I think a lot of people get confused when starting out with Gaia GPS, because waypoints have no meaning in a creating a route. That is simply not what one expects. Beginners expect waypoints to work the way the dots in a route do, but waypoints in Gaia GPS are "just" user info.
looks like the software has changed a bit in the meantime: no longer need to "snap" the route to the existing trail, the cursor as you move it automatically follows the existing trail
You can still click and drag on the map to move it around while creating a route. Try it out and let Support know if you have any issues: help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

If you're setting up a route for a loop trail, it won't let you pick the end point as the same spot you started on, unless I am doing something wrong?
I was hoping the tutorial is on the smartphone app itself.
Hi , after you have saved the route, how do you go back and edit crop? Thanks

How do you move the map around while tracing the route? (on a Mac).

How to turn off a tracking map, once you stop? It’s sucking my battery.
Make sure you finish your track with the steps here: help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/360048651574-Record-and-Resume-Tracks
It doesn't seem the answer below is what you need. The answer is actually to "save" the route to end the tracking.
