      Its actually based upon a real historical moment. Tolkien, being a student of history would have doubtlessly known of it.
      The Siege of Vienna 1683, marked the single largest cavalry charge in human history, larger even then what is shown here. 18,000 heavy cavalry - led by 3000 of the near mythical Winged Hussars of Poland. When the allied troops arrived to the besieged city, the walls had already broken, and the city was near lost.
      The defeat of the Ottoman Empire at that moment was one of the single most pivotal moments in human history. Quite possibly the most pivotal moment in Europe. It marked the end of the Ottoman Empire's expansion into Europe and set it on the road to collapse that would conclude over 250 years later. It cemented the ethnoreligous demographics of Europe pretty much forever. It was the single most disastrous defeat the empire ever suffered in nearly 700 years of existence.

    The scene with Denethor and Faramir in the beginning of this video is so well acted, you can see Faramir's heart breaking just by the look in his eyes. Apparently John Noble (playing Denethor) very generously gave David Wenham (Faramir) a compliment for his performance in the scene.

    • @evenmoor
      @evenmoor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Shelob was a descendant of Ungoliant, an absolutely enormous creature that is said to have come from the Darkness itself. Ungoliant was an ally of Sauron's master, the fallen Vala Morgoth. Her most defining attribute was her eternal hunger; she consumed the Two Trees that lit the world before the creation of the sun and moon, causing her to grow so vast that even Morgoth feared her. It is said that her insatiable hunger proved her undoing, and she ultimately consumed _herself._

    I love how Tolkien described Sam attacking shelob in the book (the giant spider).
    "No onslaught more fierce was ever seen in the savage world of beasts; where some desperate small creature armed with little teeth alone, will spring upon a tower of horn and hide that stands above its fallen mate."

    • @joescott8877
      @joescott8877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Absolutely! And then, a bit later, after brandishing the Phial of Galadriel, and quite miraculously bursting into Elvish, "a language he did not know,' Sam shouted at Shelob, "Now come, you filth! You've hurt my master, you brute, ands you'll pay for it." And then "...the glass blazed suddenly like a white torch in his hand. It flamed like a star...No such terror out of heaven had ever burned in Shelob's face before...the dreadful infection of light spread from eye to eye...Sam came on. He was reeling like a drunken man, but he came on..." Also recall that a bit earlier (in the book), when they were seemingly trapped by Shelob, FRODO also dared to confront the gigantic, disgusting spider. "Frodo, hobbit of the Shire, walked steadily down to meet the eyes." Anyone who HASN'T read these books..put down the tiktok and pick up the Tolkien!

    "...still Theoden gave no signal. At last he halted again. The City was now nearer. A smell of burning was in the air and the very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him.... Perhaps Theoden would quail, bow his old head, turn, and slink away to hide in the hills....
    ...At that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung up from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white..... then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great *boom*.
    At that sound the bent shape of the King sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:
    Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
    Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
    Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
    A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
    Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
    With that he seized a great horn from Guthlaf, his banner bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straight away all the horns were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains....
    Suddenly the King cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind.... but he outpaced it. After him thundered the Knights of his house, but he was ever before them..... Theoden could not be overtaken..... the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins.... like a god of old.... His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror overtook them, and they fled, and died..... And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."

  • @tehdipstick
    @tehdipstick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    Just to give some context for Denethor, his pessimism and defeatist attitude is the result of several things. First off, was frequently making use of a palantir, the same kind of dark crystal ball Saruman used that Pippin looked into earlier in this movie. He was originally using it to spy on the forces of Mordor, thinking it would be a good tool in helping Gondor win battles, but as with Saruman his use of the palantir was discovered by Sauron, who in turn used it to constantly show him visions of Gondor falling. Denethor ended up growing increasingly mad and desperate, and this was further exacerbated with the death of Boromir.
    Denethor did love Faramir, but with his mind constantly clouded with fear, bitterness and desperation, he lost sight of what his son meant to him. When Faramir is returned, seemingly dead, Denethor loses the last bit of hope he had. That's why he was so eager to burn himself and Faramir, even though Pippin told him his son was still alive. He believed all was lost and that they would die in the battle anyway. The last wistful look Denethor gives Faramir before running off while on fire is a look of regret. That's the moment Gandalf was talking about when he said Denethor would realize he loves Faramir before the end. He sees that while it's too late for himself it might not be too late for Faramir, and he feels remorse for the way he's treated him.

      Theoden is THE man. He is compared to "one of the Gods of old" (Valar) while leading the Rohirrim into battle in Gondor. The movies just take him down so much. Movie Theoden is an utter weakling compared to book Theoden. Book Theoden is a master warrior that even with his extreme age isn't all that much far removed from the founder of Rohan, Eorl himself. One thing is important for those who haven't read the books to know...
    Yes, Denethor did all those things, but the films made him out to be just a plain terrible ruler and person without any kind of context. Actually, he was a man of high intellect and capability and while he might have been greedy for the Ring to come to Gondor, he hadn't lost the plot quite that early. What had happened though, is he had one of the palantirs in his possession and he used it frequently to spy out what was going on in Middle Earth. Like Pippin, this brought him under the gaze of Sauron (who had the Minas Ithil palantir) but unlike Pippin, he was strong enough - at least he thought - to withstand the pressure of the Eye. However, although Sauron could not break him directly with his will, he managed to twist Denethor's thoughts by showing him only what he wanted him to see, essentially all negative things like (from his point of view) the coming of Aragorn to take back the Throne of Gondor, the hugeness of the Mordor armies and so on. Eventually, Denethor lost hope and considered the Ring the only means of saving Gondor. Once Faramir had made his decision to let Frodo go, it was the end of all hope for Denethor, especially coming as it did soon after he learned of the death of his favourite son, Boromir. Although he was cruel to Faramir, he did underneath all that still love him; so when Faramir came back from Osgiliath nearly dead, that was the final straw that broke Denethor's mind and turned him into the unhinged madman who would try to burn himself and his son alive.
    Peter Jackson understandably didn't have the time to show all that, plus he took greater visual steps to amplify Denethor's heartlessness - like the scene where he's eating tomatoes or something similar and it looks like blood is running out of his mouth, at the same time as his son is facing down death.

