The easiest way to learn long range shooting believe it or not is with a 22lr. Nice thing is you can learn long range shooting at shorter ranges. A 22 at 200 has roughly the same corrections as a 6.5 at 800-900 yards. And you don’t go broke practicing.

My Vote is for the Gas Gun: AR15/AR10. If you need a bigger cartridge then go bolt. In my experience seeing your shot is more of a recoil vs gun weight thing. Being able to stay focused on target then a quick follow up is an advantage of the gas gun. Most of the time, you can replace worn out AR parts yourself.

I like the versatility and ability to switch between 6.5 CM and .308. I've felt tempted to pick up a decent AR-10 for a while. It comes in waves, but every time, I'm glad I went with the bolt gun to really hone fundamentals.

308 is very forgiving in your loads for accuracy nodes. You may run into problems if you're running the same loads between two different rifles though.
The two projectiles I've had the best results with at range have been 155 grain Scenars loaded to 3k fps, and 168 grain TMKs loaded to about 2750. The 168s generally hold well til about 950-1k.
I'd recommend you look at .243 Win or 6mm Creedmoor for reloading, though (you can neck down the .308 to a .243 Win if you already have 308 brass)
You'll have MUCH less drop, lower recoil, and your rounds hang on to more energy at range. You'll find they perform better than .264/6.5mm rounds, too. Especially when you start getting up to 1-7.5 to 1-8 twist barrels moving 103-115gr projectiles.
Your flight time is shorter, and your windage adjustment will be smaller too.
6mm projectiles in closer ranges actually perform very well ballistically, too. I run 100 grain soft points in my .243 AR10 as a general purpose round, and with proper shot placement, it's anchored everything I've ever hit with it.

Great video! I've been shooting long range for about 3 years now, and just recently started getting into PRS. The bolt gun has every advantage except for faster fire rate/follow up shots and higher capacity. The bolt gun is more accurate, typically gets higher velocity, is easier to learn on, and is typically more reliable since there's less moving parts. Decide the philosophy of use of that gun, and then build around that.

    • @userJohnSmith
      @userJohnSmith 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

The learning curve on gas guns is definitely higher and the velocity cost is real, otherwise I would dispute some of that. For about 1.8k with scope and brass I managed to build a .3 minute (5 shot) .284WIN in an AR 308 so frame. My dad's ultra custom bolt was more than double and shoots the same. It was harder for me to get there (in fairness he's got a tuner too), but I did figure it out.

Another thing to think about is the body mechanics that the AR pattern will not adapt to. The bolt gun with a Fiberglass stock can be upgraded with a 4 way adustable cheekrest to allow the shooters eye to be perfectly aligned with the scope withouting having to crank your head around the buffer tube.
Additionally: Savage makes left-handed Match rifles that have been proven to shoot under 1 moa.

These days I shoot my .223 AR-15A2 in NRA governed Long Range Competition. This is iron sight prone sling supported competition and although I am an American High Power Rifleman Award Winner in Long-Range I can barely produce 94% scores with the AR. But I like this sort of shooting because it inspires marksmanship development like no other competition. At any rate, all novice shooters here would be smart to try out this competition as it will demand you learn everything important to good shooting, which you can use in less demanding shooting games to win in those games.

Interesting thoughts. I thought I learned long range precision faster when I went to a gas gun. My friend's 6.5 CM just felt like easy mode. When I made my own long range gas gun, I had to figure out why it wasn't as easy. Simple things like just the setup of the gun (length of pull, scope height, etc) I learned are REALLY important to getting a repeatable shooting setup.

I guess that the lock time in a semiautomatic is then noticeably longer than a bolt action rifle... In reading about some very special sniper rifles, they actually have electronic firing system, so that there is only microseconds of delay from trigger to primer fire, and, I imagine, there is zero trigger "break", unless they added it in for feedback, but any "feedback" before the bullet leaves the barrel is, potentially, "bad"...
Interesting also about maintaining the sight picture on the bolt action, being able to see the "splash", probably a very good thing in action, even if your spotter is calling the shots.

