  • The Top 100 Hubble Pictures Series. Today we are travelling to the Tarantula Nebula or 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is the biggest HII nebula in the local cluster of galaxies, and there is a lot of interesting things to see, including the most massive star, the brightest star, and the fastest rotating star. We also look at SN1987a, a supernova remnant.
    On the ESA/NASA website for the Hubble Space Telescope www.spacetelescope.org/ there is a section dedicated to the top 100 pictures ever taken by Hubble. I will go through these pictures one by one and explain what is going on.

    I didn't know a star could rotate so fast that it flattens out and creates a disc around it :O

    • @dbsti3006
      @dbsti3006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it makes sense. The faster something spins, the more disc shaped it becomes. Some pulsars spin so fast that even something as dense and hard as a Neutron Star, can flatten like a football. It's astonishing.

    Imagine living on a planet in the Large Magellanic Cloud and seeing a nebula day and night, casting shadows on the ground. Almost makes me jealous we can’t experience that here. But it’s probably for the best that we don’t have something like that near us, otherwise I’d imagine it would be much harder to gaze into the stars with our telescopes because of the extra interference from the nebula’s light.

Having observed SN 1987a with my Celestron 5" less than a day after its discovery (it was yellowy, naked-eye visible, and its brightness was still on the rise), and followed it since, it was nice to see the relatively recent image of it and the artist's reconstruction in 4k.

    when did astronomy discover that the night sky wasn’t a canopy with holes in it.......a long long time ago when Zeus and Apollo were the invisible friends of the moment. I look up in the night sky in awe and wonder and as proof of my non-belief in invisible friends.

    The large Magellanic cloud is being ripped apart and will be eaten by the Milky Way, the rapid star formation is a dead giveaway that the gravitational interactions disturbed and compressed the gas clouds.
    That is so cool, i've always been fascinated by colliding galaxies and we have one or maybe more (small Magellanic cloud?) right in our own neighborhood.
    There are also thin yet massive "rivers" of millions of stars stretching half way around the Milky Way but are not in the galactic plane, we see this is several merging galaxy photos as well.
    Also the edges of the galactic disc of the Milky Way are bent, meaning some gravitational force is acting on those stars, like a supermassive black hole at the center of the Large Magellanic cloud, since there is still a large dense cluster of stars in the cloud, it can be assumed that's where the smbh is.
