The best way to start the xr150 is to put the choke all the way up and when you press the ignition give it gas and hold it for about 10 seconds, after that put it to half choke right after letting go of the throttle to let it idle. Every foam filter I have purchased all list that their flame retardant, so the prefire plate is pretty pointless. Not to mention the only time I've ever had prefire is when I've drowned the bike with gasoline/starter fluid or it was running WAY too rich through the jets.
As someone who currently has 7 bikes in my stable, from Harley's down to my little Honda C70, none of my bikes have that screen. If any bike would need it, it would be my 2004 KTM 450EXC, never had an issue. Just picked up a 2025 XR150, will be doing some of the mods, just for a little more pep.
@@DustySteel it is a 2024, typo. Already modified the exhaust and air box. When my Jets come in I will reject the carburetor and reset the idle. The rest is all comfort stuff. Grip heaters, bar risers, Rokform mount, (we use them on Harley's) pigtail for trickle charger and charge phone. Also a plug in kit for my electric riding gear in cold weather. I have written in 20° weather with no issues going over 70 mph. Putting on brush guards with signals in them. Better foot pegs, this will be almost exclusively dirt roads. Everything is on order.
I bought xr150 for my daughter for her first learner's. I had a klx250. But gonna sell it and get the xr150. The only drawback of the xr150 was starting and idle. Now I can easily fix that. I love the seat, and can go for hours!
Pretty sure someone in the comments might of already said it, and I don't know if Burch will see this comment, but the snorkel that you said you have no idea what it does besides limit airflow says it's function in the name.. "Snorkel", it's designed to keep water at bay hence the flared ends of the intake tubes on it, Honda has no idea what people are going to do with these bikes, especially when cleaning with a pressure washer, so they try to mitigate any and all potential for water to unintentionally enter the airbox, all manufacturers do this to some extent.
Excellent video. You are learning as you go and that is the best way. I am glad the re-jetting went smoothly. I am also glad it’s not surging at 40 miles per hour. My first TW200 would do that. Again excellent vid.
Nice, you should raise the needle one notch to enrich the middle throttle range too! The pilot jet is bottom, idle, and the main jet is 3/4 throttle and WOT. The needle (acting as an adjustable valve in the atomizer) blends them together.
Your idea to remove the header to get the bowl off was genius. I changed the pilot to 38 and the main to 115. I also turned up the idle screw a quarter turn. I did not mess with the air box or the exhaust (it was too loud without the spark arrestor). Cold start today was perfect at 50 deg F., 600 ft elevation. Half choke started right up with no priming. 15 seconds later choke off had perfect idle. Top speed was still 57 mph but I am 215 lbs. I may try a different front sprocket next. Thanks
I agree that on these small engines the additional power potential from things like exhaust is minimal to the point of not being worth the trade off for the additional noise of the aftermarket exhaust much less the added expense. As these are delivered from the factory to get a carbureted engine to pass current U.S.A. EPA regulations they have to be super lean out of the box and fattening up the jet sizes a little will make the bike much more responsive and user friendly such as starting and rideability if done correctly. So many buy these small cc bikes and dump tons of dollars in them adding big bore kits, upping compression, cams, head porting trying to make them perform in a manner they were never designed for hence decreasing reliability and increasing the engines operating temps which then call for adding oil coolers and the like. Buy one of these, leave it virtually stock with the exception of minor low-cost improvements and enjoy it for what it was designed for, a small cheap gateway into a dual sport or a city commuter bike that is cheap to buy, insure and operate. If you want a lot more power buy a something like a 300cc bike that will better meet those goals.
