- Repasting / cleaning a GPU can definitely increase the performance and reduce fan noise. This video shows you how to re-apply thermal paste on your GPU. In this case a graphics card from Asus. The results of this, was well worth the operation!

Thanks for this. Exactly same issue on a second hand card. Took apar after watching this and no responds to fan curves and custom assignments and temp is 10-15 degrees less :)

I watched this two days ago cause my strix fans started ramping to 100% even when at 65c and 85% power limit, ordered the stuff, followed your guide and boom , 55C at 100% power limit, no fan ramp and no more crashing (it used to crash at 100% power limite), thank you soo much, only thing i'd say is you don't need the ifixit kit for anything, can use any small head screwdriver.
did you just changed thermal paste or also pads? cause mine has 3 different pads which can be quite expensive and i guess if i take care to not tear the original one appart while separating the cooling from the board it should be ok

Thank you so much for this guide. Was able to take care of it on my lunch break and went from running Unity engine games (such as Pathfinder) with hot point temps at 103C with fans blowing like an aircraft to running the same at a comfy 75-80 (other games never game me problems and now run at a more comfortable 50-60c but I've read that Unity engine will consume all the resources a GPU has even if it doesn't need it).
A friend has sold me his used 2080ti build as he just upgraded. It kept randomly shutting off. This seems to have fixed the isse...also the computer is maybe half a noisy as it was. Thank you
I have exact the same card had, terrible temps since the guy before me bought it new, he even contacted the store he bought it in and they said it shall have those temps...:/. And now when i bought it from him i opened it and it looked as horrible as your card. So repasted it with Arctic mx-4, Temp before was in Heaven benchmark 80c on gpu and 102-103c on the hotspot. Now it is 57c on the gpu and 66-67c on the hotspot in Heaven becnhmark. So wow it was a poor piss job done from the factory. And thanks for the video it helped me alot ^^
Yo dude. I took the risk and took apart my 2080 super and i was kinda scared XD there was 2 wires 1 on each side and one was harder to get out then the other so i only took the easy out and let it flat on the cuttingboard.
Well the paste was so dry so i had some rubbing alcohol and used that and repasted it... IT STILL WORKS. And no more noise and it went from 80-89c to 67c when gaming :)
Btw i have a gigabyte and i can only read online that 99% has the same problem so im glad that i took the chance to do it :) Thx for a nice video, you saved my day.

i have the aorus and we are definitely a lot of people having the issue, + temp limit makes the fan goes to 4000rpm which sounds like a jet engine for a few second
I've gone from 75 degrees Celsius to 62, and from 105 degrees hot spot to 75.
I have used Noctua NT-H2 as thermal paste and as thermal pads Gelid GP-Ultimate 1mm for the vmem-vcore thin strip and memories 3 strips and 1.5mm for the long strip.

Holy crap. That what I have had for years now. So extremely annoying! It happens even in the soon 20 year old Neverwinter Nights game! As soon as I heard that fan noise I was like "yup, thats the problem".
Yeah, it was caked on good there. Some cleaning and re-pasting def helps!
my 2080ti ventus oc did the ramping up of the ventilators to 120% from the start , probably missing or bad thermal pads and dry paste ,
i just set a power limit and no more ramping , but for years i just pushed that card to no end , 120 core and 700 memory ,
but with the power limit , it just keeps going
haven't had the need to replace anything , so i didn't ...
card still works from the release date 20th September 2018

Yeah, I should have replaced the thermal pads as well. Maybe ill make an update video at some point. 1 year already!

