Hi, Having just watched your video and just having finished a week of boat maintenance, I got to admire your energy and determination. I am not sure I would take on such a large, and complex project, but then my FEELING 920 doesn't have a laminated deck. To cap it all. Sunshine and 41 c and beers at only $!.00. BTW I think it's a good idea to let us come with you on food shopping . Yea, David😏🌷
It’s a huge undertaking for sure - not sure we’re fully prepared for all it entails but we’re in it now for better or worse lolol!! Yes the $1 (usd) beers certainly help ease the pain on certain days !!! Thanks for the feedback on grocery shopping , I think it could be very interesting to show you the type of things you can get in a French gas station 😂
Hi again! Interesting to see the plywood under the genoa tracks! Replacing with finer glass should be a solid option. Beware that there is plywood also under the windlass. That’s also a spot that I think is quite likely to be exposed tho water, through bolt holes etc. keep up the good work, and take a break every once in awhile.
Thank you so much for watching ! Glad our content is interesting for ya !! Yes we have tested the deck on the bow and all seems to be in good order , we have also drilled out the deck vent in the v berth for replacement & core was solid all way round so we’re good there! Ahhhh it’s tough to take a break because we feel like we’re slacking but yes we need to more often on the beach with a beer to have some sort of balance , thank you for the reminder !
Thanks much !!!! Curaçao and the abcs for hurricane season do sound lovely for sure , we are thinkin about it … We have some friends there right now also that say it’s great !
@@sailingjoco We are in La Cruz Mexico after cruising the Sea of Cortez. We are rebuilding the Volvo Penta MD21B that is on our 252 #305 due to hydro-lock. I'll fell badass when it gets done,. Right now I just feel like I vaguely look like I know what I'm doing.
Thanks Terry! We hope so lol If we had more experience , things would move on way quicker but when every teeny weeny decision has to be researched and then researched 4 more times , it takes longer. But , gaining TONS of experience in the process
Nicely done ! We are lucky , our deck is super solid, no soft patches anywhere, even if the foam core has moisture in it, it’s hecka strong and won’t break down! 👌
My goodness so much interesting learning but sorry that this is happening! Love your never ending positivity and sending prayers all goes well from here on to get JOCO fixed! By the way how much is a beer there? 🙂
Thank you so much, this is a great encouraging comment lol! 💜 We have found $1 (USD) cans of beer here 👌 a cold beer (or two let’s be honest) is exactly what we need at the end of days like these 😂🍻 how does that compare to where you are? Cheers!
You guys are doing great! Lots of good progress. Btw I had to replace the plywood cord under my headsail tracks and I never had a teak deck. I used foam core. Solid glass is a lot of glass, it’s heavy and expensive, form core was easy. I got quarter inch sheets and stacked them with thickened epoxy in between.
It’s a huge job !!! Good on ya for tackling that one. How long did it take you? Did you have experience previous? We are happy with our choice to lay the track in glass - well NEVER have to think about it again lol !
@ zippo experience. Each side took a couple of weeks but I had a full time job at the time. Kiwi grip covered up a lot of beginner mistakes. I also reused all the fiberglass skins but there was a lot of thicken epoxy.
Yes we are also hoping kiwi will help with any faring issues we come across, although we are being super meticulous and looking at it at night / 4am with a flashlight to spot any defects and fix em ! Hard with the weather not on our side in the tropics but I guess to be expected
I've been having nightmares of that plywood strip underneath the tracks, and this doesn't help. I had to remove one of those scuppers as well for re-sealing. 2/3 screws broke and I ended up destroying the deck rather than cutting the toerail. Now looking back, I should have cut the toe rail similarly. It looks good enough with the cutout, and it can be fixed by gluing new piece of teak on top of the cutout.
Sorry to give you bad dreams haha !! It’s not that bad don’t worry. Everything can be fixed ! Yes we think the cut into the toerail looks just fine! Especially now that the fresh cut wood has had time to ‘grey’ , it blends in like it’s always been there.
We’ll assess each area as it comes , and to of course follow the rule ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’ . There’s plenty of time for more things to break and fix it then Hahhaha
@@sailingjoco do not fix 'not broke' stuff.... but if you cut out all that rot, and then have all the materials there to fix it, fixing 6" is ALMOST the same as fixing 6' of deck. You got this!
Sorry , this is 100% forseen , never and I mean never buy an old boat with a teak screwed down deck even if it does have a foam core . Its like Niagara Falls the way water enters the core. Thanks for sharing . IMO, HRs are over rated, were the deck drains are it should be solid laminate .
Yup unfortunately (forseen. We even wrote that in the description of the vid!) Not every old boat is the same tho👌 we’re just going the extra mile to open er up and show you how it is! There’s horror stories on New “plastic” ones too - it’s just boatlife ! Niagara Falls into the core? Mmmm not over here lol🤪
@@sailingjoco Yeah Im in the middle of the same job on a friends boat, an old Perry boat. Fantastic boat but more of the same teak deck problem . Pay a yard to do this on his 50 foot boat and you are looking at almost 100 grand !!
Someone once said that boat restoration is building a boat while another older boat is in the way. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Haha ! This is sooo true thanks for sharing!

Thanks much !!!!

that looks like such a hard job. best wishes to you guys. Andy is great!
It’s pretty intense yup !!!! One day at a time .. lol. Thanks for your comments as always !
What a job! It makes me feel a tiny bit better about pulling the diesel in our 352 to rebuild ourselves in the water.
Whoa you’re badass !
Where are you floating?
Replacing the engine to what ?

Will feel so good once it turns over the first time.
At least you’re saving $$ on yard fees, that’s a plus!
That was a big job indeed, I can't wait to see how you completed the work. Cheers, Richard
Spoiler : still ongoing !
Lots of mini projects dotted in between of course :)

Thank you , yup it’s gonna be a journey … and I hate that word but in this instance it’s kinda true lol

Thanks Linds! It’s daunting but we can do it 💪👌
Amazing you guys!
Thanks Peter !! It’s a labour of love for sure
First thing I did with my 1979 boat was remove the teak deck. Thankfully it was not screwed down.
That’s awesome ! Did you find any major surprises ? (Or look for them lol)
@ - only had one soft patch aft. It was an easy fix
