    What a stunning setting in which to live and conduct a refit. You are such a natural teacher, organized and focused. This video left me thinking, you know I could do this. Just watch the video again. I just love this channel.

      Of course you can do it. WE did it. Anybody can do it.

    Very instructional video. We have been thinking about a water maker but it seems like a big project. Your video makes it look like something I could handle and just make enough RO water for drinking and cooking. But a smaller day tank might be just the ticket for our needs. Thanks again and glad to see you are in a nice house again. We are in Iowa visiting Judy’s Mom who is in the hospital. Then on to PA to pick up my mom and her dog and take them to Yuma. Then hopefully back to the boat in SF. Maybe the fires will be out by then. Sending love to you both. V&J

    Hello! New to sailing So joining in on your channel at this time is a education in itself! Respect for your craftsmanship! See you next time!
    PS I learning to sail by crewing for races at a cove filled lake in mid Missouri. Very hands on and fun! So much to learn!

      Rebuilding the boat after years of sailing and living aboard is just part of the cruising life. Crewing on race boats is a great way to learn the finer points of sailing. Have fun!

    Looking good! I enjoy seeing how the water maker is going in. I've been thinking of getting one some day.

      If you are headed offshore we highly recommend it.

    That's the same watermaker that we bought a few years ago. Should take care of our needs, too.

      We chose that one because of the manual capability, not that you would ever wish to use it.

    After wicked salty went down with a faulty thruhull fitting,seems a good idea to close everything if your away from the boat it's something I've never thought of. I remember lealea having water in through the sink drain, these things are always tucked away.Great to see the watermaker instal the k35 has the manual handle so you can take it with you.is there a manual handle for the 40. Looking forward to the bathroom suite going in ,and that's some view guys

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. There is a manual pump handle with the 40e.

    Don't you need to sequester the initial output of the watermaker and dispose of it?

    I think it is necessary to strengthen the bulkhead. Vibration from the motor will be transmitted to it. And it will be a big diaphragm of the big speaker.

    Been following your very thorough and painstaking refit with both interest and delight - you are putting a lot of effort and love into Lealea. May I make a couple of observations on the watermaker install? You are passing nylon pipes through those three holes in the bulkhead - are you fitting rubber grommets to prevent pipe failure through fretting. Have you considered mounting the pump/membrane assembly on a rubber pad against the bulkhead mounting (to reduce vibration transmitted to the hull)? Keep up the great work. :-)

      @Cruisinglealea  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right to be concerned about chafe on those hoses where they pass through the bulkhead. However, when I inspected the old hoses on disassembly, I found no sign of wear so I did't think about it. Now that you mention it, though, it would be a simple matter to put rubber grommets in those holes just to be neat and thorough about it. My experience with rubber vibration damping systems would not lead me to try that here. IMO, better a solid mounting to the bulkhead. The vibration is very low frequency and not even noticeable. We had no indication of any problems with it for the 7 years the system was in use. Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

    I appreciate the refit videos, but I really miss your traveling adventures. What is your timeline for compleation of refit? When will you be on on the road (sea) again? Job well done!

    Would you mind telling us what the capacity of that water maker is? It looks very small and able to fit in a small boat quite well!

      This model is rated at 1.5 gallons per hour - 40 gallons in 24 hours so that's why the model name, 40e. This model also comes with an emergency hand pump but we have never tried it. In our experience, it will produce 2.5 gallons of fresh water in about 2 hours. The unit works better in warm sea water than it does in the high latitudes but we can't be more specific than to say it takes a little longer to fill our day tank. www.katadyn.com/us/us/102-8013438-katadyn-powersurvivor-40e-12-v

    How often do you need to change the filters?

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you follow the manufacturers recommendations concerning maintenance and use the unit regularly, very seldom. The filters are washable. The only time we have had to replace one was when we failed to let the filter dry completely after cleaning and before laying up for a few months. (You don't want to run the unit anywhere there is a chance of petroleum contamination like in a harbor so when we were in SF Bay for 5 months we ran the treatment and washed the filter). When we ran our pre-departure check we found the filter had some mold so we replaced it. If you run the biocide treatment and clean and dry the filter as recommended before laying up, as is recommended if the unit will not be used for more than a few days, you will have no problems and the filters will last for many months of regular use. The membrane is permanent and requires only the biocide treatment when laying up.

    Did you consider mounting the water maker in such a way that it could be quickly and easily removed as a unit? It's small, and can be hand operated. If the unthinkable happened, and you had to abandon ship mid-voyage taking the water maker with you could greatly increase the odds of survival.

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not that small and it is too heavy (About 25 bs) to easily move in an emergency situation at sea with the seperate strainer and pre-filter. The unit, with strainer and pre-filter must be mounted securely in order to operate the hand pump. a better solution for emergency use would be one of the self contained transportable units.

    • @kwbarnes1
      @kwbarnes1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about everything attached to a removable board that could be easily detached from the bulkhead. Cut the input hose, disconnect/cut the electrical, and lift the entire unit out. Keep a spare input hose, and the manual handle on the back of the board, and you have a self contained abandon ship water supply. Just something that occurred to me while watching the video.

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could work like that. As an exercise in possibilities the concept is OK. Our experience at sea leads us to believe it would be too cumbersome for use in a life raft though. IF you intend to go that route, thorough testing of the concept on the water would be in order.

    $3-4k for a water maker? What's some cheaper options?

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out the great cruising books of the nineteen fifties and sixties by authors like Eric Hiscock. Robin Lee Johnson, Annie Hill and, especially, Tristan Jones. You should be able to get some ideas there.

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @phục êwê We refer to other options that were used before desalination was available for small boats - auxiliary tankage, rain catchment etc. You would need to check with the manufacturer to find out about whether a particular unit can be used to filter fresh water.