Good guide 👍Might try this as well since my fans start to fire up constantly in Starfield and i had my 2080 since2018. Great game but not so optimized for PC players. I have a question. you removed the thermal paste from the GPU and then covered the entire GPU with new thermal paste. Then you also removed some dried thermal paste from the cooler. What did you do with the cooler afterwards? Does this also needs to be covered with paste or is the paste on the GPU enough? Never changed paste before hehe. Only disassembled the fans so i could clean them and the dust beneath. Will see if thermal paste does the trick first, or else i'm going to buy a brand new PC with 4090 and a watercooled system, since i hate high fan noise :D
Oh I see. Well, you just place some thermal paste on the GPU. And when you screw the cooler down, it will press down on the GPU and spread the thermal paste so it covers the GPU die. You dont have to apply thermal paste to both the GPU and the cooler part. :)
@@bjornark It worked fine 🙏. I probably put on to much paste as someone pointed out after seing my pics, but it works. The temp went down from 73 - 62 and improved FPS in starfield, but most important, the fans are not noisy anymore :D

i have 2060 FE more than 4 years old, 45 is the idle and hits 77 at full 100% load! Thinking of replacing the stock thermal paste, i have noctua nth1 but im kinda scared to open it because 2060 FE is hard to disassemble and assemble !
Get the right tools, and just take it slow. That is the most important part. Good luck. :)
What about thermal pads? Is it needed to change them out as well or can I go with those that are already in place? In case I need new pads, where can I order them?
Yeah, pads should be replaced as well (I did not do it in this video, should re-do it actually). See the comments down here, someone is suggesting good thermal pads.
Got a lightly used founders 2080 ti. Thought it wouldn’t need a repaste but when I did it make an almost 10deg difference.
But now I have an aio on it and it stays around 64c when gaming
I need to redo this on mine. It has started to be noisy again.
@@bjornark So what you're seeing is the pump out affect which happens more with GPU due to high hot spot, imo, don't use the none thick paste - stick to high viscosity, also most paste will dry over most time so phase change paste is the new thing, but hard to find a genuine one at that. I'm thinking about risking to put more thermal pad around the die, so keep that part of metal plate cooler to allow better flow so the die can transfer more heat quickily; it's all about heat flow speed (I use the analogy, don't clog heat like clogging the toilet).
so weird, my hotspot is triggering the 3rd fan and sometimes my fancurve when not doing anything and doesn't show anything happening in afterburner, cus the cards temp readings are fine (albite 3½ year old slightly dusty heat bonus of a couple degrees) but hotspot reading in gpu-z is like 20-30 degrees hotter even hitting thermal throttling on heavy/max load. prayge repasting will help
ok, now running kombustor for 10min straight the hotspot is just 12-15degrees (75) above the normal sense temps that sit at 60 ish. rather then hotspot hitting 90 degrees and getting throttled down to 1650mhz

Hello, I hope you can help me, I have the same model of GPU, I just changed the thermal paste, I used a thermal gryzzly kryonaut (12.5KW) but at idle, its temperature reaches 55°C, and if I disconnect the fans, it reaches 70 °C, this is at rest, that is, the 0db mode can never be activated, since it is always hot, what can I do? I applied just enough thermal paste, not too much and not too little. Running the Heaven Benchmark (or playing Doom Eternal) my temperatures reach 72° (very good), my temp problem is on the windows desktop, sorry for my english but I used translator
Try to reattach the cooler, make sure you dont overtighten the screws, and screw them in loosely first and tighten them in an X-pattern. Hope it helps!
Hello, thanks for your answer, I was able to solve my problem, I was pretty sure that it was not a problem of screws or thermal paste since I have many years of experience and I know the techniques to tighten the screws and to apply thermal paste, in the end The problem was the bios, I had a modified bios which meant that it was always at a minimum frequency of 1350mhz, even if nothing was being done, in the end I flashed the bios and put the original one on it, now I have temperatures of 40° (my room is quite hot and where I currently live is very hot so it's pretty cool temps), thank you very much for your help
You only redid the paste, any thoughts on replacing the thermal pads? My thought is to get from Komplett as Elkjøp most probably won’t have pads in stock in store, but would you recommend me to look into import pads? There is no longer any dedicated PC parts store in my city and traveling to Oslo for thermal pads seems not cost effective. I reused the pads I had on my 1070, but I always thought it would be best to put in new ones, and now with a “new” card, that is also starting to show age, new pads?
Yeah see other comments under this video for product suggestions. Pads should be replaced as well. I guess you could order them online. There are little specal-PC shops in Norway.

