  • The camper was my first Victorinox, purchased in mid 2018. I then put a classic SD on my keychain and the love for these tools was ignited. I briefly discuss each SAK I currently own, covering highlights and some lowlights. Also displayed are a few carry methods I've tried over the years. I end the video naming my top 4 choices.

    My first Victorinox was also a Camper model but it's about 56 years older than yours! Purchased in 1962 when I was 7 years old. No scale tools or mini screwdriver back then. It has a few scars (character builders) but is still in great condition and occasionally carried.

      Better late to the game than never! The first interaction I ever had with an SAK was my friend's that was missing the scissor spring and was BEAT UP. I believe it was a huntsman his dad passed down. We used to pick apples from the yard in the summertime and he'd cut them up. Good times for sure!

    The pioneer x is actually thinner than the compact. That's the beauty of alox. The three layers are just as thin as 2 layer plastic. You give up scale tools, but you gain much better drivers and openers, plus the awesome awl. Pioneer X for the win. 😁 I edc one next to a Skeletool and it's awesome.

      I’m definitely getting one on the way in the next couple of weeks! I like the pen but I can get a Vic manager to take care of that if I really prefer the pioneer x

      @@EngineersPerspective701 Manager is definitely my capable favorite little Victorinox. I’d definitely give up a toothpick or tweezers for having a pen… and I know this is months later but Victorinox Army 6 (with the awesome harvester blade but no saw) has also become easily my favorite two layer Alox, even more so than the Electrician.

    • @EngineersPerspective701
      @EngineersPerspective701  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpecterSeventy2 Neat little hook blade! So it’s the same as an electrician but with the hook vs straight blade?

    • @SpecterSeventy2
      @SpecterSeventy2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EngineersPerspective701 Yes, otherwise exactly like the electrician… & currently I’m basically building a custom pioneer X with ultra thin and lightweight titanium scales but with the curved Harvester blade (in the place of the can opener). Should be my perfect three layer Alox in addition to my favorite two layer Army 6 when completed.

    Always go back to the Pioneer. Just perfect rugged minimalism. Whatever else I get I end up pocketing the Pioneer because it’s tough yet pocketsbl

      The pioneer is a real gem. My favorite SAK as a companion for doing work. Although I do prefer the pioneer x for the scissors

    I got my first SAK back in the early 1980's when I lived in Switzerland as a young teenager.
    I am not sure what model it was and lost it when we moved back to the UK.
    I got back into SAK's last year and I have built a nice collection.
    I got a Classic SD since I needed scissors and I did not want to carry a full size pair with me every day.
    I have since got
    Climber "Place To Be"
    Pioneer X Alox Limited Edition 2022
    Cadet Alox
    Companion New York Style
    Jetsetter@work Alox
    Compact
    Pioneer X Alox
    My EDC arre the Classic SD, Jetsetter and the Compact.
    I am looking to rotate the Compact with the Standard Pioneer X Alox as my day to day carry.

      Very nice! Highly, highly recommended getting a rambler and seeing if that displaces your classic SD. It’s one of my top 3 with the compact and pioneer x as my larger main EDCs like yourself!

      @@EngineersPerspective701that is a thought but I have the Jetsetter@work that has the same tools as the Rambler but without the blade.
      It also has a 32GB USB stick that is both USB-A & USB-C.
      It was expense compared to the Rambler but having a USB stick built in is great for a Tech Support Engineer like myself.
      To be honest I think the Jetsetter@work can replace the Classic SD since I rarely use the blade.
      I have the Compact if I need a blade.

    On the camper, you can wrap that lanyard once around the base of the say, run it down the handle and grip it, and it won't fold up on you when you are sawing or striking a ferro rod. Works better if you have a leather boot lase for a lanyard, though.

    • @EngineersPerspective701
      @EngineersPerspective701  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea! I've just been holding onto the blade itself when using it on a ferro rod. Not ideal but it works and I haven't accidently poked myself.... yet.

    My Compact is my favorite too. I’ve carried it to many countries and it’s a great package. BTW, that blade slant you mentioned (in reference to the wire stripper) is called actually “crinking” by knifemakers-In case you ever appear on Jeopardy!

    I have had a few in my time, but my current favourite is the new Farmer X alox, everything I want and use on a regular basis. I have owned many penknives in my life and it has to be said that there is no equal to the precision and the durability of a Victorinox SAK. They define quality and everything else is measured from that. You can take your fancy stainless steels and your fancy designs but I have never owned any other folding knife that has the precise click of an SAK.

    • @EngineersPerspective701
      @EngineersPerspective701  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That beautiful snap as you close the implements is the trademark of SAKs. The quality they deliver is awesome and then at the price is just astounding. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of an SAK needing to be returned straight from the factory. Just love em.
      What do you find yourself using the saw on most?

    At 12:51 I've been having the same problems when using the all but I've found a fantastic little spenr key ring where the poickit clep can hang in my pocket but my Swiss army knife can 360 so it's always sitting the proper way plus it's very easy to take on and off its a 360 small size key ring that can easily Pop into the poickit clep if you understand you can find them alot on little EDC poickit lights thanks buddy 👍🏻

      I think I follow what you're saying. It still adds extra length to the pocket clip which makes it a bit floppy in my pocket I feel. However, you've inspired me to look for another style. There are a few "S" style of clips for large key rings to hook onto the belt. I may find or make a mini version of one of these. More to come!

    In regards to wire stripping capabilities, the rambler really hits the spot since the blade is almost flush with the combo tool, where the notch is.

    • @EngineersPerspective701
      @EngineersPerspective701  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a little comical but when I was building a large scale lab setup I had tons of k type thermocouple wiring (20gauge I believe) and we had nothing in the shop to strip it. So that first day I used my rambler to get the work done. After that I used the pioneer or a razor.

      Jokes aside, that's the beauty of having layers of redundancy in such small packages as the 58mm victorinox knives.
