    Great to see the Isle of Lewis. My great great great grandmother left there for Nova Scotia and then came out to NZ. I am just reading The Black House,by Peter May which has got me so interested in Lewis.A wonderful heritage we have!

    My grandmother told me we were macleod of Lewis after I became enamored with the highlander movie and series, I knew we were Scottish but didn't know how much until after learning the results of her genealogy studies..I married a catholic girl, so the tradition continues..

    Interesting video! I'm also descended from McLeod's in Australia - my great great grandfather was John McLeod (b. 1840 Isle of Skye) who emigrated to Australia in 1864 and died in Victoria in 1908. He met and married Flora McCowan whose mother was actually a MacDonald - which, from some history I've read, might have been a bit scandalous also!
    It's one of my dreams to travel to Scotland and visit some of these same places so thank you for sharing :)

    My fathers name was John Andrew MacLeod but he was born in Inverness in1920. My grandfather's father came from Stornaway (Capital of Lewis) and going further back to Usit another of the outer hebrides isles. My father alway said we originally came from Skye, Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral home for the Clan MacLeod. If you think 8deg is cold come here in winter where the temperatures can drop to -26 deg!! BTW my family were all married in "The Free Church" otherwise known as the "Wee Free" and they don't have any time for Catholics! The tartan you should use is the yellow one, the other gets known as Hunting MacLeod (for Harris) and the crest is "Stand Fast" Also my oldest brother John MacLeod lives in Melbourne and supports the Magpies! my dad's oldest sister emigrated to Melbourne in 1924 married and had 4 children. 3 girls and one boy. My 2nd cousin is married to the grandson of the surveyor of the Great Ocean Road! small world?

    You were right first time about the Jacobite's...they fought against the British, not the English. The Scottish and English crowns were united under James Stuart, the 6th of Scotland in 1603 and the English and Scottish Parliaments united in 1707. The Jacobite uprising, to restore a Stuart Monarchy was 1745. The British Government banned tartan and bagpipes after the '45, not the English.

    One of my ancestors was Macleod with royal ancestry as with the rest of my Scottish ancestry. The family tree didn’t fork very well with the Royal ancestors. The same names kept popping up in all of them in family genealogy. The last Royal ancestor of Scotland was in the 17th century. Their bio history was backed by historians and scholars was dreadful. Their wealth could never meet our standards of living. Many of the American descendants ended up in Eastern Ky after the American Revolution. They’re the church goers, humble industrious people, who never discuss their Scottish roots in Scotland. We’re proud Americans who plan to stay this way.

    My family arrived on Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia in 1800. Donald & Allister was my father & uncles names . My Grandfather Mac Leod married to a 6 foot Mac Pherson woman & he was named Big Dan Mac Leod at 6 ft seven & his sons were both over 6 "4". My mom, a Morrison at 5" tall & daughter of a MacDonald were small folk. Thus I fell a bit short of 6 feet although my son is 6 4 . We wear the Yellow but know that as two brothers founded the MacLeods clan we can go into the world proud of the name Thor wearing all the tartan colors associated with the MacLeods. . I love the fact that Thor is still the nicname of my Family. I still carry my heritage to the Hebrides here in the same farm as my ancestors landed on here in 1800. My full name is Donald Allister MacLeod & my blood answers to the tartan & the Pipes as a part of my Soul. Good to see my Aussie clan feel as I do in their roots. We really are a Commonwealth.

    • @DonnieTHORMacLEOD

      If he did he might be associated with Reverend Norman MacLeod who settled Cape Breton & then took clan members to Australia first & then moved to New Zealand where he dies after making settlements for Christ in all three communities. Our Presbyterian Church here is named St. Columba & I am an Elder in it. .

    Andrew, is your John MacLeod 1856-1920 emigrated to Australia? I have a DNA match with a descendant living in Australia... my 3x great grandmother is Catherine McAuley about 1790-1863 at Stornoway (MacLeod) daughter of Kenneth MacLeod and Catherine (Morrison).

    I was born in stornoway and my family hold the macleod name and spoke gaelic not gaaylic. Why are you saying gaay-lic when it's gaelic .Australians don't cut this island reporting of stornoway .

    • @naomipask9956
      @naomipask9956 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pronouncing the word Gay-lic and not Gah-lick is probably ignorance to Gaelic vowel sounds. The way the ae is said in English would have us say it incorrectly. I have had to educate myself in the use of Gaelic vowels.
