Starship and Super Heavy Orbital Test Animation

  • With suborbital Starship tests seemingly complete with SN15's successful landing, all eyes are on the first orbital test flight of a full Starship-Super Heavy stack. This test, scheduled to take place only in a few month's time, will feature the world's tallest and most powerful rocket ever built taking flight for the first time. This animation shows the proposed flight plan of that first orbital test flight.
    NOTE: Some aspects of this animation are inaccurate or out of date. During the production many new pieces of information were revealed that weren't known at the time certain scenes were animated.

      If all the BN is used for, is to hall SN into orbit, that would be an increadable mass to hall up. I wonder if 4 to 6 falcons on a o-ring brass around the SN canister could do the same, or cost less, if to orbit deploy only.

      "accuracy", All the GSE Tanks are the same object, there are 2 different size GSE tanks but are set to the same overall height by adjusting the height of the concrete base, they are missing the GSEC's entirely (the covers that will be used to allow insulating the tanks), the other tanks that are believed to be Methane and Oxygen Chillers are flat out missing from the site, the Booster appears to be half covered in heatshield tiles which it won't have as it will do a boost back and entry burn like the Falcon 9. And frankly not sure where they are getting the idea of the base of Super Heavy getting wider like that.

      This video helps a bit to appreciate how the booster will have so much power that the blast from its thirty, plus or minus, Raptor engines will fly out and away from the OLT (orbital launch table) as it begins to lift off, likely knocking over the LOX and liquid methane tanks in the GSE tank farm and igniting the mixture, unless some blast diversion system is installed. Cape Canaveral launch pads have huge blast diversion structures, but SpaceX seems to think that the booster, with roughly twice the power of the Saturn 5, will not need any such blast diversion structures.

    Amazing work! I especially enjoyed the attention to detail in some sequences. Some of my favorites: the smoke/vortices effects viewed from above at 1:22, the multiple ground telescope views, the discrete logo on the engine bell of Starship in the "skirt" shots, the LOX tank view at 4:00 (wow! great idea), the shadow shot over illuminated land at 4:35 (very cinematic! and definitely worth developing further with higher-res and more realistic textures), the gradual lighting during re-entry at 6:06 which really emphasizes this incoming heat, and finally the shot at 7:08 "caught" by the telescope operator which is _fantastic_ and one of the best examples of your creativity really showing throughout this video.
    Things I found a bit confusing or have questions about, if I may make some constructive suggestions (please don't take these as criticism, I have nowhere near the skills required to produce this sort of animation, just trying to be helpful): at 4:25 there's a shot of Starship with what looks like 3 vacuum-optimized Raptor engine + 3 sea-level ones; is that the plan? I realize none of the vacuum nozzles have been tried on a Starship prototype yet so we've never seen those, but the configuration made me wonder if these plans have been released yet. All throughout, the ice on the vehicle: it's a great touch on the launchpad as it is being filled with cryogenic propellants but I think you can probably remove it after Max-Q, it's not going to stick with all the air friction and vibrations and it's not like the cryo tanks and touching the fuselage. I would assume that it'll be clear of ice pretty quickly. Finally I'd suggest also thinking about some other effects like the surface heating and the way it's rendered like at 6:40 (I get what you're going for but the tiger-stripe effect might be a bit too much), and the water splashes which are like a whole entire domain of specialization by themselves and can _always_ be made better (people publish new techniques almost every year at SIGGRAPH).
    Once again, incredible work and congrats on this beautiful video. I hope the suggestions are taken as they are meant to be, just friendly advice from a fan. I can't wait for the next one!

    • @CbassProductions
      @CbassProductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      -Yes, the current plan for Starship is 3 sea-level engines and 3 vacuum optimized engines.
      -Ice survives launch pretty readily, actually. Ice on the LOX tank of the Falcon 9 during reentry is what causes the solid line in the soot from the entry and landing burns. Some comes off, but not all.

    This is simply excellent, and I've only watched the first two minutes.
    Also, I have to say that its an honour being on the same Comments section as Marcus House!

    2:40 This gives me a weird feeling of humility, seeing a 80m tall flying silo in free fall between the clouds.

    I love how you keep the camera angle realistic in the first minutes and how you simulate the real life camera exposing behavior most of the time. I'm not talking about the lens flare, I'm talking about how bright the earth is and how backlight effect make the stars disappear.