The jetting (needle adjustment also) will surly help all the way around. The pipe & slip-on with jetting will also be a small but noticeable positive. Honda put the fuel petcock with catch bowl on for two reasons. The fuel valve is supposed to "off" when you park the bike because the weight of the fuel in the tank is always pushing on that float needle & seat. If for any number of reasons fuel were to slowly trickle by the float seat & needle, the fuel will flow either to the carb overflow tube or worse into the engine, cylinder past the piston rings and into the engine where it will dilute the motor oil which is bad over time. People often just forget this, but it does happen and repeated over time is bad. The bowl below the fuel valve is to catch water and sediment from getting to the carburetor and crating problems there. You unscrew the bowl and empty it out taking note of what comes out. Over time you will see the see what comes out as the seasons and miles go by. All this information and much more used to come in the owner's manual. Hopefully new bikes will continue to provide these manuals even though people seem to be proud to say they never read them. As mechanics will often tell people "that problem could have been avoided if you read the owner's manual. That screen you took out of the airbox is a flame arrestor to stop your air filter from catching fire if engine backfires. The black baffle was designed to bring in air from that area but help redirect hot air that flows over the engine from going right into the air intake, it also helps lower the intake sound. Taking those things out of the intake does nothing to help and may even hurt power, ether way the amount it could help any power issues would not be measurable. Although even a little hot air would a be measurable negative. So often riders will believe they are getting more power from doing things that just make the engine louder, in truth it's not a way to judge performance. Discounting the noise and feeling the responsiveness of carb jetting is a better way.
I had this bike a few years ago, and re jetting is the best thing you can do to it. They come stupidly lean and as you experienced, after re jetting works much much better
I did this exact technique to change the jetting after I watch this video and by far the superior technique. That’s if you have small enough tools lol thank you bro
9:51 💯 correct. It's the same concept for the Navi too. It made a huge difference! And once you've figured out your bikes jets. That's it. It's set forever unless you modify the intake or exhaust again
Mid pipe removal was a great idea. One suggestion from tough experience. When you get a chance, replace the carb float bowl screws with allen head screws. I had a DR650 where I basically had to chisel the philip head screws off float bowl. Plus you can use a L shaped wrench to get the allen bolts off/on in the future.
As an experiment reinstall that three hole snorkel and see if there’s any change in performance. I got a feeling that snorkel may help because the way it’s contoured as it may help straighten out the air flow and reduce turbulence into the air box. AnyWho… I’m just curious and that would be something easy and quick to do. Houston, Tx
Thanks man I did all of your mods and I feel the bike is a little more torquier, little more throttle response now. The jets were super easy to do thanks to your method.
I did this to my xr150l and in first gear I can pop a wheelie ..way more torque on the low end and I also just did the crank case breather and it feels like that gave me more top end torque
That’s for replying it means a lot coming from someone as big as you. Yea I also did smoked lights and a led head light and new tires running lights you should look into that
I do have xr150 here in Ph and I modified the carburettor to a PE26 round slide and I took off the whole airbox/filter. And its fun to ride, easy to reach 120kph in a wide open throttle. I also delete the AIS.
The snorkel is to smooth out and speed up the air flow while reducing the suction sound. While giving the bike a user friendly and smoother power band.🤔🤔🤔
The snorkel is there so it’s a clean way to get air before the filter when driving off road so no water gets sucked in other than that yes restrictions
The snorkel is sound dampening and increases air speed. When I removed mine it ran lean. Perhaps jetting would solve the problem but I didn’t like the induction sound so it’s back on
Where is the fuel mixture screw on this carburetor I can't find any specs on it? Bike takes forever to warm up in 70 degree F temps. Looking to perhaps richen the mixture up so it starts without full choke on a warm day ..thanks