What is the program that shows FPS and GPU usage in game?
It is MSI afterburner.
You should try phase-change material Honeywell PTM7950. It comes in as a sheet, lasts longer, performs works better than traditional pastes and there is no pump-out effect. For the power section (vrm) and vrams, I advise you to apply thermal putty Upsiren UX Pro.
It is also a good idea to do undervolting.

@@bjornark Yes, I have applied PTM7950 already in dozens of gaming laptops, graphics cards and in consoles. The results have always been good, it did not happen that temperatures or CPU/GPU clocking were worse than before its application.
Lenovo uses a similar material PTM7598 from Q4 2021 in the top Legion series laptops and NVidia in the RTX 4K series founders also gives phase change material.
And thermal putty is most often used by laptop manufacturers in their top gaming series, as well as crypto diggers in the days of digging through graphics cards replaced thermopads with thermal putty.
More and more tests are slowly starting to appear on YT. I suggest you check it out for yourself.

I used tough sturdy pastes on GPU's and laptops repairs before i knew about PTM. Kryonaut, NT-H1/2, MX-4 is paste for heatspreader desktop CPU's and doesn't last very long on direct-core chips when temp hits around the 80'c regions. 5:30 that's pump-out.
I also switched to putty, the good ones: Mostly U6 Pro AlieX version and TH-930, K5 Pro performs like a cr@ppy cheap thermal pad and starts to boil on modern temperatures. Good thermal pads are also expensive for a silly 120mm strip and putty is universal and ensures good heatsink contact on the GPU-chip allowing for a thinner PTM/Paste layer.
For paste: MX-6, GD-2 from ali, Gelid GC Extreme, Arctic Silver 5, Thermalright TFX are some of the better options, thin layer is advisable.
Hey man you want to change thermal pads too on that gpu. I have the same gpu, my temp was 78c after 1min playing the game, 107c hotspot(probably vrm) and 104c memory temp and this was to 100% fans speed. So you want to take a look at them too, to check memory temps use GPUZ version 2.44.0 (new version will not show you memory temp on rtx 2000 so use this one). So you gpu is still not safe if you did not take a look at this temps. After changing thermal pads(Odyssey pads) and paste (Thermagic ZF-12 EX) my temp while playing games is 57-58 but I use silent bios and set fans to 50% when playing games. My other temps are max 80c for hotspot and vrm is like 74c, probably I would get the same results on performance bios.
You are probably right, I should order some new thermal pads and replace them as well. Checked the temp now in WoW with GPUZ 2.44.0 and hot spot was 89,3 max and memory 88,6 max. Not bad for about 30-35% fan speed would you say? Anyways its good advice. Thanks! :)

hotspot is the gpu die not related to the rest of the card ur card with those temps was crap die contact. the hotspot refers to the hotest part of the die as there are multiple thermal sensors baked inside it nvidia and amd the same deal only evga cards have temp sensors on the pcb (icx cards)
Just use a soft brush with alcohol to clean the sides. You get it completely clean without damaging anything.

he did it all wrong. DO NOT EVER use an abrasive rag on a video card ever. or any pcb for that matter. Always use an electronics cleaner spray, this will do it all with out your touching or scraping anything at all. I have done 20 of these. plan on using 2 full cans. I use wd40 contact cleaner or crc contact cleaner., it stinks so do it outside. let dry for 72 hours. then re assemble. the pcb will look like it just rolled off the factory floor. perfectly clean
Been doing this for 20+ years and it works good. That rag is for this type of application (i think so at least). Just use a good amount of isopropyl alcohol. Your differing opinion is allowed of course.
What he used is not really any issues. Most people use a coffee filter to avoid statics.
You realize that those cloths are for cleaning windows right? So no way that's "abrasive".

he could have just sprayed the entire card and cooling system in 1/3rd the time and had a much better solution.

Nah, Maybe it could have been somewhat thinner but this is no problem. Its been working just fine for 9 months. And it will pressure out.
