I watch ALOT of Heavy Equipment videos and you are right about unshared knowledge is lost knowledge! A book can tell you how to do a thing but being shown how to do a thing is PRICELESS! I'm the kinda fella that can read about it in a book all day but until I get my hands on it that's when everything clicks! THANK YOU SIR FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE!
Really enjoy watching Rob work, he explains things as he goes and you can tell he’s a smart man. Also love that u have a dedicated camera person, unlike some and can actually see what you’re doing without getting dizzy.
Rob, these are the type of tutorial video we like, you couldn’t do enough off them. A step by step on repair to Tim’s fender on 389 would be great to see step by step. This is a great format, really catches my interest, many will agree I’m sure.
So...engineer and CNC shop owner here. Former racer, engine builder, and designed/cut parts for race engine applications. You sir are someone I admire. I know a seasoned wrench when I see one. One thing I teach to the younger vo-tech kids is there is no school that teaches experience.......other than someone with that experience, and you better be taking notes! A piece of paper means dick to me. You do a good job of verbally hitting the hot topics but otherwise just showing it. The major advice I give to the younger ones (I'm not even old yet) is TAKE YOUR TIME....I had literally mostly completed a V twin DOHC engine when my brain realized I put a piston in backwards. Had I spun that engine, it would have hurt financially.
I’m about your age now and if I had a dollar for every time I catch myself grumbling “I can’t see” while turning wrenches I would have enough money to retire and eat moon pies all day long.😂
Retire old timer here it’s good that you’re trying to show these young guys how to do it. I had one kid and shop with me. They went to a diesel college and kept telling me I’m doing it the wrong way, but when he did his first engine in our shop they had to come in to get it running old school Good job Rob enjoy your video
I love the detail Rob gets into on these Caterpillars. I rebuilt my 3406B by the book. It was my first diesel. I like to see the differences is in the engines. Knowledge, pass it on! Thanks!
Great Video, nice job Rob. As a older Diesel mechanic I have never heard about painting head gaskets, however I know you are talking from experience. I'll have to try it on the next head I install. Thanks Rob.
Man you know a lot. Back in the time when I was a young boy 15 years old- I watch- and help the neighbor take a engine out a car rebuild it and put it back in - we was in the back of his house. I learned a lot. I showed & tech my sons & daughter the basics. Good work - keep your videos coming 👍👍
Best explanation of this cam gear arrangement I've seen. I love the wisdom and experience on display here. Thank you Sir, you're a legend and master of what you do. Thank you from London,UK
Thanks for sharing this amazing content with us Rob I think it’s great you doing this stuff like our hearts beat like your on autopilot and getting it done in awesome fashion keep up the awesome job and I’ll see you in the next amazing video!!!
Always a pleasure watching a fellow with you background of old school knowledge Rob you make things look easy but to the real sense they are on Cat motors if one just takes time to learn from a GREAT person like yourself keep up the good video's enjoy everyone you wonderful 👍 people put out
Excellent Rob - old school mechanics on rebuilding and engine - what you call play between two mating gears we call backlash in the UK. Can you do more video like this. Cheers Paul from the Uk.
Will rob I've been watching channel for a while I seen you on Tim Gentry's channel I switched over yours and I really enjoy it thank you probably content you put into it and your time enjoy watching them see that's all I got to do I got COPD real bad I can't get out of the house That's all I do watch watch videos on my phone so thank you very much for your video buddy your friend Billy
Instead of painting head gaskets etc with gold spray paint I would highly recommend trying that aluminized silver spray paint like some transmission shops used to paint the exterior of transmission cases and or the paint some junkyards have painted used transmissions with. The stuff has a high amount of aluminum particulate in the paint (and far more than gold paint) I first learned about using that aluminized spray paint from a buddy of mine who raced Top Fuel Harley and also land speed raced. He would spay a medium wet coat on paint on the cylinder jug and cylinder head solely as a head gasket when serving the engine on his bikes between runs. I have been using aluminized spray paint on head and intake gaskets for the last 20 years
Unless I'm mistaken I believe in Tim's video I think that he said that either Tim or you were the one's that told the driver to just drive the truck back to your shop and you would fix it there at your shop??? That it should make it, at the end of the day it's up to the driver but if my mechanic told me that it would probably be ok I would have done the same thing
Greetings from Northern Ontario, I am a subscriber and really enjoy your channel. Rob, you seem to me to be a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about all things related to trucks .You have a very interesting complex and I would love to meet you and tour your facility if I'm ever in your area. Keep up the great videos.
I need to make my 34 million a year just like the CEO's. GM's CEO made 54 million last year. You explain what she does to make 54 million a year? If it wasn't for mechanics the CEO couldn't get to work. You couldn't get to work. Doctors couldn't get to work so mechanics need a pay increase. A SERIOUS pay increase.
I know we would get along great my type of people . I'd bring my own bay box and hammock, but I need a fourth back surgery. When I can I make truck parts out of stainless, stuff you can't buy off the shelf. Keep the videos coming!
thank you for the education..u never to old to learn something you never have done..rob,you did a great job on this and its why i try to watch your channel to learn anything..thanks for the video and i will be waiting for the next one..phil from central illinois..c15 cat driver every day..only way to fly..take care..
Hello there. We use a mixed bag of tools. Snap on sockets and ratchets. Mack spanners and wrenches. Bahco adjustables. Ridged siltsons. Blue point large adjustables made in USA not China. And a load of British and German tools. We have tools for every job and if we haven't we make them. We do Engines up and repair trucks, tractors and farm machinery. We are in our retirement and never been has busy. I'm 69 and my boss is 84.
Liked the " make smoke" reference . Haven't heard that term since my time with the tug boats . Nothing like the sound / smell of a D 399 Cat - doing a pre lube then the air starter hits and SHE'S ALIVE .
Rob, it's always a pleasure to watch the SH Tube channel. The crew there never disappoints always delivering truth and a great learning experience. I am so thankful that Tim from Gentry and Sons shared your information, and I became a follower. I actually just ordered my 1st SH Tube shifter this morning. Good content like this deserves major support. Thank you all there, 'the team'@SHTube!
Hi Robert I follow Tim Gentry so I started following u on ur channel I enjoyed watching u rebuild the cat motor for Rooster ur videos is very educational ❤
I’m 78 now and will probably never tear apart another engine and was not familiar with that “painting the head gasket” trick and I lived in Florida for a time in the 60’s with some “good old boys” as friends who were also mechanics but never shared this info with me.
I have a friend of mine who is exactly like Rob, 3rd generation owner operator mostly works on trucks now, they are a treasure and hard to find a dying breed.
Verry informative video Rob. I wish I lived closer to you. I could use some of your knowledge. I will keep watching your videos for now. Thanks for doing what you do.
Congratulations 2 that man pulling on that torque 🔧 🛠
Rob seems like he’d be a great teacher. I’d love to come work with him and the SH Tube crew. Y’all seem like y’all are down to earth folk.
Love watching you work Sir you are a Craftsman! Seriously don't understand why your channel doesn't have 100k subscribers!!! ❤
It will , there still a young channel .
We need to😮share the channel more, then it get more subscribers, that’s why, if they did more of this kind of blogs , it might convince more people to subscribe, thanks BigAl California.

