Long Live Southbank: The Bigger Picture

- Update: Long Live Southbank have come a long way since this video was first published. Having secured the long term future of the Undercroft and we have gained planning permission to restore legendary parts of the space last skated in 2004. To make this restoration into a reality, you can donate at www.llsbdonate.com.
Long Live Southbank presents our educational campaign film The Bigger Picture showing the 40 year history of one of London's most unique cultural spots, the 9 month campaign to protect it, and the true story of its intended destruction by the Southbank Centre.
London's skateboard community and our supporters have campaigned every single day for the preservation of Southbank (Undercroft) since the Festival Wing plans were first revealed. The result was unprecedented public support - from all walks of life Something the Southbank Centre has failed to achieve.
Our support continues to grow daily.
This is not about denying the expansion of access to culture, this is about the questioning of the integrity of archaic hands that seek to stifle and silence culture.
We are the voice of young people who stand for the future of artistic and cultural expression in an ever-changing world, for everyone. Not on paper, but in practice.

I've never skated in my life but I'd never want to see this icon of South bank disappear. What can I do to help? Wish you all the best

Was up there last night, it's the perfect spot to watch people skate in the heart of London---it's part of the whole scenery.
oh and I 'd like to add, I forged lifelong friendships with incredible thinkers and doers down there. Still in contact since 1993/4 - People from all sorts of backgrounds I'd otherwise never have met, but for the love of skating SB.
LONG LIVE SOUTHBANK
I cant believe how much work it takes just to action the obvious and keep it the way it is, nothing bad can come from it
Zena Edwards knows what's up! Great movie. Will be sharing it. Keep fighting! LONG LIVE SOUTHBANK!!!
Incredible work. LLSB!
Whether you like skating or not, none of us should let this happen! This is important, if this goes through then it would seem no area is free from commercialising and making money from...we should all support this
keep the fight on ! strong supports from South S-pain ! big up
Never give up! I really hope your voices will be heard!
From one film maker to another this is amazing work. I regularly go to the National Theatre and always stop to watch the skateboarders and look at the art at the undercroft. I have signed the petition to save Southbank and will share this now with everyone I know so that they can do the same. Good luck and keep up the pressure.
This is really well made! I can't believe the plans! Keep going, long live southbank!
Just Yes .. LONG LIVE SOUTHBANK !
I was ther in the early nineties, every damn day. I witnessed the cutting off of half of our area.. realtime.. keep up the pressure guys. It's our future not the monetary system.
Support the cause, stand strong!
Great video, Southbank forever !
great video, long live south bank!
I haven't been there in years but hope to be able to in years to come
Awsome video, good luck with preserving SB
Great piece of work guys!
I used to hang out here all the time!
Damn. I used to skate there in the 90's, it's a piece of my own personal history....don't let it fade away :(
I still cannot get the ringing figure out of my head, to raise 17 million in 6 months.. unbelievable
Respect for fighting to keep sb but I only wish this could of happened 10 years ago before they took 3 quarters of the spot away . I used to love skating the bank to wall and small kicker banks, the 4 set of stairs were great to warm up on before hitting the seven and the road gap and the bank to bank with driveway, man this spot had so much, even the period when they put railings in front of the banks created a great gap to flat over then. Shame we didn't mobilise then like we have now and maybe the younger lot would have a spot 4 times the size it is now to save...LLSB
Please keep it where it is!!!
Amazing - LLSB
Anyone else watching in 2024? What’s it like now?!
I remember it back in the 80's - Yup, i'm old :(
I can remember watching Mark Gonzalez skate there and Meanwhile.......Good times.
Get To The CHOPPA!!!
I think that was the 90's - Now i feel even older :(
Who wouldn't want to save this historic place!!!!!
LONG
LIVE
SOUTHBANK!
Great vid. Good luck with the cause.
Great film guys!
Go off!
one day I am going to skate here! (hopefully before it is relocated)
Inspiring stuff guyz.
Would people understand if;
Wimbledon, St. Andrews Golf Course or Twickenham got knocked down and relocated. Yes. What's the difference?
Southbank is used by more people and more regularly and would disrupt more people's lives having it removed.
If they need to make money, why don't they put all those restaurants/coffee shops in the space they plan to build the new 'skatepark' in? It's surely cheaper to put a few container boxes there (like the ones at Boxpark in Shoreditch) than to excavate the whole are to build a skatepark and build new infrastructure in the undercroft.
that makes total sense to me!!! we need this kind of sensible thinking in government
It would be horrible to put an end to this treasure of a place.
Damn! I never thought the Southbank would need saving!
Long live The Southbank!
Long Live Southbank
Save the Southabank
LLSB
Make it so.
jude open your eyes !
good luck!
long live Southbank!
100% backed.
a worthy cause
the way the proposed new location is at a well known skate spot which they have already taken away
Live long south bank
whatever happens, London will still be good to skate
LLSB, WE WILL NOT BE MOVED
good video
Sadly no one makes any money out of the Undercroft skate park. Boris can't have that.
I think they killed off Southbank years ago (10yrs?) when they shut off most of the undercroft with those floor to ceiling high wooden hoardings. For sure, the part closest to the river with the 7 set remains but in my mind it lost its depth and mystery.
I used to skate there around 1999-2004.
Cathode Ray They just severed off a part but the heart and soul is still alive and strong
Humanity before profit !

Instead of destroying the Southbank skate spot, improve it! Make it bigger!
rich people: "we want art slaves" in rebuttle to the girl saying they're in the buisness of art, they arent into art
Since fucking shitty nike sb. Have got loads of money they should pay out the 17 million. Needed to keep south bank open
if I go there with my scooter will I die?
Yes
Hope it stays
It'd only take 17,000 peole to donate 100 quid and/or
I'm going to see my MP next week.If enough (couple 1000 should do it) others
do the same, it takes an email or phone call then 30 mins at his/her surgery
this may get re thought.
So strange seeing a place being abandoned by "normal" society for decades now suddenly being worth millions of £s.
This place belongs to the people responsible for making it "this place".
Who actually feels responsible for kicking them out and make profit of what these originators established?
Sad, sad world...
Why not tear down the coliseum and rebuild it somewhere else?
Skate or die...
skaters are cute
Come on folks of course im being sarcastic! Wheres yeah sense of humor gone? ;) SKATE TILL I DIE
Next Glastonbury will be being redeveloped for office space
get rid of southbank, put a plaza there.
