From central Berkshire county here, and figured I’d history ramble for anyone who cares: if you wanna see Pittsfield in its prime, you gotta look back on photos and videos of its hay day sadly. From what I hear (because I was born later on) It use to actually be a pretty bustling little city, with a lot to do for the location. There was enough of a population here that there was even a cable trolly on North Street, and a massively successful department store called “England Brothers”. Tons of drive in theaters, and entertainment venues to boot; so it was a destination. Sometime around the late 70s, GE the largest factory employer of the area started closing down; and it basically started a slow downward spiral for the whole town. I’m not joking; if you look up Pittsfield MA on urban dictionary, it’s paired with the ‘elephant crashing through a glass roof’ analogy. I really wish I could have seen it, when it was a place to see. I dunno if it’ll ever recover; but one can hope. Also just wanted to say love the channel too!You never know what you’ll find when you pin that map.

Hi everyone my name is Nancy Kronick. My husband's family has lived for years in Pittsfield and I have grown to love it there. I am a fiction writer and if you like a good mystery I have written one based in Pittsfield called, ''Dreams of Revenge''. It is now free on Kindle.

I live about two hours East and I have lots of family here, my dad is originally from here. As a matter of fact, my grandfather, great uncle, and great grandfather built hundreds of homes and businesses all throughout Pittsfield. The history of this town is amazing. I could go on and on and on. There isn't too much out in this part of Massachusetts, except a lot of nature. Southern Berkshire county is gorgeous, definitely worth a visit. Thanks for sharing, very cool!

I grew up in Pittsfield in its heyday and continue to visit. Pittsfield is the county seat for Berkshire County. The city is slowly remaking itself as an artist hangout. I hope it works. Churches! Yes lots of them. You have to understand that there were a lot of different nationalities that settled in Pittsfield. So you had churches for the Polish, Italian, Irish citizens.

Pittsfield is a City in the center of Berkshire County. GE was the biggest employer for many years. They left in 1992. It is more of a tourist place now. You missed out on the Colonial theater where there are plays near the museum. Lots of great restaurants on the Main Street. To the south there is Lenox and Stockbridge with the Red Lion Inn and Norman Rockwell Museum. To the North is Williamstown, a playhouse, Williams College and The Clark Art Institute. North Adams has Mass MOCA a modern Art Museum. All over Berkshire County there are hiking trails. It’s a beautiful place to live.

Hey! My home town! Pretty good place to visit, not so much to live im afraid lol rising crime rate, declining economy and population. A lot of areas like downtown and the common as you saw have been renovated in the past few years. With declining jobs the city has been trying to revitalize by focusing on attracting tourism. It hasn't been all that effective in my opinion. There's a fair bit of history and some stuff to see, but 3 -5 days in this town is enough to see just about all of it really.

When GE outsourced its factories to So. Korea in the 70s (Jack Welch lived in Pittsfield at that time), this one company city lost 35k jobs and died. Gangs and drugs flooded in from NYC because of its location. Lexox (Tanglewood/BSO) is next town over. GE still has a plastics complex and USN torpedo facility here. In the 60s Pittsfield was the 3rd wealthiest city in Mass. No jobs left. Just retirees from GE and companies since closed down.

You REALLY need to actually go to Pittsfield. I'm shocked there was anyone actually out on the street. Raised there and the next town over. What was once a great town to grow up in 70s and 80s has been decimated and it's far from actually charming when you're in the city itself.

Sadly TRUE!!! I didn't know anything about Pittsfield but was given a false narrative by police when I called to inquire about real estate I was considering investing in and they boasted Linden Street as being "totally fine, nice neighborhood!", my investor & I arrived and he turned his car right around and said he works in areas of the Bronx that are a palace compared to this place Pittsfield!!!", (he's a NYC investigator by profession), needless to say we encountered nothing but denial, corruption, nothing that will turn things around or face what is. The engineer I knew who moved out there also gave a false impression of how affordable it is and la la landish, sure he has a blast & makes a killing because he has a higher income lifestyle that's highly unusual for a city that has over half the population on govt assistance, and he is affording leisures most out there couldn't even consider while he rents out property's being the slum Lord magnet city we realized it's being turned into & section 8 catered, awful mismanaging!!! One afternoon and you get enough of a gloomy eye full of depressed, dilapidated decline & troubled lowly types, drugs, unsafe feel, run down & SAD. What worsens it is actually to see the incredible ballet theater & book shops, museums, a charming common with a fountain, the city design is actually impressive, this all makes it so much more heart breaking & somehow bizarre? Because you see what once was, you see the potential, but it's struggling to survive & fit in with this mish-mosh of ugly elements welcomed into the city by corrupt authorities. I experienced & witnessed this first hand. The police didn't seem to want better and catered to the bad elements, recipe for disaster. Political crooks power hungry with no real leadership skills or determined intentions, lack of ambition. A lot of people in "authority" are what's wrong. I was told by an agency that they intentionally attracted low quality folks from NYC with promises of better welfare benefits, Mass Health, food stamps, housing, usually not the best clientele for your city nor tax generators but rather tax eaters and this brought with it all the crime, safety threats, gun violence, drugs. My guess is this was a an initiative under the guise of "diversity", to import votes.? I can't see how else anyone would do such strategy unless they secretly were on mission to give that city it's final blow & gaurantee its destruction. I was supposed to work to clean out the harmful pollutants, I am educated and took classes are various schools including Cal Tech. I could not find anywhere to live. So the city was at a loss for what I could contribute, better environment & health for the populous and much needed tax revenue & Economic support as I planned to employ everyone in house to upgrade my property and buy locally. I knew someone who considered General Dynamics but after visiting, he told me there was no way he worked his whole life earning a PhD to end up living in a bad area like that and like me, couldn't justify the commute from Hampshire County. A couple other major positives to Pittsfield that gives me hope good will prevail & triumph the terrible policies, the community college is AWESOME, I consider them the best and I've taken courses at most of them at some point and when I was younger, they are CARING AND SUPPORTIVE AND PHENOMENAL in how they treat you, at least the program I explored did, and the lakes such as Onata(?) are gorgeous, royal blue and absolutely Beautiful!!! 💙🌊💙 Despite the pollution, I agree with many people who've said after GE collapse, that city had other opportunities and could have taken other routes and made wiser decisions to prevent total destruction but I blame corrupt authorities, their agendas, politics, lack of promoting economic strength & stability, keeping drugs & bad elements out so people aren't depressed but feel motivated to pursue higher education & want to contribute to the community, to each other. I think certain segments aren't bright when it comes to tackling low quality clientele moving in and economy, two fundimental arena's to a more healthy & successful populous. I see lack of qualified folks in charge, in over their heads. But I'm simply a scientist, what do I know 🤷🏼‍♀️

The solar power field by Silver Lake does not serve the residents like it was touted to do by Mayor Ruberto. Instead it serves to give Eversource the electric company a lot of electric credits and last I know they are not even paying taxes on that property. It was supposed to help lower the bills of a lot of the residents in the surrounding neighborhoods in Morningside but that never happened. Wonder what kind of kickback Mayor Ruberto got for getting that placed there?
