    VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
The Indian Premier League is by far one of the most remarkable achievements in the Indian sports industry!! But while most of us only know it as the iconic summer time sports sensation very few of us know about the business intricacies of IPL that makes it a capitalistic miracle for the economy of India!!
and the most astonishing thing about IPL is that even during the pandemic, while companies were struggling and incurring losses, in the 2020 season, inspite of Ticket sales hitting rock bottom due to covid, inspite of VIVO retracting from its title sponsorship, BCCI’s revenue from IPL shot up by almost 100% from 2200cr 2019 to 4000cr in the 2020 season. and Today the brand value of IPL stands at an insane mark of 4.7 Billion dollars which is almost 35,900 Crores!! and If you compare the broadcasting rights of IPL at the world level, as of 2020 while NBA stood at 2.1 Millon dollars, Bundesliga stood at 3.9 Million dollars where as the Indian Premier league stood at way aheaddd 8.5 million dollars!!

There are even more companies in the IPL ecosysytem.. Brands like Dominos, Pepsico who sell products at 30-40% markup in the stadiums, Ola/Uber ferrying spectators to and fro at surge prices when the match ends at midnight, swiggy/zomato bcoz the trend nowadays is to have friends come over and watch the match together, Jio/Airtel/Tata Sky to cater to crores of people watching the match on TV/mobile everyday... Hi Ganesh, if you know ICL Indian Cricket League (idea 💡) was first concieved by Subhash Chandra of Zee and Kapil Dev. But, it did not succeed as it was lacking the glamor or so to say right timing.
LM knew and came up with the most deadly cocktail
I,e. Mixing of Cricket n Bollywood for which most Indians are mad/crazy about..
Thus, it became a success story

This per match revenue comparison is pretty pointless. An IPL match goes for more than 3 hrs with ads every 2-4 mins. A 90 mins bundesliga or 48 mins NBA game get some ads only during half/quarter time.
Also their main revenue is through the expensive streaming subscription which is pretty negligible when it comes to IPL.

Too much of credit is being given to Lalit Modi for IPL. In fact, it was Subhas Chandra, owner of Zee company, who had started similar tournaments but BCCI, with all its might, destroyed Subhash Chandra tournament and started IPL. IPL is nothing but copy and paste of league cricket which was started by Subhas Chandra.

Great Insights team! However one of the core stimulus for the inception of IPL was the creation of ICL by Zee. Back then, the laws were not clear about franchise cricket and Mr.SubhashChandra of Zee got this opportunity to start Indian Cricket League which awakened the BCCI out of a deep slumber. The way BCCI used its power and invested heavily in IPL could be an another Business lesson on how one can kill the competition.

One other noteworthy point, is that advertisements are not the only way broadcasters or streaming platforms make money. They also get money through viewers. For Eg: most matches gather 1Cr+ viewers via just Hotstar, and are likely to have paid subscription fees. TV viewers also end up paying money for channels like Sony Max or Star Sports HD.

The biggest reason behind the genesis of the IPL was the ICL.
Subhash Chandra from Zee was the first mover, but BCCI with its fast response ensured that no active Indian players participate in it.
The first ICL season had done decent business without any world class grounds or coverage. BCCI knew that they just had to use all their strengths, which they did.
A great example of why first mover advantage isn't everything.

They may change the IPL format similar to Foot ball games. 2 sessions. First Session is 10 overs. 2nd session is again 10 overs. Both teams should bat one after another in the first session and again in the next session. and see what happens. At end it is game.

Ganesh, this parallel cricket league was originally conceived by zee tv and launched as ICL, BCCI waged an all out war against this league by banning the players involved in ICL from international cricket, as far as i remember players like shane bond received life time ban and kapil dev too had to face the music for association with ICL. It was after this BCCI decided to launch it's own league.

Broadcasting rights per match is not the correct benchmark. Bundesliga and NBA have way too many matches so the per match cost will have to come down logically. Also, Bundesliga isn't the best football league in the world. If comparison is to be done, it should be done either with Barclays Premier League or the UEFA Champions League

The original idea and concept was brought by Zee's Subhash Chandra and Kapil Dev in the form of ICL. It was pretty successful and had good prize money even with Zee alone as a big sponsor.
BCCI saw this and almost immediately thought of stealing it. They have contract with majority of the stadiums in the country. They didn't support ICL and brought out IPL the next year.
So a dialogue from movie Iron man is apt: if you have an Idea, it is not necessary that it belongs to you.

  • @KateShubham

..and yet, BCCI doesn't even pay a penny as tax to indian government!
It's only we employees who are responsible for carrying burden of taxes! India can benifit hugely in terms infrastructure development if ipl is taxed, even at lower rates!

    • @KateShubham

Every commercial activity in india is taxed! IPL is one of the biggest commercial activities in terms financial scale. Yet, IPL is not taxed.
If u nd me start a business, we will have to pay taxes, but if BCCI starts a business, it smartly exempts itself. Why so..?
