- This video displays the procedure we follow here, in Arkefthos Bonsai, to air layer pines, in our garden. Today we air layered Pinus thunbergii and Pinus sylvestris. Experimenting with vertical slits at the layering cut vs a simple cut. We'll see the results in 3 or 4 years down the road!

1. Clean the needles from the layering trunk.
2. Make two ring cuts around the stem aprox. 3cm apart
3. Make one vertical cut between them to help remove the bark
4. Remove the bark between the cuts
5. Clean with the blade any cambium remnants
6. Clean the cut of the upper ring so fresh cambium is exposed
7. Apply a viscous water solution of rooting hormone on the upper ring
8. Place the modified pot on the stem. Upper ring aroung the middle
9. Hydrate moss (with rooting hormone sollution if you want)
10. Pack moist moss tightly in the pot
11. Secure the pot in place
12. Water whenever the top of the moss feels dry
How many years do you think it will take to root? I’m thinking about doing a couple on my black pine niwaki.
You should go for it. Now is a good time in the season. If done right (with good strong hormone) and kept moist, you should see roots by October. So, less than a year, just a few months is your answer. Cheers!
I have had success air layering Japanese Black Pine and Mugo Pine. It can take up to two growing seasons some times, before I can remove the new layered tree from parent tree.. I've heard Scots pine is impossible to layer, But I hope you have success.
Yes, indeed, they might take up to two seasons to root properly. I don't know about scots pine in generall, but this tree roots relatively easy for me. I have three air layers on now, and some cuttings that are already pushing hard with 100% success rate . Will have some refernce in autumn. Really glad you had success with JBP and mugo. Thank you! Pinus sylvestris callused a lot but no roots yet. Pinus thunbergii, had 2 trees already separated with a lot of roots. The 2 air layers on the sunny side, one failed and died the other one callused heavily but no roots yet. Guess they must have dried out a couple of times while I was abroad during July. I have posted images of the rooted ones on my Instagram account. Cheers!
do you know if ceder will air layer and if so how long does it take to produce roots
If you mean the true cedars, the Cedrus species, yes they will. They are on the difficult side of rooting but they do. I believe that they would take more than a year in most situations. If you are skilled and lucky you might get roots in one season. They also root as cuttings but still less than 10% success. Good luck Andrew!

Thank you very much! It's not the easiest genus to air layer but some of the species are able to. Thunbergii and sylvestris are some of them. I would expect parviflora to be quite difficult as well as all the five needle pines. You should try sylvestris since you have so many in Sweden. Very early spring and keep them from drying throughout the summer. Of course there is going to be a follow video by the end of September to early October. Best regards from Greece!

At what time in year can you do this?
Late March, just before they start swelling and push new growth. But I'm experimenting with summer hybernation, around late June. I might do a video about that. Cheers Alexander!
If I use a plastig bag (properly closed)how often do you think I have to water the moss?
I advise for using a plastic bag (properly closed) covered with aluminum foil. Watering is sparse. Depending on temperature and rain patterns, probably once per month. It's better to use plastic bag. Cheers!
Does it work and which Climate is in your area??? In my place its very dry and hot
During Summer(South Germany)
Yes! It does actually work. We are in Greece, but 900m altitude. We get 34 C deg in the summer and it's really dry but this doesn't matter. If you can keep the moss moist until late September, early October, many of the air layers will succeed. Actually warmth from the sun actually helps the root production as long as the moss is moist. I recommend you try on the south side on the tree as long as the north. I try to chose branches that will have a few hours of direct sunlight even during July and August. We've had about 80 - 90% succes with these trees the previous years. Pinus thunbergii is easier but this sylvestris I have, roots really good, for a pine. Water the pots every 2 days in the summer and check the moisture every day. Late winter or very early spring is the best time for air layering pines, just before the sap starts to flow heavily. My airlayers all dry out in 45 degrees heat and trees are Burning from the apecs
Even my fruits are burned out
Cherries dry out even plums die from the Hot Sun here in South germany
Relativ Air moisture is 20 % here
@@thegreenmanalishiyamadori371 I ddin't know it was that extreme. Maybe you can experiment with different dates. Start in October and check for new roots in early June, before the extreme heat hits.

@@thegreenmanalishiyamadori371 yes, it's sad. We have noticed different weather the past few years as well. Too little rain in spring and heat waves much sooner even in May. Not looking good. Hopefully the Abies cephalonica will survive enough to adapt since it's the most heat and drought tolerant of all abies species. Forest above looks good still...

On sylvestris, no. I'm still trying to make it root. But on thunbergii I had two rooted. In fact, soon I will be working on one of the rooted ones and make a video of it.

where was your air layer done? countryside. park, your garden?
My garden. I have been collecting conifers since 2010. This thunbergii is in the ground since 2014. I have posted, since then, the successful air layer on my Instagram account. Since then the tree has been growing great. I'll probably work on it this October. Cheers!

It is said that it is nearly impossible. My own try, that you see in the video, is still there, a year later no roots but the branch is still alive. I haven't checked since April. Now that you mentioned it, I should check if it rooted tomorrow morning.
