But if you ever wanted to give it a try, I would first suggest Opeth, who are close to the harder stuff. Then, maybe Iced Earth with the song seven headed whore and The Plagues of Babylon. Unleash the Archers have a song called The General of the Dark Army that's a bit heavier as well.

I feel like power metal basically took the lighter classic (especially Rainbow, and Dio in general) and some NWOBHM (especially Iron Maiden), and added the speed and complexity of thrash (and sometimes even death). It is definitely probably the least heavy or brutal subgenre of contemporary metal, but I do not really see an issue with that. It shows that metal as a genre is flexible enough to accomodate a wide range of styles and tastes, which is key to its overall longevity.

@@2910karlijn they absolutely do romanticize war. Sometimes. They also absolutely show how truly awful and horrible it is. Sometimes. Final solution, wehrmacht and basically most ww1 themed songs are really somber and dramatic and show the horrors of war but then you have stuff about kicking nazi ass or the whole "heroes" and "last stand" album concepts where they're more upbeat and focused on honour and glory because you can't really have a song that is literally just a clinical recap of events, you either have to hype them up or stress the horrific consequences they had. I fucking love them and i don't think they're doing a disservice to the knowledge of history (if anything they're helping, there are probably lots of events people only know about thanks to them) and i don't think anyone will actually come out of one of their concerts thinking war is cool and stuff like that, but i think it's more honest to say that they do glorify and romanticize some stuff, particularly when it's about single people instead of events. (If any journalist is reading this, no you dumb fuck, this does not mean they glorify the awful parts like the fucking holocaust, they literally tell people not to jump around or be happy when they play the final solution because it's not the right attitude to have towards the subject).

In terms of power metal bands, Dragonforce uses growls every great once in a while, and Epica (okay, they're not exclusively power metal) use them pretty regularly to the point of being important to their style.

Ryu 5150 uses growls and throat singing, they're a Dragonforce inspired Japanese circle but with more range, variety, and styles, from dark symphonic metal to Celtic & Japanese folk metal, also many arranges of music from the Touhou game series.

Ive grown to be a fan of both, but when I was a teenager I was an asshole who would make jokes about Dave getting the boot. Metallica was my favorite band before I found death metal. If you break it down to brutality, unrelenting, and technicality, Megadeth Rust In Peace is the thrash metal champion. However song structure, feel, and production Master of Puppets is the winner. They both deserve thier place and thats why Slayer Reign In Blood becomes the greatest thrash album of all time. You cant pick Rust over Master and vice versa.

One thing I would like to add about Sabaton, is that they tell everyones story. They sing about D-Day in Primo Victoria. They pay homage to war hero’s such as The Red Baron, and Sergeant York. They describe the horrors of war in songs like Great War and The Attack of The Dead Men.

Maybe it's coming up in a future episode (I'm binging these now because they're fucking awesome!), but I'm surprised that Pantera was practically overlooked in this episode. They completely changed the metal scene in the late 80's when thrash and glam were being pushed out by (ugh) grunge. Maybe there's a groove metal genre coming up - I hope so - Pantera deserves a huge mention.
How have i missed this series for so long? Glad the algorithm suggested it. It's fantastic!

There’s some power metal songs I’ve heard with much more rough, growl-y parts though not the full song is sung that way. Almost always it seems to be from the perspective of some sort of demon or high being. When Demons Awake by Rhapsody and Edge of the World by DragonForce come to mind.
It can actually be really good when done right.

Some very astute observations here, thanks.
One thing I will mention is that I don't think it's possible to categorise fans according to what they listen to. I love power metal, and have done since before there was a category for it. But that doesn't mean I don't also love thrash, black metal, death metal or anything else metal. Hell, I've even started listening to Jinjer and Lorna Shore, and I have no idea how to categorise them. But they certainly employ some of the more extreme vocal techniques.

Boy oh boy, I didn't know about that specific Sepultura lyric lmao. But as a brazilian, I can explain it: "died" should be replaced by "killed" (obviously), but it doesn't denote the same idea. In portuguese, the verb "morto", conveys the idea of "become dead", which doesn't make it explicit that one was killed by an individual. That being said, Max (or whoever wrote the lyrics) probably thought the verb "died" existed in english and just tried to translate "morto" directly ;b
EDIT: having watched episode 6, now I know why I'd never seen this lyric: it's not a Sepultura lyric lol, my explanation still stands though
