wow all your videos are amazing, even some of the best potters i know have tiny geometrical flaws before trimming, but you work the clay like magic. looks virtually perfect right off the wet stage !!
Carlton Ball once cautioned against pounding the clay like this as he knew several potters who lost the feeling in their hands from practicing this technique.
when u say just started, do u mean just got a wheel and clay and all that? because i really want to start, would u mind telling me how much ur wheel was and if u got a kiln and if u didnt, how are u firing the peices?
Gotta love how he wipes his brow after shaping the clay with his fist. Almost like he's thinking, "oof, at least the hard part is done now". This guy is awesome.
@supersummersalts in china they spin the opposite way from what we use in the states. most china-made wheels have an option to switch the direction of the spin. in response to your second question, if you look closely he isn't using much water, which is probably the reason there isnt much splatter, and he's very clean with his hands (cleans clay off after each period of touch on the piece)
I've ALWAYS wanted to make pottery but..... I don't enough patience because I'm always so excited to see what it'll turn out to be then when I'm done with it I'll regret to EVER starting to make it = (
I have 2 questions. One is it just me or is the wheel going the opposite way then the ones in the states? Second, how did he do that without getting clay all over himself? I'm caked after just making a tea cup.
it was traditionally a piece of leather i think. a piece of wet folded paper towel works alright for a little while. a piece of rubber like from a bike tube works very well. i don't remember what they're called.
Not only is he good, notice that the wheel is going clockwise. Most wheels in America move counter-clockwise. So, the way he is throwing is backwards for the way most people are taught in the U.S.
It was complicated for me to put the clay onto the wheel right in the middle when i first tried it in my sophomore year. I luv pottery but the clay seems not to like me! :(
La dextérité de ce potier me fascine. Mais , je me pose ne question: il fait ça sans se salir?.. Sa girelle ne génère aucune éclaboussure, son pantalon reste impeccable!!!
Yes, I guess im young, and en route, studying to become an art teacher. You look at art practically. A way that helps others accumulate wealth but i'm more on the educational side. Art IS a depiction of the artist's personal expression. If the motive for the end product is the right one. Maybe you should change your mindset.
@elitemathlete If it were not for pottery, many of our ancestors would have died because they would not have had any place to store their water or food when traveling. Pottery was the starting point for ideas like the use of plastic and glass to make bottles and other commodities that help us live comfortably everyday.
@HanakoFujita well yea if you throw the clay from above your head lol i only have the clay 3 inches or so above the wheel when i slam it down... it works just the same for me
I'm looking at all the comments and none of them are asking the biggest question. How the hell is he cutting the pottery off? you clearly see he is not cutting it all the way. will someone please explain how he is able to cleanly cut it all the even though it looks like he is barely touching his art. I'm so confused. someone please explain.
If ou look closely you see he uses a wire. He spins the clay, embeds the wire halfway through, and because its spinning it cuts all the way round the base.
+josh rodenkirch He uses the wire and spins the wheel. He only cuts half way through it and as it spins it cuts the rest. The vase is also on a bat. A bat is a plate that sits on the actual wheel and you can lift the bat off with the vase on it. He cuts the bottom and removes the vase with the bat. Lets it dry over night and he can pick the vase up off of the bat no problem once it dries out some.
Personal expression doesn't put food on the table. Artists need to eat too. I have seen so many aspiring artists fail miserably on welfare and working deadbeat jobs, because they can't find patrons to fund their passion. I almost went down that path as well so I speak from realistic experience. Rich people don't buy art that depicts the artist's self expression, they buy art that depicts theirs and allows them to show it off. BTW good luck becoming an art teacher, when so many more are willing.
Art is definitely not bullshit. Without art, there will be nothing in this world. If you judge art as bullshit just because the potter did not center the clay or handmade pieces cannot be perfect, clearly you have forgotten that there are many other genres of art. And that means, you have no right to immediately rule out that art is rubbish since your knowledge of it is so little.
@elitemathlete Hypothetical situation: You leave the last bottle of water in the sun in the middle of the desert. The bottle is made of plastic. The plastic in the bottle heats up and releases carcinogenic substances into your last source of water for miles. Alternate hypothetical situation: You lave the last bottle of water in the sun in the middle of the desert. The bottle is made of ceramics and already glazed. The ceramics heat up and nothing happens to your last source of water for miles.
It's so mesmerizing to watch! he is one with the clay!
that was terrific, i've never seen anyone throw like that. so fluid not one wasted motion.
pottery making is so magical!!

wow all your videos are amazing, even some of the best potters i know have tiny geometrical flaws before trimming, but you work the clay like magic. looks virtually perfect right off the wet stage !!

I don't know how old I was but I tried doing this but bc it was spinning so fast my hands kept slipping off! they make it look so easy.

the vase was impressive, nice crafting skills.
How did he get if of without squashing it?
It looks so fragile to me.
No splash tray, no apron... No slop :) I'm impressed.
I need to learn this. seems peaceful
Awesome! you make it look easy

Gotta love how he wipes his brow after shaping the clay with his fist. Almost like he's thinking, "oof, at least the hard part is done now". This guy is awesome.

OMG He is sssooooo effin amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so gonna try and learn how to make a vase that big.
I'm curious- what type of clay do you use in these videos? I would love to work with some.
artisan extraordinaire !!

Yes, pretty much a shifter. It's to change the speed. If he's making something delicate, he'll slow the work down so it doesn't fly apart :)
I have 2 questions. One is it just me or is the wheel going the opposite way then the ones in the states? Second, how did he do that without getting clay all over himself? I'm caked after just making a tea cup.
wow long sleeves and nice pants with no splash pans. that's pretty G
Thanks
So smooth!
thats so satisfying
Jsl Gaming
Fantastic!
Marvelous!
I don't understand a word you're saying, but this is awesome!
it was traditionally a piece of leather i think. a piece of wet folded paper towel works alright for a little while. a piece of rubber like from a bike tube works very well. i don't remember what they're called.

So funny! Is a solid of revolution.
what kind of pottery wheel you're using?
We call "Rokuro"
its so magical ;^:
This potter is incredible. Anyone know who he is?
so how did he manage to keep so much height when pressing the sides out?
Not only is he good, notice that the wheel is going clockwise. Most wheels in America move counter-clockwise. So, the way he is throwing is backwards for the way most people are taught in the U.S.

Wow he has skill :D
how many pound of clay did you use
while it spins is his wetting his hands with water or oild?
+Johnathan Larin water, i guess
Water. If the clay being thrown is too dry it sticks and smooth chatters, which is when it begins to vibrate loudly in your hands.

@HanakoFujita well yea if you throw the clay from above your head lol i only have the clay 3 inches or so above the wheel when i slam it down... it works just the same for me
uve obviously been doing this longer then ive been walking this earth
I actually came here to prove that the earth isn't flat.
Oddly satisfying...
COOOOL
On the bowl wasnt it a bit dry
same!!!!!!!
Just like anything else in this world ... Practice and then you'll get better at it !l

@kodal93
If you never left the wheel you could do that.

Is that a hand shifter on his pedal? Someone enlighten this potter.
