I was always amazed at how bad Romulan security must be if a cloaked Klingon ship can just beam a human and android down and raise no alarm. At that rate, they could just beam photon torpedos down and vaporize the Romulan biosphere.

I've always wondered about stuff like this. Is it possible that the science of psychology continuously emerges across all possible species; that Romulan hubris gives way to a sort of "chink in the armor"? Would it be plausible that they think they're too good, too smart, and too ferocious for anybody to dare mess with them like that; so their pride wins out and they let their guard down where/when it's most needed? *shrugs*

Substitute Borg for Romulans. I never took the Borg as serious at the beginning. Humans just beamed on board the cubes and walked around, ignored by the drones. Again, use torpedoes rather than crewmen. If you saw "V" it was the same thing. Aliens have no security

[Picard is requesting a cloaked vessel from Chancellor Gowron through B'iJik, a junior adjutant]
B'iJik: How would it benefit the Klingon Empire? I'm sure Gowron will ask.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: The only benefit to the Klingon Empire would be our gratitude.
B'iJik: That is what you want me to tell him?
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Yes. And please add that, if he is unable to provide us with a ship, then I am sure there are others in the Klingon Empire who would be willing to help me. And then... *they* would have our gratitude.
One of my all time favourite TNG scenes. 😆

The talk between Data and Spock: "You've abandoned what I've sought all my life." To me, that's the best part of the episode, so perfect in how it captures the struggles of both of them.

When Picard talks about fathers and sons, Riker simply says: "I understand." A nice subtle nod to season 2's "The Icarus Factor". Brevity! (and actor Malachi Throne who played Commodore Mendez from TOS's "The Menagerie" appears as Pardek. Subtle fan service!)

Remember, also, that Malachi Throne was brought back for "The Menagerie" because he was the original voice actor for The Keeper in "The Cage."

Which is probably why we never saw Sela again. The Romulan Fleet Command decided to humor her by green-lighting her invasion plan. When it blew up in her face, they either executed her or demoted her and dumped her on some distant outpost so they wouldn't be implicated. That's my theory anyway. 🖖😎👍

One of the reasons I like Unification two-parter is that it shows how people can have very different careers over a lifetime. One of my history professors was an attorney for many years and then decided he wanted to do something different. But because of his former expertise, I learned to look at history through legal glasses.
Another lady is a great example. I knew her as a stay at home mom, but she had also been a car saleswoman and then police officer. When she had her mid-life crisis and felt ugly, she became a stripper for confidence.
You never know what someone's other job was. :)

I think it's a good thing that Nimoy decided to embrace his status and his iconic Star Trek status for TNG. He could have called it in, but the interplay between Spock and Data was a nod to the similarities of the characters, and the interaction between Picard and Spock is priceless. Picard challenged Spock in a way that is often underutilized in TOS and their movies - don't appeal to Spock from an emotional argument but rather with an intellectual one. Picard challenged Spock to support and justify his basic assumptions about the Romulans, and to guide him in his actions towards rectifying his beliefs that he could do it again like he did with the Klingon Empire.

I remember this watching the original run.
While I would not rate it as one of the best episodes, the stakes were high, and it felt profound. It still is a very good two-parter!
And not only we get SPOCK, we get SELA. And SAREK.
Mark Lenard alone is enough reason to watch. Having him and Patrick Stewart share a scene one more time! And how Picard reacted when he got the news ... this episode harkens back to Journey to Babel.

After part 2, they showed a preview for the Undiscovered Country where the shapeshifter imitating Kirk is vaporized so I thought that scene along with Spock saying he was responsible for what happened to Kirk which is why he did this alone, meant Kirk was going to die in the Undiscovered country.

    • @rickjohnston2667
      @rickjohnston2667 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, I remember that. I thought the same thing. It made me think Spock went to attempt Vulcan Romulan unification out of guilt, feeling responsibility for Kirk's demise, and didn't want to endanger others in his quest.

  • @myrabeth77

Spock and Picard's discussion of "cowboy diplomacy" is the PERFECT level of fan service. It's a reasonable topic under the circumstances. It uses the established history in a conversational way. It's brought up in a way that's tonally very in line with the age/ career experience gap between the two characters. So the implied wink toward the audience doesn't detract from the story or even the scene. It's naturally integrated and fully in character. The writers knew Kirk had to be mentioned to keep the fans happy, and they clearly put some effort into doing it well.

Great commentary! Loved it for one of my favorite TNG episodes. There is a passing reference to ST6 in Unification II though, a sort of an Easter egg: Spock does tell Picard when they first meet that he had a role in the signing of the Khitomer Accords and he hints that he had to force Kirk's hand to do so. But that's it. If I recall correctly, the episode was indeed thought of a sort of promo for the movie to be released a couple of weeks before the movie itself, but the great thing is that the two parter was so good that it was an independent story regardless of ST6!

