The guy who formed Nabisco, Adolphus Green, actually betrayed his business partners who he had helped create the company that would later become Nabisco by going behind the backs of the founders of American Biscuit Company to merge with William Moore’s company and put himself in control of the newly formed Nabisco.

Fun Fact: In Japan, Nabisco products were manufactured under license by Yamazaki Baking from 1970 until 2016, when Mondelez International terminated the joint venture and opted to have Nabisco products imported from China and Indonesia. A year later, Yamazaki introduced their version of Oreo called "Noir", which is produced at the former Oreo factory in Ibaraki Prefecture. In comparison to the current Oreo, Noir has a darker cocoa taste, which is much closer to the original Oreo recipe.

Dominance, can we really say that? With the exception of private equity companies that ends up owning 5% of every blue chip, I see them as LBO-obsessed just buying already dying companies and just squeezing them for their last worth. Big tech and banks are the ones dominating. They're just vultures ultimately.

Not too far from where I live in Pittsburgh, there's a small office and shopping complex called Bakery Square. It used to be a big Nabisco factory, which baked goods for the company into the late 1990s. Over 20 years later, it's sprung back to life, with Google as its largest tenant and dozens of small shops, firms, and restaurants taking up the rest. A metal placard near the Google offices describes the main building historically belonging to the National Biscuit Company.

Great video! It's currently the 100th year of the HARIBO company- the one with the gummy bears- and it'd be neat to see a video about them. I'm sure they're an interesting company! Thank you for producing such great content!

One thing i noticed after Oreo and Chips ahoy change from nabisco into Mondelez, their quality toned down A LOT at least in my country lol. Chips ahoy cookies now taste like overcook cookies that hard, nothing chewy like before also smaller. Oreo just getting tinier and tinier, even reduced from 15 pcs into 12...

I remember a games website I played on a LOT back in the late 90s or early 2000s called NabiscoWorld. Your typical flash games of the era (mini golf is the one that I can specifically remember), all stylized in a theme park type thing based on Nabisco's various snack brands. So yes, I was generally aware of how they are one of the mostly food-based megacorps.

When I was in elementary school in the early 90’s(Toluca Lake Elementary School), from kindergarten to 5th grade, my bestfriend was a nice, genuine kid named Justin(I wish I could remember his last name) & I remember that I went to his 7th bday pool party.
It was a Hawaiian Luau themed party on Camarillo St in NOHO818, i remember that ever cookie there at his party, toys, decorations everything was Nabisco.
I remember that I was told by my mom, that Justin’s mom had told my mom[my mom & Justin’s mom were really great friends, their friendship organically happened much like Justin & I’s friendship in kindergarten all the way up until 5th grade when we graduated & I never saw him again, he moved,Justin’s mom trusted me since kindergarten to update her on Justin’s progress in class] that Justin’s grandfather is NABiSCO.
I said ok, unfazed by the info my mom had just given me [I grew up in North Hollywood818 & I met & saw a lot of celebrities, so I wasn’t fazed by the info until after the fact.]
(I loved Nabisco products as a kid)
Then I proceeded to go swim, even though I couldn’t swim.
I was drowning in his pool & I remember his Uncle dove into the pool with his clothes on & rescued me, I remember he told me(after I gathered myself) “Dude you didn’t let your head go underwater, you kept kicking your feet to reach the top surface, I saw your legs(underwater) when I jumped in & DUDE! your going to be a GREAT swimmer one day(I took swimming lessons that next summer & I’ve been a good swimmer ever since the age of 8yrs old.)
Long story short, I never befriended Justin because of who he was related to, heck, he never told me until years later after I had already knew & I still was in WOW when he told me, Justin was a really good friend of mine & I pray all is well with him & his family

When did the term 'biscuit' stop being commonly used in the consumer markets in the USA? It is a key part of many of these earlier brands and companies, yet now is only used in most of the rest of the English speaking world.
I am aware it is used to mean dry cakes eaten with fatty breakfasts in the south, but that does not seem to be similar to any of the products discussed here.

    • @TheBrandonn
      @TheBrandonn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Alarming how large these conglomerates are allowed to be, swallowing up all the competition in their path. It seems dangerous and like too much power. Why is it legal? Competition is healthier for consumers.

Shredded Wheat, the big biscuit ones, they're overlooked. Now I buy the little bran ones, more fiber, but I buy the big ones once in awhile. We had Hydrox one time when I was a kid. I didn't get it, I didn't get the name, but they were the original. Now all the choices with the banana creme centers or cinnamon double stuff, I don't get that either. Well, I do, it all steers you toward the flagship product.

A little known fact is that RJR Nabisco bought a chain of bagel bakery and restaurants called Skolnik’s. They were based in Chicago but had a significant presence in Philadelphia. I used to work for them there. RJR Nabisco expanded them into Maryland, NJ, and Texas which at the time, hadn’t caught on to the bagel’s popularity. The result was the Texas location closing after a year and RJR selling off Skolnik’s.
