House of the Rising Sun was the first "Rock" song I learned on my guitar in another life in 9th grade. A friend gave me free lessons. The first question he asked me was what do you want to learn? I told him Rock.
If I could still play guitar, this is definitely on top of the list 'to learn'
I've retaight myself how to play, though this song is not really doable...

I think you succeeded very well, in making your version haunting, sad and despairing. That is exactly what the song is about, whether the cause of the despair is gambling, alcohol or prostitution does not matter so much as the feeling of sadness at the situation.
The song has been done by many greats including Leadbelly, Dylan, Joan Baez and The Animals. It is one of my favorites, and there is no 'best' version; all the versions bring a new perspective. Thank you so much for yours.

Back when I was young and the dinosaurs roamed the earth, our school district had a summer program where kids, 10-14, would go the High School and either be in a swimming class or choir. They split the group in two, so for 4 weeks you swam and 4 weeks you were choir.
This is the song they we learned in choir, which at the time, was pretty progressive and we thought we were cool :)

Wow, Camille and Kennerly, that was SO awesome! "House of the Rising Sun" is a song that is both sad and beautiful, and carries a big warning. It tells of a life full of mistakes and wrong decisions. It's too late to chance anything now, but there is this song, as a warning to the next generation to make it better, to not repeat the old mistakes. So this song is more to date than we would think. From this background, the cemetery you chose as location for this video makes total sense.

Memories. I auditioned at my Seventh-day Adventist high school, by playing this song in the 1960s. I was taken aside by one of my teachers and he told me that the House of the Rising Sun was a whorehouse and they didn’t want me singing about it for their program. I was proud of my rendition but it was cast aside. Thank you for your beautiful rendition of this song. My wife was a twin, and she passed away two years ago. It brings a tear to my eye watching the two of you, who seem so happy in your talent and shared projects. I wish for you happiness for all of your lives. You make my heart sing for my lost love of my life whenever I watch one of your videos. Thank you!!!

This is a *very* old folk song and the original writer and history is actually lost to time. It was sung by either the male or the female perspective and is generally considered a cautionary tale about wasting one's life. It is much longer (more verses) than the shorter version made popular by the animals but definitely deserves to be heard. Teachers should encourage passions and talents and learning/research and not have knee-jerk reactions to be crushers of dreams. I had a guitar in my dorm room and the dean of boys took it away from me numerous times for playing inappropriate music, like Beatles songs, etc. We were not allowed to have radios (we were so far from any city that radios didn't work very well anyway), or record players, for most of my time there. When they allowed record players my senior year, every record a student had in his room had to be passed by the faculty. We of course snuck records on campus. (The campus was 17 miles from the nearest town.) I was in the school choir and the small school singing group the Choraleers, because I loved music. But I was out of sync with the ideals of the school. It is a beautiful thing that you were encouraged to pursue your music, and even more beautiful, the way you express your muse. Thank you! I live all alone these days, and so hugs are priceless I assure you. 🙂

As you said already this is an old spiritual that predates the known version by maybe 100 years. Your version was perfectly in spirit, Haunting, Sad, but Strong and Lifting. Those would be the words I would describe this song as. Lilting for you two, forceful for the Animals.

First time I ever heard this song - can't remember who the artist was but it was a female Country singer. Yeah, the Animals' version is most well known these days but it's a lot older than that. I've tried looking for the original lyrics but there are so many variations I can never be sure which is original.
The tempo feels a little odd on this version, but the voice is hauntingly appropriate and the overall sound is just amazing. And the visual imagery in the video is haunting as well. Very well done indeed.

Dave Van Ronk's adaption of Leadbelly's "Rising Son Blues" was borrowed by Bob Dylan, then electrified by the British 'Animals' group, featuring Alan Price's compelling keyboard, and they were all difficult to avoid -- even for masterful performers like Joan Baez.
I wrote the same thing without knowing you'd already done it. But I forgot the Leadbelly connection.
