  • My new craft space is amazing, but it is time for me to go through and refine some of the organization and some of the smaller spaces. First up is my ephemera! Mine is organized into Alex drawers from IKEA, so I am switching up a few things and sharing the "why's" behind the choices I make. I hope it inspires you to dive into your craft room. I use shelf liner that looks like rug pad in my drawers to prevent my small containers from sliding around. Bonus: the shelf liner can be a design element that makes me smile every time I open a drawer😊

    Take the screws out from the sides of the drawers to pull out further thats what i did and i love it so much more! also re heat the label with a heat gun or blow dryer and then you can peal labels off easily :)

      I need more details please. I don’t see a screw on the side of the drawer that is impeding it from being pulled out further. I hate that a large portion of the drawer isn’t really even usable.

      Same problem - I have 2 of those Alex units and love them but when we pulled the screws out from the sides the drawers fall off the slides that are being held in by the screws - am I missing something?

    • @7andearth76
      @7andearth76 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patgessner1853 My units have some tension along the slides, so the drawers don't slide out "too smoothly". You just have to be carful to not slide them out all the way. I haven't had an issue with them falling out. Maybe mark your drawer along the top edge to give yourself a distance to not pull further than that marking.

    I had a closer look at my Alex drawers yesterday and I found that if I gently used some extra strength when I pulled them open they all opened an extra few inches. I didn’t have to remove any screws. So happy 😁

    In the 3rd drawer you had some very shallow bins that you were able to stack. They weren’t clear but still mostly see through. Do you know where they came from? I’d love to be able to stack to maximize space.
    Also, I want to say that I love your channel! Love that you do so many different things like Bible Journaling, planning and card making! Thank you for always sharing so many great ideas!

    I have found that if you spray the sticker with goo gone and let it sit for a few minutes it is much easier to remove them. They also mostly come off in one piece and pulling them slowly is key.

    The heat from a hair dryer for a few seconds, will remove tags. My dad saw a worker at the dime store remove labels in this manner. We have heated up the hair dryer anytime labels need to be removed (the labels come off in one piece without leaving residue.)

    Currently, I'm in my collage 'phase'. of mixed media crafting.
    So I'm re-organizing my small paper pieces and scraps over this holiday weekend [Labor Day 2023]. I don't organize by color; I don't organize by brand or collection. Just by archival quality and size.
    I first sort paper into 2 broad categories:
    1) Achival patterned scrapbooking paper - die cuts, sentiments, everything smaller than 12" sheets, off cuts, journal spots, etc. [tags and pockets I store separately]. 2) everything else / not archival - found papers, receipts, maps, die cuts, images, packaging, vintage photos, used notebook paper, book pages, etc.
    [tea stained, rice paper, deli paper, tissue paper, wax paper are all stored in labeled page protectors in a re-purposed rolling bin under my table.]
    The next sorting iteration is the hardest and most time consuming for me: sorting by size, because I don't have just one cart or dresser to store everything together. The various sizes are then put in 2 three-drawer rolling carts and clear 3-drawer acrylic boxes at the back section of my 'conference' worktable. I DO own 3 large rolling ALEX carts, and one is in my craft studio. But it is behind my chair with stamps (store bought and my DIY carved stamps), stamp pads, and liquid adhesives. These are things I don't use as often - and I want my ephemera in front of me or next to me for constant use. But I do use divided silverware trays, divided hardware trays, small re-purposed sushi trays, small bins, old food storage containers, small cardboard jewelry boxes AND their lids. It is a constant challenge - and yes, my studio is always evolving! 🙂Wish me luck! TFS!

    Use Un-do to get off stickers, labels. Works great to remove tape if you've stuck something down wrong. Doesn't work for wet glue tho. I make cards and mini albums and it's a life saver when I stick something down crooked or change my mind. I get mine on Amazon. Also works if you get some adhesive boogers on a picture. Doesn't harm photos or paper and dries clear after a few seconds or a hot minute.

    I use alcohol to remove the labels. The craft storage small pencil boxes fit perfectly I'm the Alex drawers and you can see everything. I store my ephemera in them, along with tassels, tim holtz stuff, etc.
    When I don't use the pencil boxes I use the cardboard that comes with the Alex drawers to keep my bins from going all the way to the back. I just happened to save them and I wrapped paper on them.

    I have a section for my 12 x 12 pattern paper and keep the matching ephemera with it in one of those 14 x 14, 2 gallon ziplock bags. When I've used most of it up, I divide the paper & ephemera by color with the ephemera going into clear acrylic makeup drawers. I also add any diecuts I've made but didn't use into those drawers as well.

    I organize my paper pieces by size for three reasons.
    1. Easy storage… all items of a single size fit in a container slightly larger, leaving less unused space in containers.
    2. It’s easy enough to flip through and look for colors… which…
    3. Makes it easier to see other colors that coordinate or give me palette ideas I may not have otherwise.
    In the beginning, you were removing labels from the side of the clear bins that are never seen because they abut against each other. You may have noticed, too, ice I didn’t see you relabel them, but that seems like a waste of effort. It’s different, of course, for the shallow ones that pile up higher than the clear bins in front.

    If you do not put the drawer stops in you can pull the drawers all the way out. It does not take long before you learn how far out you can pull them before they come all the way out. If you have already put the drawer stops in and decide to remove them please be warned that decision is permanent as the drawer stops will break when you remove them. To me that 3 inches is precious space that I can use so I do not install the drawer stops.
    Try Un-do or Goo Gone for label and other sticky residue removal.

    There is a little stopper or screw at the back of the Alex drawers that you can remove to make them come all the way yout but be careful that you don't tip the unit when you do - they are put n there as a safety thing. How do I organise things - well, that's why I'm watching this video - I'm not sure yet how I'm going to categorise things. I don't have much in the way of ephemera as I do more cards than anything else but I'm looking for different ways to store stamps and dies - I'm not an open bin in plastic sleeves kind of person - I need them closed away from dust and dog hair! I agree with you 100% to use the bathroom, kitchen and even hardware storage. My hubby works for a hardware chain here in Aus so much of my storage options have come from the hardware store! More versatile than craft storage and better size ranges.

      @ScrappyWife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, I can see that closed storage might be a little more challenging to find for your stamps and dies. Have you found any binders that might work?

    • @TinyStitches1
      @TinyStitches1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ScrappyWife Not as yet, still searching. I don't want pockets in a binder to get too heavy, but I have seen some A5 ones with multiple configurations in their pockets so might sort the dies issue. Its a work in progress!

    Are those true Alex drawers, or “Alex” style drawers? I always thought the Ikea Alex drawer units were pretty deep.

    What do you mean by “one off” or did you say “one of “? You used this terminology a couple of times in the early part of the video.

    • @ScrappyWife
      @ScrappyWife  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I talk about "one-off" organization pieces, those are ones you might pick up at TJ Maxi or Homegoods that you can't easily find another replicate of. Or an organization piece that is designed just for one specific thing that is not flexible enough to serve a different purpose if needed.