See, I've never thought Pardek turned them in. He seems genuinely surprised when Sela shows up, and genuinely hurt when Spock says that it was him who did it. I've always thought Spock only said that so that his friend wouldn't get in trouble. I feel that Pardek's sad goodbye to Spock, and Sela basically saying "Fine, whatever!" when Spock insists that Pardek turned them in and "thanks" him for his service.

I'm grateful for the points you made regarding nostalgia, particularly that this episode tells a story that looks _forward_ and not back. I think that's key to what separates this from having easter eggs machine gunned at you in certain new shows. For one the fan service back then was often a lot more restrained. Of TNG's 178 episodes, TOS characters showed up in 5 of them, or fewer than 3% of episodes.

  • @michaelreindel6975

At what point in *Trek* was it decided that *all* Vulcans and Romulans had to have Spock’s haircut? That wasn’t the case in TOS… or even in the earlier TOS movies…
And *Unification* was mostly remarkable because most of that TOS cast was, for many years prior, *vocally* weary of TNG (something that seems to have been looooong forgotten…)

The Romulan wigs bothered me so much that I wrote a scene which suggested that they were part of the uniform dress code:
      Tomalak: "Something bothering you, cousin?"
Tebok: "I can't stand this blasted wig!"
Tomalak: "You'll be out of uniform without it..."
      Tebok: "I'm off duty."
      Tomalak: "Well, then..."
Tebok pulls the wig off and throws it contemptuously to the floor. Tomalak draws his sidearm and disintegrates it.
Tomalak: "It will never bother you again."

These episodes also have one other guest star ; Malachi Thorne as Pardek. He was in TOS twice, as the original voice of the Talosians in some cuts of the Cage (not sure of further involvement),and as Commidore Mendez in the 2part re~telling the Menagerie. His best known role however, was in the 1970’s series It Takes A Thief as Robert Waggoner’s boss.
The other great thing about Unification is that it set up Spo
ks presence on Romulus for the 2009 Star Trek film that gave us the Kelvin timeline. And according to Discovery Vulcan/Romulan reunification did happen at some time in the future, albeit with mixed results. Another mark of good storytelling, when the writers can build upon what has come before.
And didja” notice who happened to play the Klingon transport Captain? The one that needled our heroes so much? Steven Root! Yeah, that Steven Root.
    Aaaaaahhh crazy business!

I don't generally read Trek noels anymore but always wondered if some of the plot stuff was ironed out a little better on the page. • @Commanderziff

There are three things I love about this episode:
1: Data and Spock's conversation, I really wish we'd gotten more screen time with the two of them together
2: The fact that Spock is probably one the most recognizable people in the quadrant, and yet made absolutely no attempt to disguise himself. Romulans and Vulcans may be basically the same species, but Romulans have developed that very prominent 'V' ridge on their forehead, but Spock refused to change his obscenely famous face in any way.
3: The idea that a few thousand troops can conquer an entire planet, and somehow hold onto it, completely cut off from any support, smack in the middle of Federation space.
Addition: Also the fact that the trojan Vulcan ships are heading towards Vulcan at Warp ONE, meaning it will take them about a hundred years to get there.

Season 5 of TNG that I think should be a genuine case study of Trek at its finest and at its least gimmicky. There are very few callback stories outside of "Silicon Avatar". Indeed, Episodes like "I, Borg" (which is not an action episode and indeed turns the idea of the Borg on its head) or "The First Duty" (which features the first time ever seeing Starfleet Academy, but it's not fun and instead a stark, stomach-churning drama). It's so non-gimmicky that Q does not appear in it because the writers couldn't think of a worthy story for him and didn't want to do a half-assed Q episode. Indeed, "Unification" is the only "gimmick episode" that still doesn't feel like it is. Alex Kurtzman and company should study and pore over every aspect of this season of Trek.

The plot problems are really astonishing as they would have been easy to fix. Sela's plan could have been a sabotage or infiltration mission that makes use of the specific circumstances, preparing a war rather than starting it outright. And instead of telling them her plan and then leaving the room, the protagonists could have escaped, figured it out and foiled it, thus giving them more agency.

I always wanted more from this concept. If anything, _Star Trek Nemesis_ should have utilised Spock's movement in some way. Maybe all the soldiers returning from the Dominion War had a newfound respect for the Federation & even the Klingons, and began to push for moderation. Remans enthusiastically supported the war, hoping it would get them some form of independence _a la_ India with the British Empire in World War 1. So when independence is refused, Spock's movement starts to become a magnet for all these disaffected groups, and he starts to progressively lose control of it.

