Used to spend summers on the Big Island (Pepeekeo) back in 70's. We would fly into Hilo onboard a United Airlines Super 60 Series DC-8 (in "Friend-Ship" livery) and leave onboard United 747-100 Series. Small airport but there was never any problem with the big jets.
@suitesandlobbies That's right, United Airlines switched over to the DC-10 for the San Francisco to Hilo route around 1976-'77. I liked the DC-10 but I missed the DC-8. The service on the DC-8's was top notch, before the advent of "flight attendants." Great food, in flight movies, plenty of snacks and soft drinks, blankets and pillows, headphones for music...even in economy class seats.
Something's off with your cover picture, the one shown before clicking on video. It's not the Hilo airport. Doesn't match up even if image is flipped. Light plane runway crossing obliquely is missing. No shoreline at right corner of runway.
@@suitesandlobbies Nope. Compare to the first overhead image that starts the actual video. The secondary runway is clearly visible on both sides of the west end of the main runway, but absent from the thumbnail. Also no Hilo Bay and Banyan Drive peninsula at right (north). Skyline is similarly sloped, though.
😊thanks I am on my way to getting there
Thanks! Will be visiting in a few days. Haven't been there in a couple years. Good to have refresher!
Enjoy your visit!
I love Hilo airport! Thank you for sharing.
Will be there in September and needed this info! Very clear and concise!

Sounds like some good memories. I remember flying the DC-8 and DC-10s back in the day.

Jet bridge! That great!
I always enjoy flying into Hilo International. The lobby seating is very Hilo.

This is indeed an ariel shot of the Hilo Airport, the light plane runway is just off frame to the right.

Did you enjoy your stay here in Hilo?
I did! Kens for breakfast, Hilo Farmers Market for some giant avocados, and Big Island Cookies for the family back on O'ahu.
Underutilized and a complete waist.
