We're all wondering where did we hear this song before. But actually we should be asking where did we feel these feelings before. Feelings makes everything familiar. This song describe a strange feeling in each of us, it makes us miss something or someone we don't even know what it is or who it is.

This theme feels so familiar and nostalgic, yet I've never heard of it before. It's like a lost memory that you've suddenly remembered, it's quiet and subtle. Or the time when you go to a place that feels like you've spent your time there, yet it's your first time visiting that place. This music gives an ominous sense of dejá vu and I like it.
This sounds like one of those "I did it but at what cost?" moments in anime. I would probably cry if the scene was very heartbreaking because of this music
For those who are wondering why it sounds familiar It's because of the chord progression which is pretty common among japanese composers For instance sayonara no natsu by joe hisaishi, kiki's dilevery service's main theme, or alan and cerl ost from breath of fire Search those up and you'll notice Also this chord progression is used extensively by hisaishi in many ghibli movies

It sounds like the first three measures of the main theme are a riff on Carrying You; they repeat at climactic moments, so it's easy to hear the similarity. Kamado Tanjirou no Uta sounds even more similar to Carrying You than this song does, and the composer is considerably younger (born 1974). He would have been about 12 when Laputa came out. The correct origin doesn't come from a Japanese composer but originally from a tango song "Por una Cabeza" made in 1935 by Carlos Gardel. Most of the general public today likely been exposed to the song from the tango scene in "Scent of a women" (1992) with Al pacino. It's very likely Joe Hisashi was influenced by this to create the Laputa theme in 1986, while the other Japanese composeres followed suit. Even Carlos "Por Una Cabeza" could have been inspired by previous songs before them but who knows.
highly doubt that he was influenced by that song, as well as other japanese composers. and how do you know that its "originally from a tango song"? its literally a song. there are similarities to other songs. lmao

NGL the amount of people who think this plays for some super emotional deep moment about love and hate is hilarious, since like 99% of the time in the show it's played for gag sad scenes like how much he dislikes a certain aspect of society and how it brings him despair like bus schedules or some shit or how maria's family is poor so they pull things from the dumpster like tvs or microwaves or dumpster babies.
The quote “I’m with you ‘til the end of the line.” came to my mind after I’ve heard this. Two friends are fighting and then right before one is about to finish the other, flashbacks from their childhood come in. It makes me kinda sad

Saw the thumbnail and instinctively knew this was from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and I was right!! Such an emotional piece that plays during such moments as, Itoshiki looking out to the sunset...and then a giant squid appearing and him going "...Mother?"
@rose tea For us who have watched Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, we cant see this theme as emotional lol. SZS is a parody anime and this song is played in parody moments. 😬😇

I feel like, this theme came directly from someone who is both hero and villain. He has fought for both sides but it's all the same; the blood, the hate and the evil. Tired and aged, loneliness becomes his battlefield and sleep, his safe haven. All he wants is stillness.
im pretty sure it is a bout someone going through a lot like an un dyeing pain or has a rough past but instead of someone doing good and evil it could be anyone good bad or in between.

Even Carlos "Por Una Cabeza" could have been inspired by previous songs before them but who knows.
highly doubt that he was influenced by that song, as well as other japanese composers. and how do you know that its "originally from a tango song"? its literally a song. there are similarities to other songs. lmao

I'd say probably 4-5 years if you're hardcore fan of this, then you'll find something new or get bored of it and eventually leave it alone, which will now only leave you with the knowledge of it's existence that you didn't have before.