Keep in mind these are machines that I maintain and take care of myself, I HAVE seen a foam filter melt apart on an old bike, I mean like OLD OLD, early 1990s bike that was sitting outside for 10 years I was looking into one time. I live in PH and have had the XR150 since 2017. Yes it has cold idle problems and stalling trouble. Like as if the engine locks up for a second. The carbs on these bikes are crap. Don't even have a fuel/air mix adjust. I find when i turn up my idle when cold it gets to be to high when the engine gets warm. It's a very inexpensive bike i guess you can't ask for much. I'm ready for something better. It did me well for 7 years as an everyday driver.
I tried doing this, there is a third jet type of nozzle that has a spring in it which I confused with the pilot jet and took it out. Spring flew out but I put everything back together and now its acting out. Any ideas if that third jet/nozzle needs adjustment?
I was looking into a LKX300 but am deciding on the CRF250F instead and getting a street conversion mod through the DirtLegal website. Bike is 22 pounds lighter stock, has less crap to break like a waterpump, less maintenance from no coolant, no rads to get punctured while riding off road, much larger aftermarket support with a BBK being on my to-do list that will bump the displacement to 365, you don't HAVE to add an oil cooler even with the BBK but I will just for peace of mind for oil temps.

I'm surprised that when you popped off the muffler and went to do both the air box -n- carb, that you didn't go ahead & port the engine? As far as you could w/ a dremmel or other tools? Hell, IDKnow what it gives ya but if I get to the point you did here, porting both sides of the engine is a standard practice for the iron heads out there. Would it do anything for you? It can not hurt to open up the volume of intake & exhaust of any engine. I'm not saying you missed it, I only just thought of it as I heard you speak as the video flashed that part up. Light Bulb went off in my head. I'll give you the credit for that, thanks very much. You still got this bike? peace
Great vid, love it. Let me ask about your recording. When you have dialogue and are driving, do you record directly or do you do that in post and add the audio later? Personally, I use a bluetooth lav mic in my helmet and I get a fair bit of background noise, so I am wondering about your set up. It is good audio, see.
I recently went down a rabbit hole of looking into swapping this entire motor with a $300 Lifan CG250-style engine. The mounting holes look correctly spaced, and it provides a good bit more horsepower AND a kickstart. Might make for a neat wheelie machine.
Good job. See, carbs aren't nearly the devil people make them out to be. :) I suspected you should have gone to the next size pilot but I didn't hear any popping on decel in the video. If it starts to crop up as the weather gets hotter and dryer, there is always the option. I think there is room for a slightly bigger main also. You opened up the air flow quite a bit. If you go back in to the carb for the pilot change, throw a main in there that is one or two sizes up to see what happens. You can try a sparkplug burn color check but unless they are done correctly, they can give false readings. The airbox screen was a backfire spark preventer. In the event of a backfire, a spark could be pushed up into the air filter causing it to catch fire. There were a lot of burned up bikes back in the day till those screens were introduced. Last, your jet kit seemed to work out just fine. I always recommend keihin brand jets with the star logo as I tried an off brand once that was waaay too lean on a two stroke dirtbike. You know what you are getting with keihin but your bike seems to run well.
Solid input dude, thanks! It seems to be running great, but I still may try a 115 jet and maybe a bigger pilot just to see how it does. After seeing how easy this was it wouldn’t hurt to try 🤘🏻
Plug checks aren't as reliable now that fuel almost universally E10. You'll get a white strap and the tan isn't as defined. Ditto on the jets. Some manufacturers use a different number system. I believe dynojet has their own setup of sizes.
I will say, the metal screen is good to have in the event of a backfire. It prevents the filter from catching fire. But honestly, on a 150 I seriously don't see that happening.

Advise, ALWAYS, ALWAYS place a "WHITE" hand towel and place underneath the carberator so you dont loose any screws or in your case, "JETs". !!!!!!!!! Give it a quick squrit of carberator before you button things up bro. 😊
The size of that air filter and scoops is much larger than the air pick up inside and its such a small engine, i don't think that will do anything to help power.
Your intake mods dont do anything. That engine doesnt suck enough air to be affected by the snorkel removal. Most of your performance gains come from taking the stock muffler off, which has a catalytic converter built in. After market exhausts dont have this.
I agree that the aftermarket exhaust has more of a performance benefit than the air box mods, but to say the air box mods “don’t do anything” is just not true. As minimal as the benefits may be for an engine this small, the benefits are still there. And even if it actually “didn’t do anything”…it’s free. So who cares? 😂
Per EPA certification, the 150L does not have a cat. Even still, motorcycles use a larger substrate orifice size for flow. For cars I believe the standard is 1PSI at 2500RPM, so the effect is minimal. However, the engine IS choked by the intake by the carb and port size. The airbox volume on it's own is larger than the cylinder can pull in, times two it seems.
Looks good for now, but I trust the Honda engineers and if they put things on the bike they probably are needed. But if you stay on pavement forever maybe not.
@@tristan6509 there are so many factors to be considered here for example will the brakes handle the increase in engine power? Will they do a good job in stopping it
@@diegomuuo929 have you seriously never seen someone install a big bore kit on a motorcycle? people have been doing this long before the internet even existed. also disc brake upgrades are very cheap, any machine shop can create an adapter and you can even get rear disc brake conversion kits. the XR150L has been popular in southeast asia and latin america long before it was sold in the US. you can find plenty of aftermarket mods for it.
I use an aluminum fuel bottle to catch the Navi's gas when I drain the carb. There should be a rubber hose that the fuel drains out of. I catch it instead of letting it hit the pavement but each their own. Thought that would be helpful going forward.

