Fully agree. I really wish Toriyama and Toei had given Jiren the backstory of being a former boy scout who used to be positive and upbeat about heroism until failing to save someone or even a whole planet of people from destruction. Afterwards he loses his optimism and becomes a more disturbed, pessimistic loner hero...y'know, kind of like Rorschach? Honestly it would've made more sense given the superhero theme and is a far more unique backstory compared to the generic "martial arts master/lone avenger" crap we've seen dozens of times.
You know we really didnt need a whole backstory. We have characters like Frieza or Hit where we dont know much about their past, and tehy are still entertaining foes.
Personally I wanted to know why he was so strong he wasn’t interesting enough for me to accept him being stronger than goku without some type of explanation I just didn’t expect it to be that cliche and kinda lame, I mean like literally bros more quiet than 3rd grader me so I at least wanted the explanation 🤣 but when I got it, I realized I was better off without it.
"He's strong cause he lost people dear to him and trained" "Sorry are we still talking about Jiren or like the other damn 20 fighters in this tournament that describes, how the fuck did Jiren "train" to be stronger than his own God of destruction?!"
I forgot if they mentioned what it really was in the anime, but the manga stated that his wish was to bring his master back so he could earn his approval. That's literally it. He wants to bring him back so he could ask if he's proud of him.
I feel sorry for Jiren. He lost everything when he was just a child. But, that's no excuse of turning into a jerk who doesn't care about anyone, but himself.
I still can't get over how funny this is, they gave him the most cliche and cookie cutter backstory he could've had. Jiren by this point just becomes a character that is driven by his "cool" factor and nothing else

He's not telling the full story is he, was the demon jiren's uncontrollable power? Why else would the demon disappear when jiren finally became "strong"
There's a really dumb theory about that foe but it's really cool. It says that Jiren somehow time travelled and became the monster so that he would become stronger. Like I said, it's dumb but coool.

Jiren is such a boring npc character that was randomly made strong.
