There’s a side quest where a merchant feels like he’s not done anything right in his career, and is about to throw himself off a cliff. You save him by telling him about the economical demand of *J E L L Y P E N O S*
This game is something else. I saw that attack and was like WTF?!

I actually want a loop of that. I just find it so funny. I keep coming back to this review because I love octopath and seeing a fun positive review like the one I would make if I had a capture card felt great but also because it just cracks me up.

dunkey suck at Rpg clearly just look at speedrun they finish all 4 chapters of a character in just 45 minutes
The only real grinding I’ve had to do is for a certain postgame boss (if you know, YOU KNOW)
Might try said boss again when my party hits level 75 or so (even then might go to 80)

Dunkey doesn't know how to read. Octopath's weakness system is pretty similar to Persona but he couldn't figure out why an enemy that had a weak to dagger sign didn't die to a sword swing with no bp and no resources. There are plenty of barebones turnbased rpgs, but Octopath is not one of them.
It'd be like in Persona if you just mashed attack and wondered why the system was so slow. You just gotta use your brain and realize he's being dishonest.

TheShootpark56 I told the folks at gamestop that I was looking for a new switch game. They suggested this, even though its $60. I bought it and played the demo. Immediately opened the wrapping on the box and got to it after the three hours were up. No regrets
Don't do it.. it's an overhyped mediocre game.. you know a review is bad when it doesn't mention any negative aspect of the game..
And believe me, this game has a lot of flaws..
If you like RPGs, it’s a must have. The battle mechanics are some of the best I’ve ever seen in a turn-based RPG.
If you only play RPGs for the story, this game would be “just okay.” Honestly, there were SNES/PS1 RPGs with far less content, but you’d be better off playing Final Fantasy VI with only Gau in your party.
If you dislike turn-based RPGs, this game is probably not for you. It’s got the best mechanics, but you’ll still find yourself in 30-minute boss battles and more time later in the game deciding on your favorite buffs/debuffs. If seeing an attack deal 10-20 times its normal damage doesn’t excite you, then this isn’t for you.
The story and the way it is conveyed are TERRIBLE..
Graphics are bad even for a retro game..
Its battle system is ok but nothing we haven't already seen in the past really... Also, it is a bit grindy, which, I find bad as I would prefer the battles to be more challenging rather than just time consuming..
Its music is awesome, too bad it is wasted on this game..
Full price like it is an AAA title?? Not a fuckin chance.. I wil never buy this shit..
The only good thing is that this game proved for yet one more time that there is an audience out there despairate for a new old school turn based RPG..

Beat the game after play for 102 hours, and I can confidently say that I never once got bored of the game and had to stop playing, I'd only stop when I pass out from forgetting to sleep. It sucks that some people might not give it a chance due to Dunkey's video on it, but for those who enjoy the game hopefully you can agree with me. Octopath sequel is pretty much confirmed seeing how successful the game is.

Well they could do the final fantasy way. Story may not be connected at all but still retains the same form in gameplay.

I've been wondering what all of my favorite content creators have been doing and then they all release videos about octopath traveler, each with a part in the beginning about how they have spent like 50+ hours in it. Mystery solved :P

“One way to play octopath traveller is to recruit the other seven characters and play their beginning stories one by one if you’re a completionist s*** like me.” ...The game literally tells you to go find the other characters and see their stories as well. It says to do that *immediately* after you complete your protagonist’s first chapter.

But for real, nice review Yakko, I trust your opinion on JRPGs as someone who clearly plays them a lot (and isn't inherently bias against them).
Me too, its just that dunkey dosent generally like these types of games and prefers other games like platformers and collectibales like banjo kazooie
It's ultimately a JRPG for JRPG fans, Not for everyone but if it's your kinda game you'll have a good time with it

Well, Dunkey said he didn't like jrpgs AND turn-based combat, but it turns out, he liked Persona 5.

I . . . didn't even realize losing a duel was an option. I used Allure to bring his mom over to slap some sense into him. Really cool to see how many different ways there are to complete sidequests.

Great review pointing out lots of different factors that get ignored by most other reviewers. The incredible attention to detail in the game is one of the things that elevates it to masterpiece levels. The other one being the music, of course.
H’annit was insufferable to me but when she dealt 60k damage in a turn as warmaster she won over my heart.

There's also different ways to go about doing the side quests! Yes you can purposely lose to that guy so that he wins the lady's heart... or you can guide his mother to him and she will scold him for pursuing the lady when she's not interested. (Also, the dogs have boxes of information too, it's GREAT)

and then she rages and on hit kills your whole party,
next day you discover an exploit/OP tactic in which she kills herself.

Ok but I just really like that after completing specific side quest in the game you can go to this “final dungeon” that actually connects all of the stories of each character to this final story. Don’t wanna spoil too much but I just don’t want anyone missing that extra little piece of the game!!

A cool thing about this game is that a bunch of side quests have multiple solutions.
For example, that guy who you lost the duel too? In my game, I went just a bit south to find his mother, made her follow me with Primrose, and brought her to her son. She basically gives her son an earful, and then drags him away from the woman whom he has been trying to woo.
The soundtrack alone made me buy this game

Just picked this game up for half off on Steam, never played a JRPG before but this video made me want the game back in about June. Finally got it and started playing today and I am thoroughly enjoying it so far (not too far in though just finished first character prologue)

Iury Noã Miranda dunkey’s already stated that he cant properly review jrpgs since he pretty much hates everything about them. Besides, almost all of dunkey’s reviews aren’t meant to be taken seriously. (Just look at his Origins video, where he showcased bugs that almost never happen as if theyre a common occurrence). Above all, he’s a comedy channel, so you should start viewing him that way.
At least the Assassins Creed Video was funny. But his octopath video just fell flat. Its just plain hating on the game.
But i see Dunkey's chanel as a comedy one, like i said in my own comment, you take Dunkviews as serious, and the Bookworn video showed his real content, the problem is, that video is just a bad Dunkview, the only joke in that entire video is the "Your Excellency" one, the rest is just him using Octopath to make his points look more valid, i'm not an idiot who thinks "if you don't like JRPGS don't play them" but there is 0 comedy in him taking three turns to kill an enemy with only a party member and not using the mechanics of the game, it's just him not being honest with the viewer, the Assasin's Creed video are bugs, something wrong with the code, not attending your spectations on everything being Persona 5 is wrong with your script , being a comedy chanel don't make him imune to criticism, especially if there are no jokes in he video.

Square Enix took a page out of Atlus's book when it came to making this artstyle. Ever since I first saw project Octopath Traveler at the big Switch presentation, it always reminded me of the PS3's hidden gem; 3D Dot Game Heroes
This video was really fun, good job! I was so disappointed that dunkey’s video would be 90% of people’s first impressions, this video represents the game way better! In a just world we’d swap the two videos views :)
This was a great game, and surprisingly one of the least grindy JRPGs (and one of the shortest) I've ever played.
Took me 100 hours to do EVERYTHING (at least, see all story, collect the best gear and beat the Final Dungeon) and only maybe 6 of those hours were dedicated grinding.. most of what I needed just came from doing all the quests I could each chapter, and getting a few lucky Bewildering Grace rolls for 100x experience.
