Starkey grew up piss poor on a council estate and his mum was a cleaner in the days when poverty was a reality and not a word used by politicians as a football. He is shining example of what a working class boy can do if he truly wants to better himself. His contribution to literature and history deserves a Knighthood .

When David was growing up, upward social mobility was possible and doable via the Grammar School system. Those of us with vocational abilities went to Secondary Modern.
Labour could have the working class being bled away so invented the Comprehensive Schools. Everyone was brought to the lowest common denominator.

Dr. Starkey must be brought back from the cold - he has far to much to offer. His 'sin' was an unfortunate turn of phrase, not something that should bring the curtain down on a marvelous career, and such a valuable voice. BRING HIM BACK! Allow this, and before you know it - THEY'LL HAVE COME FOR YOU!

@@bluepeter3470 yes he does. By pointing out the issues he shows people what needs to be done to keep the society we want. I love politics, but realize that everybody does. Dr. Starkey is a historian so it is with that lens we need to judge. I would suggest you look at videos of David's especially his take down of Laurie Penny.
Further, did you listen to this entire talk? If you did you would have realized that he points out the historic roots of what is happening now. His points about the differences between the American and French Revolutions. If we don't understand the roots of what is happening now we have no way of stopping the extremists.
Further, I agree with Dr. Starkey that one should read Edmund Burke's book on the French Revolution and how he was able to predict the course thereof!

Labour in its true form was the foundation of the working class intellectual. My father was true Labour and a working class intellectual. The Right was quite content to have poor people remain just ignorant enough to be controllable and do the crappy jobs that always needed doing. The original working class movement struggled to get working class/poor people to get the advantages of education. What today's Guardian reading pseudo Labouristas dislike is that once you have educated the working class to think for themselves, you can't control what they think.

Starkey’s observation that British conservatism is an alliance of the working and upper classes against the elite middle , came through in SPADES on Thursday. Redcar. Sedgefield. Don Valley. Workington. The list is endless. Those are genuine , solid , English working class areas. And they came out for Brexit and Boris.

Agreed. Working and upper classes share the virtue of patriotism. For whatever reason, the middle class tend to see patriotism as a problem.

    • @CCDR07
      @CCDR07 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I do not see how any of you have come to call the middle class "elite"? The "elite" in a socio-economic sense are are those with the most power. i.e. the richest. The "middle" class does not command anywhere near the amount of wealth/power as the top 1%, or .5%, or .1%, or anyway you want to split the top of the wealth pyramaid. The elite are those with the most wealth.
In reality, patriotism does not unite the working class with the upper class as these are completely different worlds, and the wealth/power of the top is dependant on the workering class staying "poor". Trying to harnass patriotism this way is a dagerous illusion, as what happens next when the lives of working people get harder relative to the upper class?

Honestly, I could listen to Dr. Starkey for hours. He has a delivery style that holds your attention and speaks with a clear knowledge and intelligence, based on hours, days and years of study and reflection. Above all, he speaks in a language which everyone can understand - he is not aloof or arrogant. I enjoyed his series (on his favourite topic - the Tudors) on TV. Every detail of the events of that period of history was covered and explained, along with the connection and implication for subsequent events.
He is an amazing man, who recognises the importance of the Constitution of this country and the imperative nature of its survival. He has been awarded a CBE...…..my question is "where is the knighthood or peerage?"
A product of a grammar school and Cambridge education, he has determined his own route through life, becoming a "go to" source for opinion on many issues. Sadly, as is so common these days, he is regularly condemned for simply giving his opinion and telling the truth. Equally sadly, those who attack him are rarely fit to lace his footwear.

Brendan Tannam - I disagree the landslide has come from traditional labour heartlands which he has ignored withe previous labour government going down the multi culti route. When they had the opportunity to voice their opinions they did in a referendum which he said he’d honour then didn’t. I would say if anything they were left with a poor choice because the dopey politicians who incidently voted 6-1 in favour of a referendum, then didn’t want to carry it out the result.

Out there, we've walked quite friendly up to Death,-
Sat down and eaten with him, cool and bland,-
Pardoned his spilling mess-tins in our hand.
We've sniffed the green thick odour of his breath,-
Our eyes wept, but our courage didn't writhe.
He's spat at us with bullets and he's coughed
Shrapnel. We chorussed when he sang aloft,
We whistled while he shaved us with his scythe.
Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed, -knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.
