      Actually I liked it and found it soothing as I am new to moodle and it stresses me out. So maybe just include it but at a lower volume so that your voice stands out over it. Thanks for the great tutorial. This will be so useful in my teaching.

    I have been using this tool called GETMARKED Digitaliser. It allows me to create a Moodle XML file from my Word document quiz directly. The amazing thing about the tool is that i don't have to conform to any specific format. Despite the fact that the Word document quiz i prepared is for classroom use, it is still able to identify all the questions and answers inside it.
    Really really helpful honestly. Saved a lot of time from my end without having to create questions one by one.

  • @BzAdt
    @BzAdt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very helpful. Sooo many steps. One very important thing missed: you can't have anything in the text of the files besides letters and regular punctuation. Quotation marks and parenthesis, for example, completely throw Moodle off with the import. As soon as it sees quotation marks, for example, it just starts deleting. So you have to remove all of these. Once you have the quiz or test imported, you can add these back in; it's not that Moodle can't display them; it can't import them. Another step and a pretty big hassle. The import works best with very straightforward quizzes and tests.

      "Kristi Bowker: The same thing happened to me. It says I have 10 questions but only 7 of the questions had text."
      Kristi, it's probably a formatting issue in your text file. If you can you upload the text file with the questions to your Google Drive and share a link I'd be happy to look at it. Or you can submit a reply below with your text questions and I'll generate a text file and test it out on Moodle.

    Thank you for a great, easy to follow tutorial. I have already played around with it and it works great! My question is: Is there a way using this same format and not having to code in GIFT format to make a question that has a picture included. For example, I want to insert a picture of an ECG strip with a multiple choice question of "Identify this rhythm"? Thanks in advance!!

    • @Facultyworkshop
      @Facultyworkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The short answer is no. You can't add images with GIFT or Aiken formats. There are some advanced Moodle user (developer-level) who claim to have been able to import images using XML format, which frankly speaking isn't easy. There is some documentation to explain how to do it, but the process requires the use of an XML converter software. Unfortunately, it is in Russian. I haven't found a current version in English.
      Regarding your other questions, if you don't want to use GIFT, you can use Aiken, which is simplier. However, Aiken is appropriate for simple multiple choice and true/false type questions. GIFT requires a bit more coding, but it allows you greater flexibility in importing other questions formats (e.g., Multiple choice, Multiple choice with multiple right answers, True-false, Short answer, Matching, Missing word, Numerical questions, Essay, and Description).

    Excellent video, many thanks (others have mentioned the music...not a big fan!). One thing I noticed is your screen shots of Moodle are somewhat different than mine, and it did cause some navigation fun to try to keep up with you. The other nuance is how the Word doc has to be formatted to get it to save properly...for me, a hard return between everything! It did work beautifully, though! I am very appreciative!

      It's doable, but not quick. You'll need d different file format and a lot of unique codes. The easiest and most efficient was that I found was to upload all the questions (text only) and then upload the images and diagrams and insert them from Moodle or a cloud drive.

    Thanks for this tutorial! I am just starting to Moodle and have a couple questions: 1) Is it possible to have a bank of questions for a given course that randomly selects a number of questions to be shown to the user for a quiz? (Thus, if the user has to retake the quiz (s)he wouldn't see the exact same questions.) 2) Can quizzes include activity-based questions? (e.g., user sees multiple rows of boxes and has to select boxes that are NOT correct answers.)

    • @Facultyworkshop
      @Facultyworkshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the wonderful world of Moodle Krystal! The answer to questions 1 is kind of. You can set up question bank with say 20 questions and then create quiz with 10 questions. The second can be randomized, but there's a possibility that a question that showed up on the first attempt will make an appearance the second time around. So if you really!!! Did not want any questions to reappear, you'd need to create two separate quizzes.
      With regards to your second question, I'm not sure what you have in mind, but it sounds like the "Drag and drop" question types might achieve the same effect that I think you are looking for. Start with the "Drag and drop into text" see if that works for you.

    Very helpful technical tutorial Dr Al-Malood. I'm curious to see if this works with other question formats, such as true-false, matching and short answer. As others have previously mentioned, I too found the music a bit distracting.

    • @Facultyworkshop
      @Facultyworkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Haggisbreath I love the name :) I agree about the music. I wish I could remove it, but alas, TH-cam doesn't provide that feature at this time. For other question formats, you will want to use the GIFT format, not Aiken. GIFT requires a bit more coding, but it allows you greater flexibility in importing other questions formats (e.g., Multiple choice, Multiple choice with multiple right answers, True-false, Short answer, Matching, Missing word, Numerical questions, Essay, and Description). Here are a few videos that where I use GIFT format to import questions. If there's a specific format that you'd like me to cover, please leave me another comment. If you can include sample questions I'll try to use them in my response video.

    Thanks for your help. I do have one question. I often have 1-2 paragraph scenarios followed by 5-7 questions based on the scenarios. Do you have any suggestions how to link the scenarios to the set of 5-7 questions so they load together from the test bank?

      +Ron Zimmerman Presbyterian College excellent question. There are two ways that I could suggest. The first option is to duplicate the same scenario 5-7 times and simply change the question on each one. So you'd have 5-7 quiz questions with the identical scenario, but a different question on each one. This is probably the easiest and cleanest way to do it. However, if you really want to create one large question with multiple questions as you described, you'll need to use a question type in Moodle called "Embedded answers (Cloze)". That's not a typo, they're called "cloze" questions. The two issues with cloze questions is that they are a bit complicated to create on Moodle. You can create them on your desktop on Notepad or on a cloze generating software, which takes the coding difficulty out, but it is a slow process and you can only create and import one question at a time.
      Let me know if you need help with either of those options. I plan on creating a cloze question import video tutorial in the future.

    Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot. I would want to ask: What if I have a reading passage before the questions? Do I add it as a separate question with no weight? Or does it go separately?

      If the following questions are all related to the passages, I'd include the passage in the instructions of the questions.