@@michaelconran5252what mods are you considering doing?
@@DustySteel it is a 2024, typo. Already modified the exhaust and air box. When my Jets come in I will reject the carburetor and reset the idle. The rest is all comfort stuff. Grip heaters, bar risers, Rokform mount, (we use them on Harley's) pigtail for trickle charger and charge phone. Also a plug in kit for my electric riding gear in cold weather. I have written in 20° weather with no issues going over 70 mph. Putting on brush guards with signals in them. Better foot pegs, this will be almost exclusively dirt roads. Everything is on order.
@@michaelconran5252 you can get your bike over 70mph? Are you at sea level?
I bought xr150 for my daughter for her first learner's. I had a klx250. But gonna sell it and get the xr150. The only drawback of the xr150 was starting and idle. Now I can easily fix that. I love the seat, and can go for hours!
I’m gonna do this with my carb but I was planning on using the 115 jet… I’m glad to see it really helps… keep up the great work!!!
How do you do that?
My needle has only one setting
@@stuarthipkins8336 use a very small washer to raise the needle
For cold start you do not use choke ? Open close? Why not use it ?
I did this exact technique to change the jetting after I watch this video and by far the superior technique. That’s if you have small enough tools lol thank you bro
Snorkel keeps rain out put a weep screen on filter.
Carburetor tuning can be done with spark plug color if you don’t have access to a dyno.
I did the exact same change on my XR150L, runs smooth!. Is more responsive. Great way to add power!
Also Harbor Freight sells a right angle screwdriver for $3 perfect for the carb job.
I did this to my xr150l and in first gear I can pop a wheelie ..way more torque on the low end and I also just did the crank case breather and it feels like that gave me more top end torque
Yea dude I love seeing the improvements you can get from such small changes! 🙌🏻🤘🏻
That’s for replying it means a lot coming from someone as big as you.
Yea I also did smoked lights and a led head light and new tires running lights you should look into that
Also r u having oil consumption problems? I am
Also change ur mirrors and bars
It makes the ride way better
And I also did a license plate delete makes bike look way cleaner

Perhaps jetting would solve the problem but I didn’t like the induction sound so it’s back on
Does changing the jets make a difference without putting slipon on?
Where is the fuel mixture screw on this carburetor I can't find any specs on it? Bike takes forever to warm up in 70 degree F temps. Looking to perhaps richen the mixture up so it starts without full choke on a warm day

Adjust the air fuel screw, it helps with start up and idle.

@@scotteger6271 I've been riding since I was 6 (28 now), have raced multiple motorcross tournaments, have owned 5 different dirtbikes and 3 four wheelers that all used foam filters, and not ONCE have I ever had a filter disintegrate in the way you and Kalaharimine are worried about. Keep in mind these are machines that I maintain and take care of myself, I HAVE seen a foam filter melt apart on an old bike, I mean like OLD OLD, early 1990s bike that was sitting outside for 10 years I was looking into one time. As long as you maintain your filter to the absolute most bare minimum standard, it will NEVER fall apart on you and get sucked into the motor as you would catch any deterioration or seam fraying well before it got to that point, they don't just "break up" without giving AMPLE warning beforehand.

The metal screen is a safety feature incase of a backfire
I’ll recommend to also change the air filter for one with a metal screen like the K&N style.
K&N might actually give you more performance on the road but is proven to allow more dirt through. Not recommended for off-road use, highway only.

I've just gotta know: what handguards are those, Burch?
Honda oem I have them on mine
Could drill a big enough
Hole in screen and put a hook in there or something stuck in there to pull it out with
I tried doing this, there is a third jet type of nozzle that has a spring in it which I confused with the pilot jet and took it out. Spring flew out but I put everything back together and now its acting out. Any ideas if that third jet/nozzle needs adjustment?
I failed to put back in the accelerator nozzle 😅
Already got a klx 300. But the xr150 still sounds like a good buy. Would make an awesome in town / tractor of a trail bike

Wat Up Burch-Life.... I'm back to watch your little video again.... go figure. I'm surprised that when you popped off the muffler and

Hell, IDKnow what it gives ya but if I get to the point you did here, porting both sides of the engine is a standard practice for the
iron heads out there. Would it do anything for you? It can not hurt to open up the volume of intake & exhaust of any engine. I'm
not saying you missed it, I only just thought of it as I heard you speak as the video flashed that part up. Light Bulb went off in
my head. I'll give you the credit for that, thanks very much. You still got this bike? peace

Great video Burch !!! 🤙🏽
En la Argentina Honda fabrica esta moto, npero aquí la hacen con arranque dual: eléctrico y a palanca
I’d be shocked if that happened. And if it does…well I guess that’s why we have full coverage insurance 🤷🏼♂️😂
I’d give that a 1/1,000,000,000 likelihood

The airbox volume on it's own is larger than the cylinder can pull in, times two it seems.
i swear nobody takes the time to read the owners manual with their bikes. mine starts just fine everytime. the choke works as it should
I’m glad yours worked just fine per the manual’s instructions…mine didn’t. Now it does.
Lmao a fuel line, a vent, and a drain hose are just beyond comprehension 😅