  • @JacksonMalcolm

Its interesting to hear about having a hard time seeing the flight/trace/impact of the gas gun being worse than the bolt gun. I think a big part of that is the equipment. I have light ARs that are indeed hard to keep the target in the scope and I have bolt guns with the same problem due to weight, caliber and recoil control such as a muzzle brake. My .223 Accurized AR though doenst come off target any more than my 6GT bolt gun. I understand the caliber difference there, but I guarantee if you put my GA PPR in 6GT next to Robs Saint, also in 6GT, neither is coming off the target at all as long as the support is comparable. The only real difference I personally see is the bolt gun is a bit more stable in some positions, mostly when using a center bag on a wall or barricade.

Free-floated ARs have some of the highest accuracy potential out there. The problem with ARs isn't that they aren't accurate, if they're built right. Its that you're limited to a mini action... or short action cartridge, if you go with the AR10.
6.5 Creedmoor, as much as I absolutely loathe the round because its a slower .260 Remington... is a fantastic starting point for anyone wanting an off the shelf "long range" AR10.
Personally, I'd recommend stepping down to 6mm Creedmoor if you reload, or .243 Winchester if you don't. The 6mm projectiles will give you much better results, especially in the 103-115 grain range of projectiles. Barrel length is key, though. If you want to step out past 1k, you'll need to start looking at 24" barrels. Preferably stainless, and preferably HBAR or heavier.
X-Caliber will turn you a 28" barrel, in stainless steel, chambered in whichever round you want. Itll run you around $450-600+ depending on what profile, length and finish you want.
When you start moving into longer action cartridges, though, you're able to put WAY more energy down range. Thats where your ARs are going to fall flat.
Side note on recoil, a 6mm CM/.243 win AR10 tuned properly will give you such little recoil that you can actively watch your vapor trail through the recoil impulse if you're doing your part as a shooter.

    • @BuckF0eJiden
      @BuckF0eJiden 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

An AR15 with a longer barrel (24"+) chambered in 6mm ARC will give you super low recoil, but you'll really need to invest in your bolt and extractor to handle the chamber pressures you'd load to in a bolt gun. A .243 Win will give you better results for your budget, but if money isn't an option for you, build a longer barrel 6ARC, and stay the hell away from carbon fiber barrels.

Im have only done a limited amount of long range shooting (mainly bc im broke 😂) but i do a lot of hunting. I switched over to gas guns this year mainly due to the fact that my favorite hunting spot is in the largest population of grizzlies in the lower 48, and i want quick shots in case i get charged. What im trying to say is while this bolt vs gas gun debate can go either way for precision bench shooting, in practical scenarios gas guns win out every time.

Gassers can be almost as precise as bolt guns to the point it’s largely irrelevant. But there’s some things about gas guns that cause problems with precision once you get out of the prone, the biggest thing is lock time. The significantly longer lock time means more time from when the hammer is released and the powder is ignited. This is the big reason in the PRS and sniper community you don’t see gassers replacing bolts except for closer in stuff, there’s also the issue of what calibers you can get in gassers.

Anyway, just things to know about...

@bruiserindustriesllc I think they're better than the LMT and seekins that were mentioned. My sr25 is more accurate and a softer shooter than my MARS H. I personally haven't handled a AR10 that's better

@@fairmont706 and I’m glad you have a good one. I see them almost every class do nothing worth more than what their retail should be while being very proprietary with lack luster customer service after the sale. If it’s what floats your boat and you get good performance out of it. That is bad ass and I wish you years of good use. I won’t push people to spend KAC money over other things on the market. It’s a inflated demand based pricing off nothing but limited supply and hype. There is a reason and lots of documentation why almost nobody runs sr25’s anymore and tier 1 units went elsewhere.

    6 grand? Lmao.
A good shooter can easily take a $500 rifle like a howa 1500, savage 110, tika t3 lite, etc and a $300 swfa scope and outperform most anyone with a $6k set up. You cant buy ability, but you can smear the difference a little...
One of my fondest memories as a kid was outshooting a dude with an accuracy intl with a jld ptr91 with the goofy 4x german hensoldt scope.
    I'll never forget that.

The “legally justified” clause is such bullshit. Like okay who decides that pre trial? Does that just mean they have the right to say “yep, you’re not gonna win this case. You’re on your own”?

Bolt guns are just The Best for long distances but Gas guns are better than you think. For diatances at 800yards Gas guns will work, but you gotta be good.
