I have this theory. When you are playing against greats, it's always a good idea to play someone young. Because they are fearless. They would want to prove a point. And they don't have any experience of having been annihilated by the greats. This could also be why Sachin got out to so many newcomers.

But the missing details are that Sharma had bowled 7 overs on the trot and Kumble was considering throwing the ball to someone else when Sehwag (vice captain, IIRC) interjected and asked him to give Ishant another over since he had been troubling Ponting, whom was in form, and as a fellow Delhi player, he'd seen Ishant bowl lengthy spells. Good call.

We don't had any fancy mobiles/ internet at that time. Again turn on TV around 7.30 AM, watch the score, then turn off TV. These youngsters with android phone with 3 months internet connection along with hotstar subscription has no idea how beautiful to watch cricket just 10 years back. Pure bliss & good nostaliga❤️❤️😭🙏. When Ishant was new he was all over the news. I remember one news paper saying he is blessing to india. His inswing at high pace was boost to india. Good old hostel school days
Remember the first time we saw him as a raw talent and thought he could be the permanent 145+ fast bowler india has finally had. He couldn't be the legend he could have. Though he is a very good bowler now, but his middle career all got wasted.
He was a bit of laughing stock for much of his career, but the way he has turned his career around in the last few years is very commendable - he has clearly worked very hard to get his inswing back, and his consistency is excellent.
But now also at the age of 31, he bowls consistently near 140 mark, and with his line more aggressive towards batsman, he is a gem with the new ball in tests....
And this match is sehwags return to test cricket after a year or so..and he is the one who said to kumble to give ishant one more over and he picks up pointing..sehwag the legend 🙏🏻

Secondly, Ponting played another 5 years after this test so was nowhere near his career end. Lastly, your comparison is utter rubbish because then Harbhajan troubled him in his prime, that does not make Ponting any less of a batsman or bhajji the greatest bowler and definitely doesn't make Ishant a zero. It's you talking like an ass. Stop taking offences and take notice of his sheer brilliance in 2008

What an incredible display of fast bowling! Ishant always managed to bring out his best against Ricky Ponting. I remember a few more great spells he bowled against the legend even on flat pitches in India and troubled him throughout the 2008 series.
