這首「因祂活著」曾被福音詩歌協會及ASCAP評選為「1974年最佳福音詩歌」。
比爾蓋瑟（William J. Gaither,1936- ）和葛蕾亞（Gloria Gaither, 1942- ）同在家鄉印第安納州亞歷山大鎮的一所高中教書，經常一同在各教會獻詩，1962年結為夫婦，育有二女一子。 1967年他們辭去教職，全時間奉獻於聖樂事工，除了寫福音詩歌，灌製唱片外，每年有三十至五十場音樂演唱會。
1960年代末，美國社會混亂，充斥「上帝死了」的謬論，又逢越戰激烈，人民意志消沉；這時葛蕾亞發覺懷孕，而親友們認為不合時宜。 1970年他們合寫了這首詩歌，深信幼兒的誕生雖前程難測，但因主活著，不用懼怕，生命充滿希望。 那年秋天，比爾幫助他父親在辦公的後院舖設一停車場，用了無數車的大小卵石，沙土，一層層地滾壓，最後舖上瀝青和碎石。 翌年春天的一個早晨，比爾的父親呼他們去停車場觀看，他們看到在停車場的正中，有一枝翠綠的小草在陽光中迎風飄搖，它雖纖細，但有生命。 這給了他們「生命戰勝了死亡的權勢」的確據。 這首聖詩成了他們生活的準則，它安慰鼓勵了許多對未來心存恐懼的徬徨者，也有許多葬禮用它安慰喪者的家屬。1976年筆者來美，在好多教會聽到詩班獻唱此詩，唱完末句後，同聲歡呼「祂活著」。 街上也到處可看到基督徒的車後貼有「祂活著」的標語。
