    The one market that truly embraced Van der Graaf was Italy. Pawn Hearts spent 17 weeks at #1 there, and the band were mobbed at the airport like the Beatles. Their shows on the 72 tour were so packed that riots would break out, to the point that the Italian cops finally arranged to have the band's gear stolen so they'd leave. Ultimately, that was why the band broke up from 72-75. David Jackson has been based there for the last few decades (now that it's calmer), often appearing with the band Osanna. The rest of the world seems bemused by them, save the hardcore prog maniacs like me and a lot of folks here. I guess they never made it easy...

    This song is probably the biggest reason why Peter Hammill is my favorite singer, the emotional devotion and deep lyrics make him truly special

  • @TheFloydios

    awesome reaction. This track is like many VDGG songs, an emotional roller coaster. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the difference between VDGG and other prog bands, Peter Hammill really took a deep dive into the human soul whereas other prog bands were more fantasy inspired. There's nothing wrong with being fantasy inspired (Nursery Cryme ect), but it makes it a lot more passionate when the lyrics deal with the human condition, especially when you're vocals are as intense as Hammill. Lost is my favourite track on the album, but Killer and House with no door are close. The next track pioneers over c, might take a while to get into, its really spacey and all over the place, but with time I've come to love it

    Another great reaction Justin. I love Van der graaf generator’s music because it’s just so weird, they should have their own music catagory called “Uneasy Listening” :) If a Kylie/Bieber/Swift fan listened to more than five minutes from one of their albums I fear that their head would explode! :) Cheers - Andy.

    (The Dance in Sand and Sea)
    So here we are, or rather, here am I, quite alone;
    I'm seeing things that were shared before, long ago;
    my memory stretches and I am dazed.
    You know I know
    how good the time was and how I laughed.
    Times have changed, now you're far away, I can't complain -
    I had all my chances but they slipped right through my hands
    like so much sand;
    I know I'll never dance like I used to.
    I'll just wait till day breaks upon the land and the sea,
    hoping that I can catch all of the memories;
    then I must crawl off upon my way,
    all of me listening hard for the final words.
    But there are none, the sunrise calls, I've lingered on
    too close for comfort and I don't know quite why
    I feel like crying -
    I know we'll never dance like we used to.
    I look up, I'm almost blinded
    by the warmth of what's inside me
    and the taste that's in my soul,
    but I'm dead inside as I stand alone.
    (The Dance in Frost)
    I wore my moods like different sets of clothes
    but the right one was never around
    and as you left I heard my body ring
    and my mind began to howl.
    It was far to late to contemplate the meaning of it all;
    You know that I need you, but somehow
    I don't think you see my love at all.
    At some point I lost you, I don't know quite how that was.
    The wonderland lay in a coat of white, chilling frost;
    I looked around and I found I was truly lost...
    without your hand in mine I am dead.
    Reality is unreal and games I've tried just aren't the same:
    without your smile there's nowhere to hide
    and deep inside
    I know I've never cried as I'm about to ...
    If I could just frame the words
    that would make your fire burn
    all this water now around me could be the love
    that should surround me.
    Looking out through the tears that blind me
    my heart bleeds that you may find me
    or at least that I can
    forget and be numb,
    but I can't stop, the words still come:
    I love you.

    One of my favorite VDGG tracks! Heavy, crazy, sad... emotional as always. The whole concept of this is album "loneliness". Every song is a story or a metaphor about being lonely.

    This is probably my favorite so far. Yes, it hits home, but we all want what we can’t have. I was baited to view a clear cased mouse trap video before watching/listening today’s reaction. I’d be interesting to know what video was watched before the day’s Justin fix.
    Anyway, afterwards, it seems these two videos go together very well for me.
    In the search for love, for the best possible love often leads to loss of the love that was “the” one. Tempted by the greener grass only to be caught in the foolish trap of loneliness.
    Oh yeah, great song. I was Sarah Coopering at the end ... I love yoooo.
    Now I know what it feels like after a great therapy session. Thank you VDGG... I feel lighter.

    To me, this song is the lament of a tormented and wounded soul. Like I've heard as an usual saying, and I think it is very suitable here, Peter Hammill reveals here his soul to us completely, sincerely, without any hesitation or caution measures. That is why this song is wonderful and painful to listen, at the same time. The listener who only wants to be entertained by music, or even moved by a sad song (by an usual one, let's say, even very good), would not like this emotional torrent of feelings upon him/her, at such a high intensity, and would not like the song. He or she would be embarassed and would refuse such a deep emotional involving. You must accept to take over some of the pain expressed by the song, to like it, I think. It's difficult.
    In the 70's, I remember there were some listeners who mocked Peter by saying : "This guy records a new album every time a girl leaves him". Even this was somehow real, of course, they were cynical and heartless.

