    Love that you are covering this title! Minis agnostic skirmish games are having a moment imo.. Some very cool indie stuff out there, from Reign in Hell, Forbidden Psalm, Turnip 28, Space Weirdos, One Page Rules etc.. These games are often labors of love, but there's a lot to dig into in this space now.

    Five Parsecs from Home and Rangers of Shadow Deep have been my two favourite games for years now. I do think FPfH is best as a solo experience and RoSD is best as a cooperative game.

    Nice review. I was also considering getting this and using my Blackstone Fortress characters and enemy models. I'm also looking forward to Five Leagues from the Borderlands, so I may wait for that, since I probably have more random fantasy enemies than 40k ones.

    Five Leagues from the Borderlands is up now for pre-order and the PDF is available to download now when you order the book. 😀

    Glad you enjoyed this; always fun to watch these. You might want to check out the Trailblazer’s Toolkit if you haven’t already; it’s a PDF (only) with some nice optional rules. For example, there are about 8 different enemy deployment modes that have varying probabilities depending on which AI is running the enemy. (Cautious, Aggressive, Tactical, etc.)
    There are also a bunch of difficulty levers to choose from, including elite enemies, and some suggestions for using a few of these levers to add escalating difficulty to your campaign. This is one way you could keep playing with the same crew in a follow-on campaign.
    Five Parsecs is a great starting point for combining solo RPG with skirmish, and I’m looking forward to the new edition of Five Leagues from the Borderlands.

      I've not looked at that. I saw it, but frankly it just went out of my mind. I'll definitely get it and check it out. Thanks for the reminder :)

    I preordered this a while back but never got it to the table. Might need to finally do that.

    Nice review. I'm a big fan of this game - picked up many mini's since last summer to play, from Infinity, to JudgeDredd/Strontium Dog to GW stuff. Anyone looking for terrain, check out saucerman studios current kickstarter for flat line city 2, so many cool options to build out scenarios for this game. Thanks for the fun review.

    I'm waiting on League of Dungeoneers to arrive, and this seems like a perfect game to get into in the meantime.

    Great review. Five Parsecs is an amazing game. As is Five Leagues, the fantasy version. I enjoy playing them both.

    Question; Would this game work as ”animation episode generator?”
    For example, create/roll characters -> create/roll the world(s) -> play and document down a game session -> write a proper script of what happened in the game session from the document you wrote on the game session’s and flesh-out each characters based on their performances -> etc.

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably? It could at least generate the skeleton for it that could be fleshed out.

    Have you ever considered a 3D printer? One of the best things about a 3D printer is looking for minis that work with these mini agnostic games. That in itself becomes your unique story as you build your own warband from minis that appeal to you.

      Oh, I've thought long and hard about! I have a couple of friends that each have one. I just don't need ANOTHER hobby beyond, playing games, reviewing them, doing video stuff, painting, etc.... :)
      In the back of my head I'm still thinking about it lol

    Will you review 5 leagues from the borderlands 3rd edition when it releases? As a Rangers of Shadow Deep fan it seems up my alley.

    If you were to play this now and didn't already have a bunch of sci fi minis, what product would you pick up for a good blend of stuff that fits the theme? Most of my miniature collection is fantasy. :/

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question. Several options. Could do a Star Wars themed idea and pick up Imperial Assault or a bunch of Legion, or pick up some Necromunda boxes from GW, or some other 40k box. I mostly use Necromunda and Blackstone Fortress stuff for this. Blackstone Fortress can be had, but it's largely out of print. You could also pick up a bunch of the Stargrave minis from North Star. Finally, you could grab some stuff for Deadzone from Mantic.

    I really don't understand the no miniature miniatures games. A rulebook is not a game.

    • @Psychichazard
      @Psychichazard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's miniatures agnostic: use whatever minis you have handy. I'm using GW, Wargames Atlantic, Crooked Dice, Mantic, Alternative Armies, Void, Stargrave, etc etc. It means that games writers don't have to get into miniature design. This game in particular is such a gift to the imagination, you can create your own narrative in whatever universe you can dream of. If that's not your thing, okay....

    • @PuppaSmirk
      @PuppaSmirk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Completely agree, I would recommend giving it a try Matt B. There are a massive amount of fantastic rulesets out there. 5 Parsecs from Home is one of my favourites. If you don't have lots of miniatures and terrain floating around from other games you can use - then I would recommend grabbing Tabletop Simulator on Steam and getting the fan made 5 parsecs content via the workshop - just search for 5PFH and you'll get a bunch of terrain, board and miniatures options (I also use infinity and core space content for it as well). Not as much fun as the whole physical hobby side of it - but cheaper and easier to set up and tear down :)

      Of course it's a game. I don't really understand why you would think it's not. Game rules are the game.

      Everyone beat me to it. A game's components are really the least of everyone's concerns.
