  • Hello everyone, today I'm making Hmong Steamed Cabbage Rolls. This is how I've made my steamed cabbage rolls for many years now with just a few new adjustments. I hope you try it out and comment below with any questions or concerns. Thank you!
Cabbage Roll with Peanut Butter Dipping Sauce
    Ingredients for the filling:
    • ½ lb ground pork
    • 4 oz (3 small bundles) of bean thread noodles (glass noodle)
    • 1 head cabbage
    • 1 small carrot (shredded)
    • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
    • ½ c onions/shallots
    • ½ c green onions (diced)
    • ¼ c cilantro stem (diced)
    • 1 tsp chicken bouillon
    • 1/8 tsp black pepper
    • 1 tbsp mirin or sugar
    • 1 tbsp fish sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1 tsp seasoning soy sauce
Ingredients for the peanut butter dipping sauce:
    • ½ cup sugar
    • ½ cup water
    • ½ c peanut butter (use organic/pure peanut butter no added ingredients)
    • 2 to 3 Thai bird’s eye chilies (finely minced)
    • 2 tbsp fish sauce
    • 2 tbsp lime juice
    • Cilantro leaves (chopped)
    Directions for the dipping sauce:
    • Start by making the dipping sauce first. Pour the sugar and water mixture into a small saucepan on medium heat to make a simple syrup.
    • Once the sugar has dissolved add in the peanut butter and continue to mix and until the sauce comes to a boil. Turn the heat off.
    • Add in the chilies, fish sauce and the lime juice. Taste and adjust for seasoning.
    • Set to the side to cool.
    • Right before serving, sprinkle the cilantro leaves and mix.
Directions for the filling and cabbage rolls:
    • Soak the glass noodle in hot water until it becomes pliable. Drain the noodles and cut to smaller strands. Set aside.
    • Diced the onions, green onions, the cilantro stems and garlic. Shred the carrots.
    • Put a pot of water on the stovetop and turn temperature to high. Core the cabbage and submerge the whole cabbage into the pot of water. While the water comes to a soft simmer, peel the leaves off one by one and place them in a platter to cool.
    • Slice off the thick pieces of the stem so the cabbage leaves can be more pliable. Spread a sheet of cabbage onto a flat surface. Spoon some fillings into the bottom center of the cabbage leaf, fold in the center going up, then fold the two corners in, then continue to roll gently but snuggly. Repeat until you’ve used up all the cabbage leaves or fillings.
    • Place some water into the bottom of a steamer, place the cabbage rolls on the steamer rack. Once the water has come to a boil, let the cabbage roll steam for 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer into a plate or platter. Repeat this process until all the cabbage rolls has been steamed.
    • Serve with the dipping sauce.