The speech, the charge with one of the most beautiful musical scores ever written, the way all the music stops when the armies of Rohan clash with the orcs to leave its place to the grim sounds of battle for long, long seconds. It's perfection.

    Best part of the song that Pippin sings is that the actor wrote it himself when a scheduling error meant the intended writer couldn't do so. So not only did he sing it, but he wrote it for that moment as well.

    over the past years ever since its release I’ve watched this for the millionth time. though I was only 9 years old when the third movie released it has imprinted in my head throughout my entire childhood up until now I’m a 27 years old adult, and over the past years too for each time I rewatch all 3 I still shed tears on different scenes, it changes everytime. one of the many scenes that always, always bring tears to my eyes is Theodon’s speech before they marched to the death (as what he said). at that moment I could feel the their fear and courage at the same time, going forward to their uncertain fate only holding on to a small hope inside themselves.

    Can’t wait for pt 3, the very first time I saw this theaters I was on the edge of my seat. The Battle of Pelennor Fields is one of the most epic parts of a movie I’ve ever seen! I can remember just like at Helmsdeep, all seems lost until the sun rose and a horn sounds in the distance announcing the arrival of The Rohirrim. The music, the sounds of the cheers as Theoden gives his speech still gives me chills! I’d actually pay to see these movies in the theater again.

    Fun Fact: 6,000 riders took part in the Rohirrim charge, it looks epic. Imagine that on September 12, 1683, during the Battle of Vienna, in which the Ottoman (Now Turkish) army in the number of about 300,000 attacked Vienna then controlled by the Republic of Poland (Now Poland) to help the attacked city, Jan 3 Sobieski came to help with 20,000 riders in with these 8,000 Hussars (Considered the most deadly cavalry in history), it wiped out 67,000 Ottoman troops that confronted the horsemen in half an hour. Rumor has it that J.R.R. Tolkien has somewhat related to the Rohirrim charge with the one at Vienna.

    The rohiram charge is one of the most epic if not the most epic moment in cinema history. Avengers endgame? Never heard of it. The chanting of death before they charge is even more powerful when you realize the reason for it. To summarize sauran essentially wanted everyone to fear it to make it seem like there was an oblivion after death that it was nothing but misery. Them chanting death is in completely defiance of that fear, that no matter what happens we will not be afraid of what is to come. Amazing movie, makes me wanna rewatch it for the 50th time....

    Only just realised the irony of when Pippin says " It isn't all that dangerous" about his blade when he draws it to show Eowyn . His blade is the one that actually kills the Witch King. When they are on the Barrows and Aragorn (Tom Bombadil in the books if I remember) saves them from the Ringwraiths they find some daggers too. These are Daggers of Westernesse which were made for fighting forces sent from Angmar. During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Merry stabbed the Witch-king in the back of the knee with his dagger, which enabled Éowyn to thrust her sword into his face . The dagger that Merry stabbed into the Witch-king had a power beyond mere metal, for it broke the spell that held the spirit's body together. So while the blade was created centuries before to battle against the forces of Angmar, it contributed to the demise of the Witch-king. :) Still so much you can get from rewatching these films.

    Eucatastrophe: A eucatastrophe is a sudden turn of events in a story which ensures that the protagonist does not meet some terrible, impending, and very plausible and probable doom. The writer J. R. R. Tolkien coined the word by affixing the Greek prefix eu, meaning good, to catastrophe, the word traditionally used in classically inspired literary criticism to refer to the "unraveling" or conclusion of a drama's plot. For Tolkien, the term appears to have had a thematic meaning that went beyond its literal etymological meaning in terms of form. In his definition as outlined in his 1947 essay "On Fairy-Stories", eucatastrophe is a fundamental part of his conception of mythopoeia. Though Tolkien's interest is in myth, it is connected to the gospel; Tolkien calls the Incarnation of Christ the eucatastrophe of "human history" and the Resurrection the eucatastrophe of the Incarnation.

    Something the books brought up but wasn't really explained in the movie is that Denethor also had a palantir and had been using it. Sauron tried to use it to force Denethor under his control like he did Saruman but Denethor managed to withstand although it did weaken him mentally and he became a bit paranoid and extreme. Not really a defense on how he treated his son, but it does explain some of his actions.

    He's not saying Pippin is a coward, he's just saying that he would be out of his depth and not stand a chance. A pretty respectful take from a hardened warrior who basically thinks it's a kid going into an apocalyptic, end of worlds, battle.
