium was just as cold for the cavalry and infantry units (plus engineers and all the rest), and all American forces combined suffered about 40% casualties in the Battle of the Bulge. Heck, fighter pilots only had nine months of training beyond basic, so about a year total. My point is simply that if I was one of the men landing on the beach on D-Day instead of jumping in, or breaking through the German lines in the Battle of the Bulge instead of holding the ever-shrinking Allied territory, I might be inclined to think the men next to me were every bit as good of soldiers as the 101st.

    • @natskivna
      @natskivna 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelw8262 Who said they weren't every bit as good? I don't recall ANYONE making that statement.
      On the other hand, YOU made the assertion that the men of Easy (and by extension all airborne) were thought of as "spoiled". I'm not sure what the point was to make such an assertion or even how you feel qualified to make such a statement? You stating you didn't mean to denigrate the airborne while at the same time stating "lots of other soldiers felt like all Airborne soldiers were pampered, spoiled, over-trained, and overpaid" sure sounded denigrating to me.
      Rather than cast aspersions about airborne units, perhaps telling the story of the bravery of these other units would be a better choice if you feel they've been slighted in some way?
      p.s. One of the units that as you said was "breaking through the German lines in the Battle of the Bulge" WAS airborne...the 17th which was protecting Patton's left flank as he counterattacked into the southern front of the Bulge...one of THREE divisions of airborne involved in that battle.

    • @iammanofnature7227
      @iammanofnature7227 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In addition to the 101st there were other units in Bastogne, including Combat Command-B of the 10th Armored Division which repeatedly engaged German armor, destroying dozens German tanks and other armored vehicles, and kept it from rolling over and through the lightly armed 101st. In addition, there were three segregated field artillery Battalions, 333rd, 969th, and 578th, also present in Bastogne. The 333rd had been badly mauled in earlier actions and 11 of its men had been tortured and killed in the Wereth 11 Massacre.
      On a side note, I should add that some other things shown in Band of Brothers are not historically accurate. For instance:
      1) The liberation of *Kaufering IV* as shown in episode 9 is almost entirely fictitious. The camp was actually found and liberated by the 12th Armored Division on April 27, 1945 with only a handful prisoners found alive and about 500 bodies, but the producers thought in would be more dramatic to have Easy Company liberate the camp.
      2) The liberation of Berchtesgaden and The Obersalzberg as shown in episode 10. According to the U.S. Army both towns were actually liberated by the 3rd Infantry Division on May 4, 1945.
