SX SlowHand Strat Part 1 - Turning an Affordable Guitar into an Eric Clapton Strat.

- In part 1 of this short DIY build series I introduce the new SX SST57 Strat copy I took delivery of recently. A super-budget guitar that has one of the nicest-feeling necks I've ever known.
The goal is to take this as close to a real Eric Clapton signature Stratocaster as possible at a fraction of the cost of the real-deal Fender model.
I chose the SX as the donor guitar because of the neck and as luck would have it I found one online at a discounted price of less than $100 US!
The neck profile is quite chunky... Close to a 50's Strat neck as far as I can tell. This made it perfect to use as a budget Clapton Stratd, seeing most other affordable brand Strat copies have thinner and narrower necks, which are still nice, but not as close in feel to a 50's neck.

Nothing wrong with the SX guitars. I had a strat which was pretty good for the money, and I bought an SX P-Bass copy over 10 years ago, which is very good, and I still have it. You're right about the hardware, it is built to a budget, but it is completely useable as is. I work as a guitar tech, and I've had a few SX's come in, and they come up very well every time.
...and you definitely have to admire the fit and finish of the body and neck. Thanks for the comment.
I have an old black sx tele from the 90s, which has a proper tele headstock - they had to change it further down the line. It's a great build and, like your strat, the neck is absolutely superb - just the right amount of chunky. Pickups aren't that bad either
I had an SX Tele about 7 years ago. It was quite heavy compared to this one. Thanks for the comment.
Why not just buy a MIM Fender deluxe Powerhouse Strat? All you have to do is snip off the tone cap then it's exactly like the Clapton thing, including the dummy pup for the noise cancelling feature that works brilliantly. Genuine Fender parts including Tex Mex pups! You can pick up a used one for something like US$350. Without the dumb looking hook head.
This is more fun and creative. At least it is for me.