      While that may be true that it's known as that ( dark side of prog) . It's really just all about a view of existence above existence. Hammill is the most profound introspective writer in the history of prog. To me; as a VDGG head, since the 70's, their music and lyrics are sublime tapestry of all that makes us human. It takes so many hours to really get inside Hammill's head...But; it's sure not topically stated in his songs; it's their accumulated synergy.

    Loss is one of the common themes in Peter's lyrics, and sometimes it's there without being obvious; the line "West is Mike and Susie" in "Refugees" is a reference to two old friends of his he lost touch with.
    His solo album Over is all about loss, mainly his girlfriend (Alice?), but also he was writing this album at about the same time VDGG had one of their breakups and also after their equipment was stolen on their tour of Italy. The financial problems caused by this led to the VDGG song "The Liquidator".
    When he's not singing about loss some other common themes are happy relationships ("Sunshine" and "Vision" on Fool's mate), historical stories ("Emperor", "White Hammer", "The Lie"), and science based songs ("Pioneers over C", "Red Shift", "Interference Patterns") and many more especially if you include all the psychology themed songs; he studied Liberal Studies in Science at Manchester University.
    I was also going to include religion as a common theme, but then while writing this it struck me that these songs ("White Hammer" and "The Lie" again plus many more) could also be about loss. Specifically the beliefs he used to have back in the days when he was a Catholic choir boy.
    I haven't checked all of the above for accuracy, just wrote this from memory, so don't blame me if I've got something wrong.

    • @JustJP
      @JustJP  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If that's from memory, it sounds good to me!

    Nice one, JP. VDGG has such a sound of their own, such a way of playing all their own, although I have mixed feelings when it comes to their meandering and disjointed transitions. But, after all, I think the band just has to go the way of Peter's intense emotions and brooding thoughts, anxious and wandering as they are. Those are some heavy lyrics there--I hadn't looked at them before.
    Speaking of meandering, I also love to wander when I visit a new place--of course also within limitations so I don't get lost. I'm much more adventurous about it if I'm in the woods than if I'm in a city. I haven't had the chance to big cities often so I would easily get lost lol.
    I'm guessing you're doing Pioneers Over C next then! That, to me, is the one /really/ standout track on H to He.

    I know you already reacted to Scorched Earth. Now you're almost finished with this album. How did you decide on reacting to 'H to He'? Most would guess that you'd start off at their most famous albums (to the critics). You didn't start off at Pawn Hearts, Godbluff, or Still Life. Just wondering. Also - this album is always pronounced wrongly. Most say the title as --- the letter 'H' (which is correct) to He. But they say the word 'He' as in the opposite of the word 'she.' That would be incorrect. Also say the H and e letters individually - 'H' and then 'e' - So the album is called 'H to He' as in the periodic table (chemistry) of the elements Hydrogen to Helium. The album cover is referencing the chemical process that is referred to as 'Helium fusion.' Thanks for getting back to VdGG - but this is really where VdGG's career takes off and goes where no other prog band can. Why? Because Peter Hammill's lyrics keep getting better and better. If you ever get to 'Childlike Faith' which is still three albums away you'll experience a lyricist maybe not equalled with incredible music to match.

    Hello Justin, greetings from England !
    How would you like to begin a new musical journey ?
    I'd like to suggest that you review some tracks by the band Roxy Music and their principal, prolific songwriter, Bryan Ferry.
    It is hard to categorise their music but if pressed, maybe 'Art Rock' would be as good as any a description for their early work.
    Their music catalogue is huge and so, where to start ? Why not at the beginning, in 1972, with the release of their first album called, simply, 'Roxy Music'. This LP was released in June of that year to good reviews and became a major success, reaching No. 10 on the UK album chart in September 1972.
    If I were to suggest a track from the album, why not try 'Ladytron' ? It would be a start.
    Keep on doing the in-depth research and reviews.
    Regards,
    Cambrian

      Is this the first time you've ever listened to VdGG? BTW - VdGG was before GG and they're really not that similar. This bit of advice applies to many progressive artists - sometimes it just takes a few listens to sink in. I reacted the way you did in 1973 when I first heard 'Dark Side Of the Moon.' Needless to say it clicked with me after a while. When JP reacts to the song 'Man-erg' - give that one your attention. It presents their sound for new listeners in a more accessible manner. JP will next be reacting to the VdGG song 'Pioneers over c' - a truly great song but still too difficult for first time listeners. If you like GG, PF, Genesis, KC, Tull - then I assure you - you will like VdGG.

  • @JO-xm6lq

    There is a reason why VDGG are #835 on top band polls and Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Queen are consistently in the top 5. VDGG were not that good. They had a cult minority following, that's all. Other giants were ELP, YES, Genesis, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Guns N' Roses, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Who, the Beatles and maybe 800 more - but not VDGG.

Now I know those years were somehow wasted - VDGG is one of the best prog bands ever. Now my TOP3. In terms of emotions, vocals and compositions - maybe number one.