Really enjoy watching Rob work, he explains things as he goes and you can tell he’s a smart man. Also love that u have a dedicated camera person, unlike some and can actually see what you’re doing without getting dizzy.
Best Cat man in the country! Like watching how you work on trucks. You have knowledge some people dream about.
Or lie about 😊
Bet robs forgot more than most will ever learn.
Rob, these are the type of tutorial video we like, you couldn’t do enough off them.
A step by step on repair to Tim’s fender on 389 would be great to see step by step.

Robert is a master mechanic for sure. Love watching him work.

Awesome video Rob. I always like watching a master at work.👍👍👍
Don’t lie to her Rob you paint gasket gold to match the kittykat gold motor 😂😂😂😂
I really hope that roberts knowledge is being passed down because if it's not people are missing out, this is valuable info.awesome work.
Poor guy pulling the torque wrench like I need a break.😂
I’m about your age now and if I had a dollar for every time I catch myself grumbling “I can’t see” while turning wrenches I would have enough money to retire and eat moon pies all day long.😂

amazing job on the brand new head
Love the way Robert explains how to do it right. And if you haven’t set the timing before you should use the tool that they have. Nice job
There’s a lot of experience in that ol head!! Hopefully some younger guy is soaking up Robb’s experience!
It always amazes me, you do twice the mechanical work that Timmy G does, and you are always clean, and Tim is covered in grease and oil! Lol!
I love the detail Rob gets into on these Caterpillars. I rebuilt my 3406B by the book. It was my first diesel. I like to see the differences is in the engines. Knowledge, pass it on!
Thanks!

Great video, yall could do more like this, did I see a Williams wrench in there. Asome
Great Video, nice job Rob. As a older Diesel mechanic I have never heard about painting head gaskets, however I know you are talking from experience. I'll have to try it on the next head I install. Thanks Rob.
What rob don’t know about mechanics on a truck engine like cats and Cummins not worth knowing he’s a genius a very smart man on engines
you've probably worked on these things longer than i have been alive but painting a headgasket still sounds crazy to me
Man you know a lot. Back in the time when I was a young boy 15 years old- I watch- and help the neighbor take a engine out a car rebuild it and put it back in - we was in the back of his house. I learned a lot. I showed & tech my sons & daughter the basics. Good work - keep your videos coming 👍👍
