    5 Scariest Sightings Of Mermaids!
With most of our blue planet covered by water, it's little wonder that, centuries ago, the oceans were
believed to hide mysterious creatures including sea serpents and mermaids. Merfolk, that is, mermaids
and mermen, are, of course, the marine version of half-human, half-animal legends that have captured
    human imagination for ages.
Many children are perhaps most familiar with the Disney version of "The Little Mermaid," a somewhat
sanitized version of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale first published in 1837. In the original tales,
saying that they are very different is quite the understatement. In folklore, mermaids were often
associated with misfortune and death, luring errant sailors off course and even onto rocky shoals.
Though not as well-known as their comely female counterparts, there are of course mermen - and they
have an equally fierce reputation for summoning storms, sinking ships and drowning sailors.
They also weren’t depicted as we know them today. The book "Arabian Nights," described mermaids as
having "moon faces and hair like a woman's but their hands and feet were in their bellies and they had
tails like fishes.", far from the lovely ladies with flowing hair that we’re so used to seeing them.
Today, we will talk about tales of mermaids as they were originally meant to be; vile creatures who bring
nothing but disaster and misfortune to men. The last story is particularly disturbing, so make sure you
stay tuned for that. Here are 5 scariest sightings of mermaids.
    Number 5. The Orang Ikan
Merbeings have been present in folklore throughout the world since practically as long as folklore has
been around. Yet as much as the idea of half-human, half-fish beings may sound like mere flight of fancy
there are numerous reports of real-life sightings and encounters with strange merbeings from all over
    the world.
During World War II, amidst the fighting that was quickly flaming across the Pacific there is an
interesting case that was reported by Japanese soldiers from the Kei Islands of Indonesia in 1943. The
Kei Islands, also known as the Kai Islands, are located in the south-eastern part of the Maluka Islands of
Indonesia. It was in this gorgeous island paradise of postcard perfect, pristine white sand beaches that a
most peculiar and mysterious case of real merbeings occurred.
In 1943, Japanese soldiers stationed with a surveillance team on a small, remote island within the Kei
island chain reported seeing strange creatures in the water that were said to have limbs and a face
somewhat similar to a human, but a mouth like a carp, filled with needle-like teeth. These bizarre
creatures were described as typically being around 150 cm tall, and having pink or salmon colored skin,
as well as prominent spines or spikes of some sort on their heads or even their necks and shoulders.
These strange beats were not really keeping with the image of what a mermaid should look like at all.
Unlike the more classical mermaids, these merbeings were not described as attractive maidens, and did
not have wholly fish tails, but rather possessed two long arms and two prominent, frog-like legs, both of
    which ended in wicked talons.
These creatures were called the Orang Ikan by the locals. Stories suggest that these creatures are
peaceful and would rather stay away from land dwellers as much as possible. But just seeing one of
these weird and terrifying creatures would be enough to scare even a seasoned soldier.
    Number 4. The Hebridean Mermaid
Scotland has countless mysteries and legends, with mermaids taking a place in their folklore. However,
in 1830, a mermaid was apparently seen and subsequently killed by the people of Benbecula.
According to the story, people were busy cutting seaweed at Sgeir na Duchadh near Grimnis on the west
coast of the island of Benbecula. One woman spotted a creature several yards out in the water. The
creature looked like a woman in miniature. Alarmed she called to the others working on the shore who
also saw this strange sight. Men went into the water to try to catch the creature but she evaded them. A
boy aimed a rock at her which struck her on the back, she cried out in pain and disappeared beneath the
    waves.
A few days later a creature was washed up dead on the beach at Culle bay near the township of Nunton
which lies a few miles north of this spot. The creature was said to have the upper shape of a well-
developed woman but was around the size of a 4-year-old girl. She had long dark glossy hair and white
skin, however her lower half was described as being ‘like a salmon’ but without the scales.
    The local sherif was called.

Hi, I am a local in Scotland who lives near that Mermaid statue.
I'm afraid it is not the resting site of the one you speak of as this statue represents a story we are all told when we are young in this village (The Seaboard Villages).
Our Mermaid is called The Mermaid of the North.
You can look her up if you'd like.
    She has a different story.
The story that goes along with her is a simple and somewhat sad one.
She is seen by a local sailor on land who forces her back to his home and cuts off her mermaid tail, which he hides.
She could not find her tail for years and instead gave up and had a family with the sailor.
One day she found her tail under nets and bags, she raced to the Ocean and returned to her waters. The sailor knew she found her tail and begged her to come back. She refused but made a deal to come by every day with fish for her children as she still loved them.
Also she was mean to be a part of a statue trail where people could visit multiple statues on a walk and learn about the stories on the way.
I still live in this village and I am actually doing a college course brief around this area and it's folklore.
    I hope this was informative

The mermaid in this video is mostly moves by bending backward (rather sharply) and unbending their joint which is knee in the human.
If we to follow the principal of how fish moving, shouldn't a real mere-people able to bend it almost everywhere (with more subtle bending) and not just backward?
In my opinion, mere-people would also has vertical tail instead of horizontal tail with movement to the left and right just like real fish. Their central movement would be around the area their joint tail and tailfin

Have you seen dolphins and whales? Mermaids tails are more like dolphin/whale tails. Not fish tails. Dolphins and whales can't move their tails horizontally, only vertically. So no. They wouldn't necessarily be able to move "Like a fish".

The dams go undone because of fish people. Geesh Zimbabwe don't sedate and gently remove them to other locations. Use Tiny submersibles it's probably awkward . So they risk flooding. Cat fish as big as cars around ours lol so the people say.