Rewatching this episode last night, I was struck by the parallels between Sarek’s sad demise and Tuvok’s in the last episode of Voyager. That timeline (as I recall) was nullified, but it’s sad to see Vulcans succumbing to such emotional and physical pain at the end of their days.

I never liked the way this episode treats Vulcan almost like a separate faction to the Federation. Not just the whole concept of unification being between Vulcan and Romulus, not The Federation and the Star Empire.. but even little things like the "Vulcan ship". Isn't a Vulcan ship just... A Starfleet ship?

    • @navibc31
      @navibc31 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think the Federation isn't as loose as the United Nations, but not as tight a connection of governments as the United States so there could be officials and ships from both the Federation and the individual "nations" like the Vulcans

      @Willpower-74205 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Starfleet is merely the exploratory and defensive arm of the Federation. The individual member worlds still have their own home-built civilian vessels for trading, cargo-running, and non-Starfleet scientific expeditions, though. There are even examples of Starfleet selling some of their older ships to exclusively civilian interests for these purposes. The S.S. Vico from "Hero Worship" is one. 🖖😎👍

@@navibc31 I've always thought of it as operating more closely to the EU, where each nation's military and government is still separate but they also engage in the supranational parliament/capitol coordinations (and Starfleet would be like the proposed EU-wide army contributed-to from all members)

Back when I first started watching season one of ST Picard, it very briefly seemed as though the writers were attempting to provide details of all the different stuff the retired Admiral Picard had been getting up to (besides overseeing his vineyard in France) since the end of Nemesis. Personally, I thought it might've been interesting if the whole effort he was involved in to help rescue/re-locate Romulan citizens had been framed as his own small way of trying to carry on Ambassador Spock's legacy. Alas, things eventually ended up going in a whole different direction.

I noticed that there was a teasing reference to the then-unreleased Star Trek VI film in the dialogue between Spock and Picard; Spock makes a passing reference to the diplomatic elements of that movie after Picard criticizes him for carrying out "cowboy diplomacy."

Spock compared Kirk to Nixon, when Spock said "only Nixon can go to China." Another Nixon reference was that Kirk recorded the fact that they're drinking Romulan Ale on a Starship.
If Kirk, was supposed to represent Nixon, then would Spock be a similar reference as Kissenger.

I think it's okay for the main characters to not be the heroes of the story sometimes. In many ways, this plays out more as a mystery they need to uncover, which is just as fun. And, yes, it's really okay Sela's plot isn't really well thought out.

Honestly the only problem I had with that episode is the Lack of Data/Spock interaction. One who has achieved absolute logic but yearns to be human and one who has spent his entire life trying to escape his humanity and achieve absolute logic. There should have been more to their interaction.

Agree with you, Steve. This episode isn't one of the best, but it is very good. One of the niggles for me is the end, where Picard and Spock mind-meld, and it's kinda really glossed over as the credits start as soon as they start. This deserved a bigger, longer moment as it's a significant time in Spock's life and I would have liked to have seen them acting together in such a close, intimate way that a mind-meld is.
The scene-chewing, once again, with Mark Leonard and Patrick Stewart in part 1 is fabulous.

I, too, always thought that Sela’s plan for Vulcan conquest was ridiculous. At most a couple of thousand troops were going to take over a planet of billions. And then, Star Fleet would just stand by and not starve the enemy out or kill them outright. A few thousand ground troops taking over a multi planet power is just silly.

  • @steveng.clinard1766

Unification part 1 indeed had the best soup-eating subplot in all of Trek. Do you think the writers were making a (not-so-subtle) callback to the Spock/Chapel (colloquially "Spopal") plomeek soup subplot fom TOS "Amok Time"? Seems pretty obvious to me.

When u was young I remember being very meh when the episodes aired.... years later I learned to love them. The simple fact of the heros pretty much stuck in a web felt very real and how life goes some time.
Another reflection I think the occupation of Vulcan would likely be aided by closed warbirds...warlords.... I think the occupation would have been an attempt to knock out a pillar of the federation without people knowing it was an invasion. Like if Vulcan went black and suddenly withdrew from the federation and joined romulus..... but if not it's just silly

Solid 2 parter, the second is not as strong as the first imo, although the stuff with Data and Spock is pretty good
Sela kinda pulls it down, she's a bit of a bumbling bond villain but it was interesting how she is a kind of a dark mirror to Spock in a certain way I felt they could've focus on that more on those character beats
I'm annoyed they never followed up on this more directly, it's a great conceit that worked with UDC and I felt could've worked if they saw it through on screen
To me either Nemesis or Season 1 of Picard should've dealt with this, we only get some lore building follow up as backdrop in Discovery season 3 with Unification iii which was a servicable episode for me but still I wanted to actually see it setup with the Enterprise E crew.
